Also اختبزهُ; or this last means he made [or kneaded and baked] it for himself.

Or اختبز means he kneaded flour, made dough of it, and then baked it in a مَلَّة [see خُبْزَةٌ below] or in an oven.

[And يُخْتَبَزُ means it is made into bread: see under فَثٌّ.]

In the same way تَمَرَهُمْ means he fed them with تَمْر.

Lh quotes a saying of some of the Arabs, أَتَيْتُ بَنِى فُلَانٍ فَخَبَزُوا وَحَاسُوا وَأَقَطُوا, meaning [I came to the sons of such a one, and] they fed me with خُبْز and حَيْس and أَقِط; he does not say خَبَزُونِى وَحَاسُونِى وَأَقَطُونِى.

A word of well-known meaning: [Bread;] that which is eaten.

Said in a proverb. Its origin was this: a company of men asked hospitality of a certain man; when they sat down, he threw down a [piece of leather such as is called] نِطْع, put a mill-stone on it, adjusted its pivot, and covered it [with the upper stone]. The presence of his apparatus made the company wonder. Then he took the handle of the mill, and began to turn it, at which they said to him, What are you doing? — and he answered in the words of this proverb.

Now with him there came into the prison two young men. Said one of them: "I see myself (in a dream) pressing wine." said the other: "I see myself (in a dream) carrying bread on my head, and birds are eating, thereof." "Tell us" (they said) "The truth and meaning thereof: for we see thou art one that doth good (to all)."
