Form 1خَصَّهُ بِالشَّىْءِ3 senses
muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـِيَفْعِلُmaṣdarخَصٌّ خُصُوصٌ

Core sense — he distinguished him specially, above others; it was peculiar to him; he was poorgenerated

1.1he distinguished him specially by the thing, above or to the exclusion of others; he specified him by itخَاصَّةٌ

Or بِكَذَا; maṣdar خَصٌّ, خُصُوصٌ, خَصُوصٌ, خَصُوصِيَّةٌ and خُصُوصِيَّةٌ. Of the last two, the former is the more chaste, and is the form given in the Fs and its commentaries; the ى in it is said to be the relative ى with the ى that is characteristic of a maṣdar, while in the latter it is said to mark intensiveness.

MF thinks this needs consideration, because the ى is also said to be — and by some more commonly — without teshdeed, as in كَرَاهِيَةٌ, عَلَانِيَةٌ and خِصِّيصَى, like مِكِّيثَى, which is said to be the only other instance of this measure [but some others might be added, as دِلِّيلَى and فِخِّيرَى and قِتِّيتَى].

And خِصِّيصَآءُ [like مِكِّيثَآءُ]; of these last two, each of which has an intensive meaning, the former is the chaste and commonly known form.

And خُصِّيَّةٌ, or خِصِّيَّةٌ, or خَصِيَّةٌ, written by Sgh with damm, and تَخِصَّةٌ, according to Ibn-ʿAbbád, or, as some say, خَصُوصِيَّةٌ and خِصِّيَّةٌ [or خُصِّيَّةٌ or خَصِّيَّةٌ], are each a quasi-maṣdar.

Synonym: فَضَّلَهُ.

he assigned such a thing to him alone, exclusively of othersدُونَ غَيْرِهِ

اختصّهُ بِهِ means the same, as also اخصّهُ [but I know no other authority for this], and خصّصهُ, or this last has an intensive meaning.

he made it belong to him alone, in particularمَيَّزَهُ
he distinguished him by his love, or favoured him with it above anotherخَصَّهُ بِالُودِّ

As to the saying of AZ: [If a man distinguishes me above others purposely by his love of me, notwithstanding the distance of each from the other, it will not be disowned by me]

shāhid
إِنِ ٱمْرَأٌ خَصَّنِى عَمْدًا مَوَدَّتَهُعَلَى التَّنَانِى لَعِنْدِى غَيْرُ مَكْفُورِ

. The meaning is خَصَّنِى بِمَوَدَّتِهِ, or it may be خَصَّنِى لِمَوَدَّتِهِ إِيَّاىَ [the TA has بِمَوَدَّتِهِ, which is clearly a miscopying]; for, says ISd, we have not heard خَصَّهُ [or rather خَصَّ] used as doubly transitive.

he gave him such a thing in large quantity, or abundantlyخَصَّهُ بِكَذَا
he singled him, or it, out by mention; he mentioned him, or it, particularlyخَصَّهُ بِالذِّكْرِ
he pointed particularly to him, or it, in what he said; he meant him, or it, in particularخَصَّهُ
he specified such a thing out of it; he particularly excepted such a thing from itخَصَّ مِنْهُ كَذَا
he took, or chose, him, or it, particularly for himselfخَصَّهُ لِنَفْسِهِ

اختصّهُ لِنَفْسِهِ, خَصَّ بِهِ نَفْسَهُ and اختصّ بِهِ نَفْسَهُ mean the same.

he chooses such a one for himself as his special intimateهُوَ يَسْتَخِصُّ فُلَانًا

يَسْتَخْلِصُهُ means the same: he appropriates such a one purely to himself, with no partner (see that verb). Mentioned in the articles خلص and خلص.

he treated him with partiality; he was partial towards himاختصّهُ

This meaning is implied by the first explanation in this article, and the verb is often used in it.

1.2it was, or became, particular, peculiar, or special; restricted to one or more persons, places, or things; distinct from others, not generalخَصَّ

[against the general rule, by which it should be خَصِصَ, since the verb is intransitive and of the measure فَعَلَ according to the Msb] [and apparently خَصُوصِيَّةٌ and خُصُوصِيَّةٌ in modern usage].

The opposite of عَمَّ.

اختصّ means the same. Each of them, followed by لَهُ, means: he, or it, belonged or pertained to him, or it, particularly, specially, or exclusively; it was, or became, peculiar to him, or it. See also that verb below.

1.3figurative · مجازhe was, or became, poor, in a state of povertyخَصَّ

Second person خَصِصْتَ; maṣdar, apparently, خَصَاصَةٌ, خَصَاصٌ and خَصَاصَآءُ.

اختصّ means the same.

(Msb.) You say, خَصَّهُ بِالُودِّ He distinguished him &c. by love, or affection; or favoured him in preference to another, or others, thereby. (K, TA.) As to the saying of AZ, 1 [If a man distinguish me above, or from, or exclusively of, others, purposely, by his love, or because of his love of me, notwithstanding distance of each from the other, it will not be disacknowledged with me,] the meaning is, خَصَّنِى بِمَوَدَّتِهِ ; or it may be خَصَّنِى لِمَوَدَّتِهِ إِيَّاىَ [in the TA بِمَوَدَّتِهِ , which is evidently a mistranscription]; for, says ISd, we have not heard خَصَّهُ [or rather خَصَّ ] doubly transitive. (TA.) And [hence] خَصَّهُ بِكَذَا also signifies He gave him such a thing in large quantity, or abundantly. (TA.) Used as a noun, it is synonymous with خَاصَّةٌ, in which the ة is corroborative, and which means distinguished people, persons of distinction, the distinguished sort; the opposite of عَامَّةٌ. Or the former is the opposite of عَامٌّ and the latter the opposite of عَامَّةٌ.

The plural of both is خَوَاصٌّ and خِصَّانٌ and خُصَّانٌ; or, by rule, the first of these is the plural of خَاصَّةٌ only, and, judging from other instances, we should regard the second and third as more probably plurals of خَاصٌّ.

However that may be, خِصَّانٌ is synonymous with خَوَاصُّ, and so is خُصَّانٌ.

الخَاصَّةُ وَالعَمَّةُ means the same.

That is, خَوَاصُّ مِنْهُمْ.

1.4this is my particular, or special, or choice, friendهٰذَا خَاصَّتِى

In some instances it seems also to be synonymous with خَاصَّةٌ, meaning a particular, or special, friend, intimate, familiar, companion, associate, attendant, dependent, or servant.

That word is explained in the T as meaning a person whom you have appropriated, particularly distinguished, taken, or chosen for yourself, as a friend and the like; and it is used both as a singular and as a plural.

they are my particular, or special, or choice, friendsهُمْ خَاصَّتِى
such a one belongs exclusively to such a one, as his particular, or special, friendفُلَانٌ خَاصٌّ لِفُلَانٍ

Or بِفُلَانٍ, apparently meaning لِفُلَانٍ, unless it is miscopied and this last is the right reading, which I think much the more probable; and مُخَصٌّ means the same.

(A.) You say also, فُلَانٌ خَاصٌّ لِفُلَانٍ , (Kull p. 174,) or بِفُلَانٍ , (so in the L,) [app. meaning لِفُلَانٍ , unless it be mistranscribed, and the latter be the correct reading, which I think much the more probable;] i. e., Such a one belongs exclusively [as a particular, or peculiar, or special, friend, &c.,] to such a one; (Kull;) and مُخَصٌّ signifies the same. (L.) See the dim. of خَاصَّةٌ , (namely خُوَيْصَّةٌ ,) below.

Core sense — a property peculiar to a thing; persons of distinctiongenerated

1

See خَاصٌّ, in four places.

1.1

It also means a property of a thing that is not found, or does not exist, either wholly or partly, in another thing.

And خَاصِّيَّةٌ [thus correctly written; I have always found it written so except by Golius and those who have probably copied him, who write it without the sheddeh to the ى] is used for a property, or particular virtue, which is an unknown cause of a known effect, such as that by which a medicine works. The former differs from the latter in being applied by convention to an effect, or effective property, whether the cause of its existence is known or not.

The plural of the former is خَوَاصُّ, in keeping with analogy and usage, as عَوَامُّ is the plural of عَامَّةٌ; the plural of the latter is خَاصِّيَّاتٌ [and خَصَائِصُ], and خَوَاصُّ is an ism jamʿ of it, not a plural.

From the Kull p. 174, where all the words cited above stand without vowel-signs, as being well known. Both خاصّة and خاصّيّة, as explained here, are perhaps post-classical, though I am not certain of this; and both are sometimes used to mean the peculiar nature of a thing, also called its essence.

Core sense — a little, or dear, special friend, companion, or servantgenerated

1figurative · مجاز — inferredkeep to the little, or dear, particular friend of your own selfعَلَيْكَ بِخُوَيْصَّةِ نَفْسِكَ

Diminutive of خَاصَّةٌ [like دُوَيْبَّةٌ, q. v., diminutive of دَابَّةٌ], originally خُوَيْصِصَةٌ, the ى being sākin because the ى of the diminutive cannot carry a vowel.

Said in a tradition. So it seems to mean according to Z, who mentions it among the expressions proper to this article; but according to the TK it appears to be figurative, the meaning being said there to be a person's own particular state, or condition.

a little, young, particular, or special, servantخويصّة

So used in another tradition.

strive to be before six things with [good] worksبَادِرُوا بِالأَعْمَالِ سِتًّا الدَّجَّالِ وَكَذَا وَكَذَا وَخُوَيْصَّةَ أَحَدِكُمْ

In another tradition: the six things are Antichrist, and such and such things, and the event of death specially appointed to any one of you — or, I would rather say, the awful special awaiter of any one of you; though it is asserted that the diminutive form is used here to mark low estimation of what it means beside what follows it, namely the resurrection, and the rest.

on this sense Properly it means a little, or young, particular, or peculiar, or special, friend, companion, associate, attendant, or servant; and it is used in other senses, like other diminutives, implying low estimation, and also affection, and awe.
