Form 1خَطَا1 sense

1.1I stepped one step—خَطَوْتُ خَطْوَةً وَاحِدَةً

Said of a man [and of a beast]: he stepped, paced, or walked.; maṣdars خَطْوٌ and اختطى, both with the same meaning. Same as مَشَى, and also اِخْتَاطَ [see article خيط], which is formed by transposition.

, (S, Msb, K, &c.,) aor. يَخْطُو , (Msb,) inf. n. خَطْوٌ ; (Msb, K;) and اختطى ; (S, K;) said of a man (S, Msb, TA) [and of a beast]; both signify the same; (S, K;) He stepped, paced, or walked; (MA, KL;) i. q. مَشَى ; (M, Msb, K;) as also اِخْتَاطَ , [which see in art. خيط ,] formed by transposition. (K.) You say, خَطَوْتُ خَطْوَةً وَاحِدَةً [I stepped one step]. (JK.) [And وَسَّعَ الخَطْوَ He stepped wide.] See also the last sentence of the next paragraph.

Form 2خطّى2 senses

Core sense — he made it pass over, he made it missgenerated

2.1God made, or may God make, a land's [rain-giving] star pass it over and send no rain on it—خَطَّى ٱللّٰهُ نَوْءَهَا

He made to pass over.

But here the verb is, or may be, originally خَطَّطَ, with the final ط changed into ى; so in article خطأ. [See Form 2 in article خطأ.]

According to Fr, خَطَّى السَّهْمَ and خطأ are synonymous [as meaning He made the arrow to pass over, or to miss, the mark]; in article خطأ.

[may evil be made to pass him; or] may evil be repelled from him—خُطِّىَ عَنْهُ السُّوْءُ

may it be removed, or put away, from you—خُطِّىَ عَنْكَ

Said in praying for a man.

Or خُطِّئَ عَنْكَ السُّوْءُ. So ISk, in article خطأ.

2.2step leisurely—خَطِّى

The vulgar say this to a she-ass, or to a she-camel or other beast, in a slippery or difficult place. It means اِمْشِى, for اِمْشِى رُوَيَدًا; but the correct word is اُخْطُِى, the feminine imperative of خَطَا.

He made to pass over: so in the saying, خَطَّى ٱللّٰهُ نَوْءَهَا God made, or may God make, its (a land's) [rain-giving] star or asterism to pass it over, and not send rain upon it: (TA in art. خطأ :) but in this case the verb is, (Mgh in that art.,) or may be, (TA ibid.,) originally خَطَّطَ , the final ط being changed into ى . I stepped, or walked, over him, or it; or I passed over and beyond him, or it.

رَكِبَهُمْ. And so also اِخْتَطَاهُمْ.

I stepped over, or passed beyond, the necks of the people—تَخَطَّيْتُ رِقَابَ النَّاسِ

he saw a man passing step by step—رَأَى رَجُلًا يَتَخَطَّى رِقَابَ النَّاسِ

Said in a tradition about Friday, of one who came too late to the Friday prayers, as is shown in article انى: over the necks of the people who were already in their ranks in the mosque.

such a one will not step over, or beyond, the tent-rope—فُلَانٌ لَا يَتَخَطَّى عَنِ الطُّنُبِ

I passed over [to such a thing or place or person]—تَخَطَّيْتُ كَذَا

That is, he will not go far from the tent to relieve himself, because of his foulness, vileness and uncleanness.

One should not say تَخَطَّأْتُ in this sense, with ء.

[what was disliked or hated, or evil, passed over him; not alighting upon him]—تخطّاهُ المَكْرُوهُ

[I passed over others to him with what was disliked or hated, or evil]—تَخَطَّيْتُ إِلَيْهِ بِالمَكْرُوهِ

I stepped, or walked, over him, or it: (Msb:) or I passed over and beyond him, or it: (S:) or تخطّى النَّاسَ He went over the people, ( رَكِبَهُمْ ,) and passed beyond them; and so اِخْتَطَاهُمْ . A step, or pace, meaning a single act of stepping, pacing, or walking. Plural of paucity خَطَوَاتٌ; plural of multitude خِطَآءٌ.

Imra-el-Keys says: [She has bounds like the bounding of gazelles; and a valley is stepped over by her with leisurely steps, and a valley is trampled over by her rapidly as though it were rained upon]

لَهَا وَثَبَاتٌ كَوَثْبِ الشِّبَآءِفَوَادٍ خِطَآءٌ وَوَادٍ مَطِرْ

That is, one time she steps and holds back from running, and one time she runs with a running like rain.

But AO relates it otherwise, with فَوَادٍ خَطِيطٌ [literally, and a valley is not rained upon]; and some substitute كَصَوْبِ الخَرِيفِ [like the pouring rain of the autumn].

A step, or pace, meaning the space between the two feet [in walking or running]. Plurals of paucity خُطْوَاتٌ, خُطُوَاتٌ and خُطَوَاتٌ; plural of multitude خُطًى.

between the two sayings there is little difference—بَيْنَ القَوْلَيْنِ خُطٍى يَسِيرَةٌ

[follow not] the ways of the Devil—لَا تَتَّبِعُوا خُطُوَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ

In the Qur'ān 2:163 and elsewhere; or it means the footsteps of the Devil. Some read خُطْوَات, and some, according to Lth, خُطُؤَات, which Az says has no meaning.

A step, or pace, as meaning the space between the two feet [in walking or running]: pl. (of pauc., S) خُطْوَاتٌ (S, Msb, K) and خُطُوَاتٌ and خُطَوَاتٌ (S, Msb) and (of mult., S) خُطًى . (S, Msb, K.) One says, قَرَّبَ ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْكَ الخُطْوَةَ , meaning May God make short to thee the space, or distance. (TA.) And بَيْنَ القَوْلَيْنِ خُطٍى يَسِيرَةٌ Between the two sayings is little difference.
