Form 1خَفِىَ4 senses · 3 main
muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُيَخْفَىيَخْفِيهِيَخْفِىmaṣdarخَفَآءٌ خُفْيَةٌ خَفْىٌ

Core sense — it was hidden, or unapparent; it appeared; he hid himselfgenerated

1.1figurative · مجاز — inferredit (a thing, or an affair) was unperceived by him; it was not apparent to him, or was hidden from himخَفِى عَلَيْهِ

.

The verb has two opposite meanings. First: it was unperceived or imperceptible — hardly perceived by any of the senses, or only by the eye or ear, or by the mind; mostly unapparent, latent, obscure, hidden, concealed, covered, or unconspicuous; also faint or dim to the sight; suppressed or stifled, said of the voice; low, faint, gentle, or soft to the ear; obscure to the mind, abstruse, recondite, occult, or covert; and secret, private, or clandestine. Second, the opposite: it appeared, it became apparent, open, manifest, plain, or evident, as also استخفى.

it appeared to him; it became perceptible, apparent, or open to himخَفِىَ لَهُ
It appeared [to them that they should go away with them, or take them away, and conceal them from the believers in a plurality of gods]فَخَفِى لَهُمْ أَنْ يَذْهَبُوا بِهَا وَيَكْتُمُوهَا أَهْلَ الشِّرْكِ
[It appeared to them that they should take them forth to the territory of El-Islám]خَفِىَ لَهُمْ أَنْ يُخْرِجُوهَا إِلَى دَارِ الإِسْلَامِ
the affair, or case, became manifestبَرِحَ الخَفَآءُ

According to some, the particle that connects the verb with its subject distinguishes one meaning from the other.

These are sayings of Mohammad, apparently the Hanafee Imám, about spoils.

But this is said only of what appears from a state of concealment, or from a hidden quarter.

Or: the state of concealment departed, or ceased; but the first explanation is better. Some say that الخَفَآءُ here means the secret, and that the sense is: the secret became apparent; or, literally, the low ground became high and apparent, meaning that what was concealed became revealed. [See also art. برح.]

covertly, secretly, privately, or stealthilyعَلَى خَفَآءٍ
1.1.1I made myself unapparent to him; I lurked, or lay in ambush, for him; I disguised myself to him; I hid myself from himخَفِيتُ لَهُ

maṣdar خُفْيَةٌ, خِفْيَةٌ, and خِفْوَةٌ, the ى and و being interchangeable.

Also expressed as اِخْتَفَيْتُ.

he hid, or concealed, himselfاختفى

مِنْهُ: from him. Also استخفى and اخفى; and تخفّى is synonymous with اختفى in this sense. (Fr, El-Fárábee)

I hid, or concealed, myself from youاِسْتَخْفَيْتُ مِنْكَ

But one does not say اِخْتَفَيْتُ. And اختفى in the sense of خَفِىَ is not of high authority, though it is not disallowed; استخفى is more usual.

[I did it covertly, secretly, privately, or stealthily]فَعَلْتُهُ خُفْيَةً

Also خِفْيَةً in the same sense.

[He was slain covertly, or secretly]قُتِلَ خفْيَةً

Also خِفْوَةً.

he steals itيَأْكُلُهُ خِفْوَةً
submissively, devoting yourselves to His serviceاُدْعُو رَبَّكُمْ تَضَرُّعًا وَخُفْيَةً

[Literally, he eats it covertly.]

In the Kur 7:53. Or, according to Zj, adhering to His service in your minds; or, according to Th, celebrating Him in your minds; or, according to Lh, in quietness and stillness; or secretly — and so in the similar passage in the Kur 6:63.

خُفْيَةٌ is from أَخْفَيْتُ الصَّوْتَ, explained below in this paragraph; its intransitive verb is اختفى, meaning it (the voice) was suppressed or stifled, or was low, faint, gentle, or soft — like خَفِىَ, which is more common.

Qur’ān 6:63 approximate — somewhere between 6:62 and 6:73 Lane cites “Kur vi. 63”
Qur’ān 6:63 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
قُلْ مَن يُنَجِّيكُم مِّن ظُلُمَـٰتِ ٱلْبَرِّ وَٱلْبَحْرِ تَدْعُونَهُۥ تَضَرُّعًا وَخُفْيَةً لَّئِنْ أَنجَىٰنَا مِنْ هَـٰذِهِۦ لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ

Say: "Who is it that delivereth you from the dark recesses of land and sea, when ye call upon Him in humility and silent terror: 'If He only delivers us from these (dangers), (we vow) we shall truly show our gratitude'?"Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

1.2he made it perceptible, apparent, open, manifest, plain, or evident; and, in the opposite sense, he hid, concealed, or covered itخَفَاهُ

maṣdar خَفْىٌ and خُفِىٌّ. In the sense of hiding it, wrongly written in the CK as خَفّاهُ.

Also اخفاهُ in these senses. According to some, this second verb has the sense of concealing while the first has only the sense of making apparent; according to others the reverse is the case; and according to Aboo-'Alee El-Kálee the first verb has only the sense of making apparent, while the second has both meanings.

The second verb is also explained as meaning: he removed its خِفَآء, that is, its covering; and the first as meaning: he made it come forth from a state of concealment, or he drew it forth — as also اختفاهُ.

the rain made the rats, or mice, come forth from their holesخَفَى المَطَرُ الفَأْرَ
[Truly the hour of the resurrection is coming:] I am almost making it appearإِنَّ السَّاعَةَ آتِيَةٌ أَكَادُ أَخْفِيهَا
I am almost removing what conceals it; or I almost conceal itأُخْفِيهَا

In the Kur 20:15, read in these two ways by different readers.

As Ubeí reads it, أَكَادُ أُخْفِيهَا مِنْ نَفِْسى [I almost conceal it from Myself]; and Fr says the meaning is: I almost conceal it from Myself, and how then should I acquaint you with it?

conceal your information from any who may ask you about usاخفى عَنَّا خَبَرَكَ

From a tradition about the flight from Mekkeh; written without the vowel-signs, so that it may be اِخْفِى or أَخْفِى.

he used to make his voice perceptible [or audible, with moaning]كَانَ يَخْفِى صَوْتَهُ بِأَنِينٍ

In another tradition, thus with fet-h to the ى.

I suppressed, or stifled, the voice; I made it low, faint, gentle, or softأَخْفَيْتُ الصَّوْتَ
he spoke in a low, faint, gentle, or soft toneاخفى الكَلَامَ
1.3

خَفَى, and خَفِىَ, maṣdar of each خَفْىٌ: said of lightning; see خَفَا in art. خفو.

So called because they conceal themselves from the eyes [of men]; as also الخَافِيَآءُ and اخَافِيَةُ, or this last means what conceals itself in the body, of the jinn. (Ibn-Menádhir)

The plural of the first is خَوَافٍ [and of the first also خَافُونَ, like قَاضُونَ, for] the bare piece of ground amid herbage is said, in a tradition, to be مُصَلَّى الخَافِينَ, that is, [the praying-place] of the jinn.

The first word also means mankind, so that it carries two opposite meanings.
