maṣdarخَشْيَةٌmuḍāriʿيَخْشَى

Core sense — he feared him, or it; he dreaded him, or it, with reverencegenerated

1.1he feared him, or it; he dreaded him, or itخَشِيَهُ

maṣdar خَشْيَةٌ, خَشْىٌ, and خِشْىٌ [the second and third erroneously written in the CK خَشًا and, by indication, خِشًا], and also خَشَاةٌ and خَشْيَانٌ, though it has been said that the only instances of this kind are شَنْآنٌ and لَيَّانٌ [see the first of these two]; but in one copy of the M it is found written خِشْيَانٌ, and مَخْشَاةٌ, and مَخْشِيَةٌ.

He feared; synonym خَافَ. Er-Rāghib and others: he dreaded, or feared with reverence, veneration, respect, or awe.

1.1.1hopeخَشَيْتُهُ

Er-Rāghib: this word also signifies hope.

[you have prayed much for death, so that] I hope [it may be easier for you when it comes]لَقَدْ أَكْثَرْتَ مِنَ الدُّعَآءِ بِالمَوْتِ حَتَّى خَشِيتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ ذٰلِكَ أَسْهَلَ لَكَ عِنْدَ نُزُولِهِ

The saying of Ibn-'Abbás to 'Omar, explained in this way.

1.1.2I knew, or knowخَشِيتُ

In this sense it is synonymous with عَلِمْتُ.

So it is said to mean in the saying of the poet: [And I know assuredly that he who follows the right direction will dwell in the gardens of Paradise with the Prophet Mohammad]

وَلَقَدْ خَشِيتُ بِأَ مَنْ تَبِعَ الهُدَىسكَنَ الجِنَانَ مَعَ النَّبِىِّ مُحَمَّدِ

. Or the meaning may be, I hope.

1.1.3and we disapproved that he should bring excessive disobedience and ingratitude upon them bothفَخَشِينَا أَنْ يُرْهِقَهُمَا طُغْيَانًا وَكُفْرًا

In the Qur'ān 18:79. So Akh; and Zj says the same, explaining it as the saying of El-Khidr. Fr: the meaning is, and we knew. See also أَزْهَقَ.

79:45
إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُنذِرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰهَا

Thou art but a Warner for such as fear it.

80:9
وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ

And with fear (in his heart),

87:10
سَيَذَّكَّرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰ

[And خَشِىَ مِنْهُ , meaning the same: or He feared, or dreaded, what might happen to him from him, or it. And خَشِىَ عَلَيْهِ شَيْئًا He feared, or dreaded, for him a thing.] And فَعَلْتُ ذٰلِكَ خَشَاةَ أَنْ يَكُونَ كَذَا [I did that in fear, or dread, that such a thing might happen]. (IAar, TA.) خَشَيْتُهُ also signifies Hope. (Er-Rághib, TA.) And the saying of Ibn-'Abbás to 'Omar, لَقَدْ أَكْثَرْتَ مِنَ الدُّعَآءِ بِالمَوْتِ حَتَّى خَشِيتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ ذٰلِكَ أَسْهَلَ لَكَ عِنْدَ نُزُولِهِ , is explained as meaning [Verily thou hast prayed much for death, so that] I hope [that it may be easier to thee when it happens]. (TA.) And sometimes خَشِيتُ means عَلِمْتُ [I knew, or know]. (Msb.) 2.1frighten the wolf with the snareخَشِّ ذُؤَالَةَ بِالحِبَالَةِ

. He frightened him, or made him fear; or made him dread, or fear with reverence (see form 1); بِالأَمْرِ [with the thing, or event].

, inf. n. تَخْشِيَةٌ , He frightened him, or made him to fear; (S, K;) [or he made him to dread; or to fear with reverence, &c.; (see 1;)] بِالأَمْرِ [with the thing, or event]. (TA.) One says, خَشِّ ذُؤَالَةَ بِالحِبَالَةِ , meaning [Frighten thou] the wolf [with the snare]. (S. 3.1.1he left, forsook, or abandoned such a one, being left by himخَاشَى فُلَانًا

خَاشَانِى فَخَشَيْتُهُ , (A'Obeyd, S, K,) aor. of the latter أَخْشِيهِ , (A'Obeyd, S,) [I vied with him in fear or dread, and] I was more fearful [or dreading] than he. Feminine خَشْيَا [in the CK, erroneously, خَشْيَآءُ], like غَضْبَى, feminine of غَضْبَانُ, according to rule; also خَشْيَانَةٌ, mentioned by El-Karzookee and thought by MF to be of the dialect of Asad; or this last signifies a woman who fears, or dreads, everything, as in the Tekmileh.

Plural خَشَايَا, pluralized in the same way as adjectives signifying diseases, such as حَيَاطَى, because الخَشْيَة is like a disease.
