The nose — properly, according to Th, of a beast of prey; or its fore part; or a large, or an elevated, nose; or the part on which a man closes the حَنَكَانِ [or upper and lower portions of the mouth].

Also خُرْطُمٌ, sometimes written خُرْطُمٌّ by poetic licence.

Or it means also the part on which the front of the حَنَكَانِ closes; and a snout, a sense in which it is often used, as in the description of the fish called كَوْسَج. Also the proboscis of an elephant, and, by likeness to it, of a flea. Plural خَرَاطِيمُ.

In the Qur'ān 68:16; the nose of a man is called by this term figuratively.

Or it means we will brand him on the face.

Er-Rāghib: or it is like the phrase جَدَعْتُ أَنْفَهُ, and means we will mark him with disgrace that cannot be removed, the term خرطوم, which means the proboscis of an elephant, being applied to his nose because his nose is regarded as unseemly.
