Core sense — he contended with him, disputed with him, litigated with himgenerated
Maṣdar مُخَاصَمَةٌ and خِصَامٌ, and [quasi-maṣdar] خُصُومَةٌ, the last said in the S to be a simple noun.
He contended with him in an altercation, disputed with him, or litigated with him; the same as نَازَعَهُ, in art. نزع.
El-Harāllee: الخِصَامُ means the saying which the listener is made to hear, and which is made to enter his ear-hole, such as may make him refrain, or desist, from his assertion and his claim.
The muḍāriʿ of the latter verb is أَخْصِمُهُ with kesr, or أَخْصُمُهُ with ḍamm, or not with ḍamm, or both forms of the muḍāriʿ are used, according to AHei; the latter agrees with analogy, the former is irregular, for the regular muḍāriʿ of an unaugmented sound verb in a case of this kind is with ḍamm, as in عَالَمْتُهُ فَعَلَمْتُهُ, if it has not a faucial letter for its middle radical, in which case it is with fetḥ, as in فَاخَرْتُهُ فَفَخَرْتُهُ, according to the opinion of Ks, though this is against the opinion generally held.
The maṣdar of خَصَمْتُهُ is خَصْمٌ.
The خُصْم is the edge, or side, of the bed.
Core sense — he dictated to him his plea against his opponentgenerated

Core sense — they contended with one another, disputed, litigatedgenerated
They contended in altercation, disputed, or litigated, one with another; the same as تخاصموا, both meaning as above.
One who reads يَخَصِّمُونَ [in the Qur 36:49] means يَخْتَصِمُونَ, changing the ت into ص and incorporating [it into the other ص], and transferring its vowel to the خ.
Some read يَخِصِّمُونَ without transferring that vowel, because a sākin letter, when it is made movent, is [regularly] made so with kesr.
AA slurred the vowel of the خ; the pronunciation [يَخْصِّمُونَ] with two sākin letters together is incorrect.
Hamzeh read يَخْصِمُونَ, that is, with the خ sākin and with kesr to the ص.
They will not (have to) wait for aught but a single Blast: it will seize them while they are yet disputing among themselves!Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
Given in art. قمط.
Given in art. دلو.
This explanation, given by J, is a mistake; the verb is correctly with ض dotted.
"They will say there in their mutual bickerings:
"No knowledge have I of the Chiefs on high, when they discuss (matters) among themselves.
In the end will ye (all), on the Day of Judgment, settle your disputes in the presence of your Lord.
Occurrences of this form in the Qur’ān, not Lane’s choice of verse. They show the word in use; they do not say which sense above applies. Where more occur than are shown, the shortest āyāt are chosen.
Core sense — an adversary in dispute, an antagonist, a litigantgenerated
An adversary in contention or altercation, in dispute, or in litigation; an antagonist; a litigant; as also خَصِيمٌ.
The former is used alike as masculine and feminine, and as singular, dual and plural, because it is originally a maṣdar. [See an example of its use in a plural sense in a verse cited under جَنَفٌ.]
But it also has the dual form خَصْمَانِ, and the plurals خُصُومٌ and خِصَامٌ, and perhaps أَخْصَامٌ [which is a plural of paucity], or this may be plural of خَصِمٌ.
The plural of خَصِيمٌ is خُصَمَآءُ and خُصْمَانٌ.
Has the Story of the Disputants reached thee? Behold, they climbed over the wall of the private chamber;

Also the [front lower] extremity of a water-bag of the kind termed رَاوِيَة, the one opposite to the عَزْلَآء; [in the CK, الزّاوِيَةِ and الغَزْلاءِ are wrongly put for الرَّاوِيَةِ and العَزْلَآءِ].
The upper extremity — correctly, the extremities, at which are the loops by which it is hung on the side of the camel — is called the عصم [that is, عُصْم, plural of عِصَامٌ].
Plural [of paucity] أَخْصَامٌ, and [of multitude] خُصُومٌ.
But some say that the أَخْصَام of the water-bag termed مَزَادَة, and its خُصُوم, are its corners.
The خُصُوم of a cloud are its sides.
أَخْصَامُ العَيْنِ means the part, or parts, of the eye where the edges of the lids close together.
Also a gap, or an intervening space: الأَخْصَامُ [plural of الخُصْمُ] is said to signify الفرج [that is, الفُرَجُ, plural of الفُرْجَةُ].
Said of an unsound, corrupt, or disordered affair; it occurs in a tradition, meaning that the state of affairs is disordered and distressing, and cannot be set right and repaired.
[This is the plural.]
Also the lower parts, or stocks — أُصُولٌ — of [trees of the kind called] سَرَحَات [plural of سَرْحَةٌ].

The plural of the first is خَصِمُونَ, which occurs in the Qur 43:58; and perhaps أَخْصَامٌ, or this may be a plural of خَصْمٌ.

Core sense — a bead, or gem, worn as an amulet when disputinggenerated

In the K, مِنْ حُرُوزِ الرِّجَالِ, but correctly, as in the M, مِنْ خَزَرِ الرِّجَالِ.
Sometimes it is beneath the gem of the man's signet-ring, when the gem is small; it may also be in his button; and sometimes they put it in the ذُؤَابَة [or cord by which the hilt is occasionally attached to the guard] of the sword.
