maṣdar خُلُودٌ and خُلْدٌ — though the latter is not called a maṣdar in the first or the last of these lexicons, and is perhaps a simple noun.

Synonym of أَقَامَ; or of أَطَالَ الإِقَامَةَ, of remaining a long time.

Also اخلد and خلّد in the same sense.

And: he remained, or continued, without break, always, endlessly, or for ever; synonym of بَقِىَ and دَامَ, or دَامَ بَقَاؤُهُ and فِى دَارٍ, in a house or an abode, not going out of it.

In the Qur'ān 104:3, meaning that he will not die: that is, he acts as one who thinks that, with his wealth, he will not die.

وَلَوْ شِئْنَا لَرَفَعْنَـٰهُ بِهَا وَلَـٰكِنَّهُۥٓ أَخْلَدَ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُ ۚ فَمَثَلُهُۥ كَمَثَلِ ٱلْكَلْبِ إِن تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْهِ يَلْهَثْ أَوْ تَتْرُكْهُ يَلْهَث ۚ ذَّٰلِكَ مَثَلُ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا ۚ فَٱقْصُصِ ٱلْقَصَصَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

If it had been Our will, We should have elevated him with Our signs; but he inclined to the earth, and followed his own vain desires. His similitude is that of a dog: if you attack him, he lolls out his tongue, or if you leave him alone, he (still) lolls out his tongue. That is the similitude of those who reject Our signs; So relate the story; perchance they may reflect.

104:3
يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُۥٓ أَخْلَدَهُۥ

A maṣdar of خَلَدَ [or a simple noun], with the same meaning as [the maṣdar] خُلُودٌ.

As also خَلَدَةٌ, plural خِلَدَةٌ, which also means ornaments for the person, collectively; and so does خُلْدَةٌ [if this is not a miscopying of خِلَدَةٌ].

[The mole;] the blind rat; as also خَلْدٌ and جُلْذٌ [q. v.], in the article جلذ.

Or a species of rat; as also خِلْدٌ; or one of the names of the فَأْر [or rat]; or a species of the [kind of rats called] جِرْذَان, blind by nature, having no eyes, living in the deserts.

Lth says the singular is خِلْدٌ and the plural خِلْدَانٌ. In the T the singular is said to be خِلْدَةٌ and the plural خِلْدَانٌ, which is very strange.

Or a blind animal [that lives] under the ground, having no eyes, that likes the smell of onions and leeks; so that if either of these is put over its hole, it comes out and is caught.

If its upper lip is hung upon a person suffering from a quartan fever, it cures him; and its brain, moistened with oil of roses and used as an ointment, dispels the maladies called البَرَص, البَهَق, القَوَابِى, الجَرَب, الكَلَف and الخَنَازِير, and every eruption on the body.

مَنَاجِذُ — or, as in some copies of the K, مَنَاجِدُ, with the unpointed د — is used as its plural, as مَخَاضٌ is used as the plural of خَلِفَةٌ.

وَمَا جَعَلْنَا لِبَشَرٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ ٱلْخُلْدَ ۖ أَفَإِي۟ن مِّتَّ فَهُمُ ٱلْخَـٰلِدُونَ

We granted not to any man before thee permanent life (here): if then thou shouldst die, would they live permanently?

25:15
قُلْ أَذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ أَمْ جَنَّةُ ٱلْخُلْدِ ٱلَّتِى وُعِدَ ٱلْمُتَّقُونَ ۚ كَانَتْ لَهُمْ جَزَآءً وَمَصِيرًا

Say: "Is that best, or the eternal garden, promised to the righteous? for them, that is a reward as well as a goal (of attainment).

41:28
ذَٰلِكَ جَزَآءُ أَعْدَآءِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلنَّارُ ۖ لَهُمْ فِيهَا دَارُ ٱلْخُلْدِ ۖ جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا يَجْحَدُونَ

Such is the requital of the enemies of Allah,- the Fire: therein will be for them the Eternal Home: a (fit) requital, for that they were wont to reject Our Signs.

These stones are called الأَثَافِى.

So called because they remain a long time after the standing remains of a house have been effaced.

A man who is not grey when advanced in age; whose hair of head and beard stays black in old age.
