muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarخُطْبَةٌ خِطْبَةٌ خَطَابَةٌ خَطَبٌ
Core sense — he recited a sermon; he asked for a woman in marriagegenerated
1.1[he recited a خُطْبَة] عَلَى المِنْبَرِ [on the pulpit]—خَطَبَ خُطْبَةً
or, according to some, this is a noun used as a maṣdar; also خَطَابَةٌ.
Said of a خَطِيب or خَاطِب.
Also اختطب in the same sense.
[he recited a خُطْبَة to the people, and over the people, that is, on the pulpit, beneath which they sat]—خَطَبَ القَوْمَ
.
he delivered an exhortation, or admonition, to the people—عَلَى القَوْمِ
1.1.1he asked for the woman in marriage—خَطَبَ المَرْأَةَ
Muḍāriʿ as above, or this is a simple noun.
خَطْبٌ, خِطِّيبَى and اختطبها have the same meaning.
In the following verse of ʿAdee Ibn-Zeyd, about Jedheemeh El-Abrash and his asking Ez-Zebbā in marriage: [For the asking in marriage of her who acted perfidiously and treacherously: for they (that is, women) are possessed of secret malevolence: may they be disgraced and accursed:]
shāhidلِخِطِّيبَى الَّتِى غَدَرَتْ وَخَانَتْوَهُنَّ ذَوَاتُ غَائِلَةٍ لُحِينَا
There خطّيبى has the same meaning as خِطْبَة. Lth says it is a simple noun, but AM says he is wrong and that it is a maṣdar.
he asked the people for the woman in marriage—خَطَبَ المَرْأَةَ إِلَى القَوْمِ
[he asked such a one for a woman in marriage]—خَطَبَ إِلَى فُلَانٍ
he asked for a woman in marriage when another had already done so—خَطَبَ عَلَى خِطْبَةِ أَخِيهِ
This is the case where she had inclined to the other man, he and she had agreed on a dowry and approved each other, and nothing remained but to conclude the contract; doing this is forbidden. It is not forbidden to ask for a woman in marriage when another has done so if she and he have not agreed, nor approved each other, and neither of them has inclined to the other.
