Core sense — time; a space or period of time; a season; an appointed termgenerated
1such a one does so at times, or sometimes—فُلَانٌ يَفْعَلُ كَذَا أَحْيَانًا
The same as دَهْرٌ [time; a time; a space, or period, of time; etc.]: or, according to Esh-Sháfiʿee, time from the beginning of the world to its end, and so also دَهْرٌ (Az, under the word دَهْرٌ).
Or a time in a vague sense, applying to any time, little or much, long or short, which may be a year and more; or, in some cases, particularly forty years; or seven years; or two years; or six months; or two months; or any morning and evening.
Also a space of time, as in the Qur'an 76:1 and 37:178; and a continuous time; and the day of resurrection, or the coming to pass of the resurrection, as in the last verse of chapter 38.
Or it has two meanings: a time of unknown limit, and also, as in the Qur'an 14:30, six months.
Er-Rāghib: the time of a thing's arriving, or coming, and happening; it has a vague meaning, and is made specific by the word to which it is prefixed.
Some say that it is used in different ways: of an appointed term, such as that to which God makes one live; of a year, as in the Qur'an 14:30; of the time when an event takes place, as in the Qur'an 30:16; and of time absolutely.
According to El-Munáwee, in the genuine language of the Arabs it is applied to the time of a glance of the eye, and to more than that, up to time without end.
The plural is أَحْيَانٌ, and the plural of that plural is أَحَايِينُ.
such a one does so at times, or sometimes—فِى الأَحَايِينِ
In the Qur'an 14:30, تُؤْتِى أُكُلَهَا كُلَّ حِينٍ means [which yields its fruit] every six months; or every year; or every morning and evening; or, according to Az, in every season, without interruption.
the time, or season, of a thing—مِحْيَانُ شَىْءٍ
That is, حِينُهُ.
for a time, or season—إِلَى حِينٍ
at one time; sometime; for a while—حِينًا
I stood at the time when you stood—قُمْتُ حِينَ قُمْتَ
Here حِينَ is an adverbial noun of time. [See also an example in a verse cited under خَشَفَ and the remarks added there.]
In its place one may well use لَمَّا, إِذَا, إِذْ, مَتَى, سَاعَةَ, and وَقْتَ, and the like; but not حَيْثُ, as many have said, for that is an adverbial noun of place.

Qur’ān 37:178 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
وَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍSo turn thou away from them for a little while,Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.1at that time; then—حِينَئِذٍ
When the time of speaking and the time spoken of are made distant from each other, this is done by means of إذ.
Sometimes the ء is suppressed and ى is put in its place.
1.2it is not, or was not, a time of such a thing—لَا تَحِينَ
Sometimes تَ is prefixed to حِينَ.
This is generally written لَاتَ حِينَ, as in the Qur'an 38:2 [on which see the article ليت].
Aboo-Wejzeh Es-Saadee says: [the persons who return to the attack when there is none other that returns to the attack, as is said in the article عطف; or it may mean who act affectionately at the time when there is none other that acts affectionately; and the feeders at the time when it is said, Where is the feeder?]
shāhid 1اَلْعَاطِفُونَ تَحِينَ مَا مِنْ عَاطِفٍوَالمُطْعِمُونَ زَمَانَ أَيْنَ المُطْعِوُ
ISd: ت is thus prefixed to حين, as it is in تَلَانَ, meaning الآنَ.
IB: Ibn-Es-Seeráfee cites the first hemistich thus, with the ه of pausation:
shāhid 2اَلْعَاطِفُونَهْ حِينَ مَامِنْ عَاطِفٍ
Some say that the ه of pausation is likened to the feminine ة and is then given the vowel fet-h. [See more in the article ليت.]

i. q. دَهْرٌ [Time; or a time; or a space, or period, of time; &c.]: (K:) or, accord. to EshSháfi'ee, time, from the beginning of the world to its end; as also دَهْرٌ : (Az voce دَهْرٌ :) or a time, (Az, S, Mgh, Msb, K,) in a vague sense, (Mgh, K,) applicable to any time, (Az, K,) little or much, (Mgh, Msb,) long or short, that may be a year and more: or [in some cases] particularly meaning forty years: or seven years: or two years: or six months: or two months: or any morning and evening: (K:) also a space of time; (S, K;) as in the Kur lxxvi. I, (S,) and in the Kur xxxvii. 178: (K:) and a continuous time: (Ham p. 381:) and the day of resurrection; (K;) or the coming to pass of the resurrection; as in the Kur xxxviii. last verse: (Mgh, TA:) or it has two meanings; namely, a time of unknown limit, and also, as in the Kur xiv. 30, six months: (Fr, Msb:) accord. to Er-Rághib, the time of a thing's arriving, or coming, and happening; having a vague meaning, and rendered particular, or special, by that to which it is prefixed: some say that it occurs applied in different ways: to an appointed term; as that to which God makes one to live: and a year; as in the Kur xiv. 30: and to the time when an event takes place; as in the Kur xxx. 16: and to time absolutely: accord. to El-Munáwee, in the [genuine] language of the Arabs, it is applied to [the time of] a glance of the eye, and more than that, to time without end: (TA:) the pl. is أَحْيَانٌ , (S, Msb, K,) and pl. pl. أَحَايِينُ ; (S, * K;) as in the saying, فُلَانٌ يَفْعَلُ كَذَا أَحْيَانًا and فِى الأَحَايِينِ [Such a one does so at times, or sometimes]. (S.) In the Kur [xiv. 30], تُؤْتِى , أُكُلَهَا كُلَّ حِينٍ means [Which yieldeth its fruit] every six months: (Fr, Msb, TA:) or every year: or every morning and evening: or, accord. to Az, in every season, uninterruptedly. (TA.) مِحْيَانُ شَىْءٍ , also, means حِينُهُ [The time, or season, of a thing]. (K.) [You say, إِلَى حِينٍ For a time, or season.] And حِينًا At one time; sometime; at some time; awhile. (Mgh.) حِينَ in the phrase قُمْتُ حِينَ قُمْتَ [I stood in the time when thou stoodest, or I stood when thou stoodest,] is an adv. n. of time; (Msb;) [see also an ex. in a verse cited voce خَشَفَ , and the remarks there subjoined:] and one may well employ in its place لَمَّا and إِذَا (Msb, TA) and إِذْ and مَتَى and سَاعَةَ (TA) and وَقْتَ (Msb, TA) and the like; but not, as many have said, حَيْثُ ; for this is an adv. n. of place. (Msb.) When they make the two times to be distant, the one from the other, [i. e. the time of speaking and the time spoken of,] they do so by means of إذ , and thus, (K,) they say حِينَئِذٍ [meaning At that time; then]: (S, K:) and sometimes they suppress the ء , substituting for it ى . (TA.) Sometimes, also, they prefix تَ to حِينَ ; (S, TA;) and say لَا تَحِينَ , meaning It is not, or was not, a time [of such a thing; but this is generally written لَاتَ حِينَ ]; as in the Kur xxxviii. 2 [respecting which see art. ليت ]. (TA.) Aboo-Wejzeh Es-Saadee says, 1 [The persons who return to the attack when there is none other that returns to the attack, (as is said in the S and L in art. عطف ,) or it may mean who act affectionately in the time when there is none other that acts affectionately; as is said in the L in that art.;) and the feeders in the time when it is said, Where is the feeder?]: (S:) ISd says that ت is thus prefixed to حين like as it is in تَلَانَ meaning الآنَ : but IB says that Ibn-Es-Seeráfee cites the former hemistich thus: 2 [with the ه of pausation]: and some say that the ه of pausation is likened to the fem. ة , and is then made movent with fet-h.
