muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُ·ـِيَفْعِلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُmaṣdarخُسْرَانٌ خَسْرٌ إِخْسَارٌ
Core sense — he lost, or suffered loss; he went astray; he made it deficientgenerated
1.1figurative · مجازhe lost, or suffered loss, in selling—فِى البَيْعِ
also خَسَرَ, but this last is an unusual form [except in the sense of أَخْسَرَ].
Maṣdar خُسْرَانٌ, خُسْرٌ and خَسَارَةٌ — the only forms assigned to the verb when it is used of traffic — and also خُسُرٌ, خَسْرٌ, خَسَرٌ and خَسَارٌ.
he lost in his selling—فِى بَيَعِهِ
he lost in his traffic—فِى تِجَارَتِهِ
He lost, or suffered loss or diminution; or he was deceived, cheated, or beguiled.
Loss is the original meaning: he suffered diminution of his capital and lost part of it; and he lost his capital altogether.
his traffic was losing, or an occasion of loss—خَسِرَتْ تِجَارَتُهُ
خُسْرَانٌ is attributed to an action as well as to a man, and in that case the verb is used figuratively; the opposite is رَبِحَتْ.
It is also used of personal acquisitions, such as health, safety, intellect, faith, and the reward of obedience to God, which God has declared [Kur 22:11 and 39:17] to be a clear خُسْرَان, since there is nothing like it.
he lost his intellect—خَسِرَ عَقْلَهُ
[In a phrase of this kind the noun immediately following the verb may be considered as in the accusative case because a preposition, namely فِى, has been dropped, for] it is said that خَسِرَ is never used other than intransitively, though this has been contradicted on the ground of the following phrase in the Kur [22:11], and the like:
he lost his property—مَالَهُ
he has lost the things of the present life and of the life to come—خَسِرَ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَ ٱلْآخِرَةَ
who shall have lost themselves, or their own souls, and their families—ٱلَّذِينَ خَسِرُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَ أَهْلِيهِمْ
That is, they lost themselves, or their own souls, by their having erred, and their families by their having caused them to err, or by being separated from them for ever; or by being made to remain for ever in Hell, and by not gaining access to the حُور prepared in Paradise [as wives] for the believers. According to Fr: who shall be deceived of their own souls. According to others: who shall have destroyed their own souls.
Qur’ān 22:11 matched to Lane’s own quotation of it Lane cites “Kur xxii. 11”
Qur’ān 39:15 approximate — somewhere between 39:5 and 39:45 Lane cites “Kur xxxix. 17”
Lane cites “Bd in iv. 118” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
Qur’ān 22:11 Lane quotes this verse
There are among men some who serve Allah, as it were, on the verge: if good befalls them, they are, therewith, well content; but if a trial comes to them, they turn on their faces: they lose both this world and the Hereafter: that is loss for all to see!Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.1.1
Also: he experienced, or saw, that he was a loser; his loss became clear to him. So in the Kur 40 [verse 78 and] the last verse.
1.1.2
Also, with all the maṣdar forms mentioned above: he erred, went astray, or missed the right way; or he became lost, he perished, or he died. Synonymous with ضَلَّ and هَلَكَ.
1.2he made it defective, or deficient—خَسَرَهُ
So A 'Obeyd, IAar and Zj. Muḍāriʿ خَسِرَ and خَسُرَ; maṣdar خَسْرٌ, خُسْرَانٌ and اخسرهُ; A 'Obeyd also gives the maṣdars إِخْسَارٌ and خسّرهُ.
A 'Obeyd: said of the weight, the measure, the thing weighed, and the balance, by diminishing the weight.
The second of these forms is more common in this sense than the first and the third.
For وَ لَا تُخْسِرُوا ٱلْمِيزَانَ in the Kur 55:8 there are three other readings: تَخْسُرُوا, تَخْسُروا and تَخْسَرُوا; in the last of these the preposition فِى is left out after the verb.
Qur’ān 55:8 approximate — somewhere between 55:1 and 55:26 Lane cites “Kur lv. 8”
Lane cites “Bd in lv. 8” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
Qur’ān 55:9 located by this root inside the range Lane’s citation allows
وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلْوَزْنَ بِٱلْقِسْطِ وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا۟ ٱلْمِيزَانَSo establish weight with justice and fall not short in the balance.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

It is also used in relation to personal acquisitions; such as health, and safety, and intellect, and faith, and the recompense or reward of obedience [to God], which God has declared [Kur xxii. 11 and xxxix. 17] to be manifest خُسْرَان , (B,) since there is none like it. (TA.) Also [He experienced, or saw, that he was loser; or] his having lost became manifest to him: so in the Kur xl. [78 and] last verse. (TA.) Also (with all the forms of the inf. n. above mentioned, K,) He erred; went astray; deviated from, or lost, or missed, the right way: or he became lost; he perished; or he died: syn. ضَلَّ , (K,) and هَلَكَ . (Msb.) خَسَرَهُ , (A 'Obeyd, IAar, Zj, S, A, &c.,) aor. خَسِرَ (Zj, Msb) and خَسُرَ , (Bd in lv. 8,) inf. n. خَسْرٌ (Msb, K) and خُسْرَانٌ ; (K;) and اخسرهُ , (A 'Obeyd, Zj, S, A, Msb,) inf. n. إِخْسَارٌ ; (Msb, K;) and خسّرهُ ; (A;) He made it defective, or deficient; (A 'Obeyd, IAar, Zj, S, A, Msb, K;) namely, the weight, and the measure; (Zj, TA;) and the thing weighed; (TA;) and the balance, (A 'Obeyd, IAar, Zj, A, Msb,) by diminishing the weight.
