Core sense — a repository, a store-room; a closet; the heartgenerated

A small chamber within a large chamber; [a closet; also called in the present day خَزْنَةٌ and a cupboard].

A place in which things are stored, laid up, kept, preserved, or guarded; a repository; [a magazine; a store-room].

مَخْزَنٌ, with fetḥ to the ز, like مَقْعَدٌ, has the same meaning; and so does مَخْزِنٌ, like مَجْلِسٌ [which is irregular, since the muḍāriʿ of خَزَنَ is يَخْزُنُ].

The first of these should not be pronounced with fetḥ [that is, خَزَانَة], as the common people are given to pronounce it.

The plural of the first is خَزَائِنُ, and that of مخزن is مَخَازِنُ.

[Hence, خِزَانَةُ كُتُبٍ a library, or a bookcase; and خِزَانَةُ سِلَاحٍ an armoury.]
