Form 1خَرَصَ النَّخْلَ4 senses · 2 main

[and خَرِصَ, as appears from what follows] [and خِرْصٌ is also allowable, as appears below]: he computed by conjecture the quantity of the fruit on the palm-trees; or he computed by conjecture how much of the fresh ripe dates on the palm-trees would become dried dates.

Or forming an opinion of a thing one is not certain about.

Muḍāriʿ خَرُصَ and خَرِصَ; maṣdar خَرْصٌ and خِرْصٌ. ISh says the second of these is like عِلْمٌ as maṣdar of عَلِمَ, and Az says it is allowable because a simple noun is put in the place of a maṣdar.

Hence خَرْصُ النَّخْلِ and التَّمْرِ [the computing by conjecture of the quantity of fruit on palm-trees, and of dates], because خَرْصٌ is the computing of quantity by opinion, not by knowledge.

Being hungry without being cold is not called خَرَصٌ, but being cold without being hungry is called خَصَرٌ.

وَإِن تُطِعْ أَكْثَرَ مَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يُضِلُّوكَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَخْرُصُونَ

Wert thou to follow the common run of those on earth, they will lead thee away from the way of Allah. They follow nothing but conjecture: they do nothing but lie.

6:148
سَيَقُولُ ٱلَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا۟ لَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مَآ أَشْرَكْنَا وَلَآ ءَابَآؤُنَا وَلَا حَرَّمْنَا مِن شَىْءٍ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ كَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ حَتَّىٰ ذَاقُوا۟ بَأْسَنَا ۗ قُلْ هَلْ عِندَكُم مِّنْ عِلْمٍ فَتُخْرِجُوهُ لَنَآ ۖ إِن تَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنْ أَنتُمْ إِلَّا تَخْرُصُونَ

Those who give partners (to Allah) will say: "If Allah had wished, we should not have given partners to Him nor would our fathers; nor should we have had any taboos." So did their ancestors argue falsely, until they tasted of Our wrath. Say: "Have ye any (certain) knowledge? If so, produce it before us. Ye follow nothing but conjecture: ye do nothing but lie."

10:66
أَلَآ إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَن فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ وَمَا يَتَّبِعُ ٱلَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ شُرَكَآءَ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَخْرُصُونَ

Behold! verily to Allah belong all creatures, in the heavens and on earth. What do they follow who worship as His "partners" other than Allah? They follow nothing but fancy, and they do nothing but lie.

43:20
وَقَالُوا۟ لَوْ شَآءَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ مَا عَبَدْنَـٰهُم ۗ مَّا لَهُم بِذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَخْرُصُونَ

("Ah!") they say, "If it had been the will of (Allah) Most Gracious, we should not have worshipped such (deities)!" Of that they have no knowledge! they do nothing but lie!

(S.) خَرْصٌ signifies The computing quantity by conjecture; (A, K, TA;) conjecturing; opining: or forming an opinion of a thing of which one is not certain: you say, خَرَصَ العَدَدَ , aor. خَرُصَ and خَرِصَ , inf. n. خَرْصٌ and خِرْصٌ , the latter said by ISh to be like عِلْمٌ as inf. n. of عَلِمَ , and said by Az to be allowable because a simple subst. is put in the place of an inf. n., He computed by conjecture the number: and hence خَرْصُ النَّخْلِ , and التَّمْرِ , [the computing by conjecture the quantity of fruit upon palm-trees, and of dates,] because خَرْصٌ is the computing quantity by opinion, not by knowledge. (TA.) خَرْصٌ also signifies Any speaking by opinion, or conjecture. (K, * TA.) You say, خَرَصَ فِيهِ He spoke of him, or it, by opinion, or conjecture. (TK.) And hence, (TA,) خَرَصَ , (S, Msb, K,) aor. خَرُصَ , (S,) inf. n. خَرْصٌ , (S, Msb, K,) He lied; spoke falsely; said what was untrue; (S, Msb, K; *) as also تخرّص . (S.) You say also, عَلَيْهِ ↓ تخرّص He forged a lie against him. (A, K, TA.) And قَالَ ذٰلِكَ تَخَرُّصًا [He said that forging a lie]. (A.) And اخترص القَوْلَ , (A, K, *) and تخرِّصهُ , (A,) He forged the saying. (A, K. *) خَرِصَ , (S, K,) aor. خَرَصَ , (K,) inf. n. خَرَصٌ , (S, A,) He (a man) was hungry and cold: (S, A: *) or hungry in cold. (K.) Being hungry without being cold is not termed خَرَصٌ : but being cold without being hungry is termed خَصَرٌ . (S.)

In the Qur'ān 51:10; that is, cursed be they — those who say that Moḥammad is a poet, and the like, conjecturing what they do not know. Or it may mean those who only form opinions and do not ascertain, and so act according to what they do not know.

One who computes by conjecture the quantity of the fruit upon palm-trees: pl. خُرَّاصٌ . (A, * TA.) A liar; (Msb, TA;) as also خَرَّاصٌ . (S, A, Msb, TA.) قُتِلَ الخَرَّاصُونَ , in the Kur [li. 10], (TA,) means, Slain be the liars; (Fr, Zj, A, Bd, TA;) i. e., cursed be they; (Bd;) who say that Mohammad is a poet, and the like thereof, conjecturing that which they know not: (Fr, TA:) or it may mean, they who only opine, and do not ascertain; and therefore act according to that which they know not.
