muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarإِخْطَآءٌ خِطْءٌ
Core sense — he did wrong, he made a mistake; he committed a singenerated
1.1he did wrong; he committed a mistake, or an error—خَطِئَ
Synonymous with اخطأ, maṣdar إِخْطَآءٌ and خَاطِئَةٌ; this last, mentioned by AAF on the authority of AZ, is irregular in a triliteral [unaugmented] verb, and more so in a quadriliteral [i.e. a triliteral augmented by one letter]. It is also synonymous with تخطّأ.
[And if this and similar explanations are correct, خَطَأْ may be a maṣdar of the first of these verbs, and a quasi-maṣdar of the second and third.]
Or it is اخطأ and تخطّأ that have this meaning.
he committed a sin, a crime, or an act of disobedience for which he deserved punishment—خَطِئَ
maṣdar خِطْءٌ and خِطْأَةٌ.
he committed a fault, an offence, or an act of disobedience, unintentionally—خَطِئَ
Or: he committed a fault, an offence, or an act of disobedience [in an absolute sense].
So according to AO, or A' Obeyd. The same is said of اخطأ.
Others say that خَطِئَ means [he committed a fault, etc.] in religion, and اخطأ in anything, intentionally or unintentionally; and that خَطِئَ is in religion, while اخطأ is in calculation [and the like].
he pursued a wrong way in his religion, intentionally or otherwise—خَطِئَ فِى دِينِهِ
So according to Ibn-'Arafeh. In a MS copy of the K and in the CK, فى ذَنْبِهِ.
he pursued a wrong way in his religion, intentionally or otherwise—اخطأ
he committed an act of disobedience intentionally—خَطِئَ
he did wrong, meaning to do right—اخطأ
you did wrong in what you did, intentionally—خَطِئْتَ بِمَا صَنَعْتُهُ
you did wrong in what you did, unintentionally—أَخْطَأْتَ مَا صَنَعْتَهُ
So according to the 'Ináyeh, and the like is said in the A.
[This distinction agrees with general usage.]
So according to AHeyth.
[Or بِمَا صنعتة or فِيمَا صنعته.]
