Core sense — he was, or became, base, abased, or disgraced; he was ashamedgenerated
1.1he became disgraced, and was confounded, or perplexed, by the disgrace—
He was, or became, base, abased, abject, vile, despicable, or ignominious.; maṣdar خِزْىٌ, خَزًى, خِزْيَةٌ, and مَخْزَاةٌ [or these last two are simple substantives].
According to ISk: he fell into trial, or affliction; or he fell into trial, or affliction, and evil, and something that exposed him to disgrace, and so became base, abased, despicable, or ignominious. The same is said of اِخْزَوَى.
اِرْعَوَى, like خِزْىٌ, means disgrace, or ignominy: so in the Qur 5:37 and elsewhere.
Or its primary meaning is a state of abasement, vileness, or ignominy of which one is ashamed: so according to Er-Rāghib, Bd, and the Ksh.
El-Harállee: or it is the showing of foul actions or qualities, for the showing of which one deserves punishment.

20:134
And if We had inflicted on them a penalty before this, they would have said: "Our Lord! If only Thou hadst sent us a messenger, we should certainly have followed Thy Signs before we were humbled and put to shame."
