Core sense — sealing-clay or wax; a signet-ring; the end, or last part, of a thinggenerated
1
A maṣdar of form 1 [q. v.].
1.1
And a noun: the first watering of seed-produce, or of a sown field; or the turning up of the earth over sown seed and then watering it. Et-Ṭāʾifee.
2.1
Also the clay, or the wax, with which one seals, or stamps, a writing or a thing; or which is sealed, or stamped, on a writing.
[See also خَتَمٌ. And see an example in a verse of Lebeed cited in art. دكن.]
2.2figurative · مجازshe was conducted as a bride to you with her seal of virginity—زُفَّتْ إِلَيْكَ بِخِتَامِهَا
[The hymen, as being the seal of virginity; and so also خَاتَمٌ.]
with the seal of her Lord—بِخَاتَمِ رَبِّهَا
their present was sent to him complete—سِيقَتْ هَدِيَّتُهُمْ إِلَيْهِ بِخِتَامِهَا
This last is apparently from the same meaning; I suppose it to mean that their present was sent to him with what made it perfect or complete, or with what belonged to it.
2.3figurative · مجاز — inferredthe last of the prophets—خَاتَمُ النَّبِيِّينَ
The furthest part of a valley.
The last of a company of men; also خَاتَمٌ and خَاتِمٌ.
In the Kur-ān [33:40]. According to one reading, خَاتُم, with damm to the ت; or خاتمُ الأَنْبِيَآءِ, that is, Moḥammad, who is also called الخَاتَمُ and الخَاتِمُ.
the last that they will perceive of it will be the odour of musk—خِتَامُهُ مِسْكٌ
And the last portion of anything that is drunk.
In the Kur-ān [83:26]. Or, according to 'Alkameh and Mujāhid, its admixture will be musk; according to Ibn-Mes'ood, its result will be the taste of musk.
Fr says that خَاتَمٌ, خَاتِمٌ and خِتَامٌ are nearly the same in meaning; hence the reading of 'Alee, خَاتَمُهُ مِسْكٌ, explained as meaning that when anyone drinks of it he will find the last cup of it to have the odour of musk.
Er-Rāghib: the meaning is that the end, and the last draught, that is, what remains of it, will be in perfume like musk; and the claim that it means it will be sealed with musk is worthless.
[See also خَاتَمٌ and خَاتِمَةٌ.]
3figurative · مجاز — inferredthe places of separation of the joints of horses—خُتُمٌ
Its singulars are this word and خَاتِمٌ, or, according to IAar, خَتَامٌ.
The words used are فُصُوص [q. v.] for the places of separation and مَفَاصِل for the joints.
a signet; generally a signet-ring—خَاتَمٌ
خَأْتَمٌ, خَاتِمٌ (which is more commonly known than خَاتَمٌ), خَاتَامٌ, خِيتَامٌ (written in the CK and TA خَيْتَام), خِتَامٌ (in the K and TA, but omitted in the CK), خَتَمٌ, خَتْمٌ (Ez-Zeyn El-'Irākee), خَيْتَمْ (Ibn-Mālik), خَيْتُومٌ (Ez-Zeyn El-'Irākee) and خَاتِيَامٌ all mean the same.
An ornament for the finger, apparently at first used for sealing or stamping, so that the word belongs to the same class as طَابَعٌ; later, through frequent use, applied also to one not used for that purpose.
Or a ring having a فَصّ of a substance different from its own set in it, that is, having a stone, or gem, set in it; if it has no فَصّ it is called فَتَخَةٌ.
خَاتِمٌ is the agent, the person sealing or stamping; خَاتَمٌ is the thing put on the piece of clay [or wax] for sealing or stamping.
The plural of خَاتَمٌ and خَاتِمٌ is خَوَاتِمٌ, and, properly of خَاتَامٌ, خَوَاتِيمُ.
Sb says that those who use the second plural make it the plural of a singular of the measure فَاعَالٌ, though there is no such form in their language; which shows that he did not know خَاتَامٌ.
The plural of خَتْمٌ is خُتُومٌ.
3.1a seal, or stamp, and a mark—خَاتَمٌ
Amen is the seal and the mark of the Lord of all the beings of the world on his believing servants—آمِينَ خَاتَمُ رَبِّ العَالَمِينَ عَلَى عِبَادِهِ المُؤْمِنِينَ
So in a tradition, where آمِينَ is Amen. This seal, or mark, removes accidents and causes of mischief from them; for the seal of a writing protects it and keeps those who look from seeing what is inside it.
3.2figurative · مجاز — inferredthe end, or last part, and the result, or issue, of a thing of any kind—خَاتِمَةٌ
See also خِتَامٌ, in seven places.
Fr says it is nearly the same in meaning as خِتَامٌ.
the closing portion—مُخْتَتَمٌ
This word particularly means the last part, or portion, of a chapter of the Kur-ān, and of the Kur-ān itself; also a concluding chapter or section, an epilogue, or an appendix.
It is a good word, in frequent use, though the opposite has been asserted.
The opposite of مُفْتَتَحٌ.
the declaration of the praises of God is the opening portion of the Kur-ān, and the prayer for the protection of God is its closing portion—التَّحْمِيدُ مُفْتَتَحُ ٱلْقُرْآنِ وَ ٱلِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مُخْتَتَمُهُ
actions are to be judged as good or evil by their results—الأَعْمَالُ بِخَوَاتِيمِهَا
3.3figurative · مجازthe lower ring of the teat of a mare—خَاتَمٌ
So called by comparison to a signet or seal.
The word for the ring is الحَلْقَةُ الدُّنْيَا, which apparently means the extremity, in which is the orifice; see حَلْقَتَا الرَّحِمِ and حَلْقَةُ الدُّبُرِ in art. حلق.
طُبْيَة is evidently used here as a dialectal variant of طُبْى, that is, the teat, though I do not find it mentioned in its own article in any lexicon; unless مِنْ طُبْيَتِهَا is a miscopying of من طُبْيِهَا.
3.4figurative · مجاز
And the hollow of the back of the neck, which is the cupping-place.
3.5figurative · مجاز — inferred
And the least وَضَح [or whiteness] of the legs of horses, that is, a slight whiteness in the parts next the hoof, less than what is called تَخْدِيمٌ.
