maṣdarحَيْقٌmuḍāriʿيَحِيقُ يَحُوقُ
Core sense — it beset him, it encompassed him; it clave to him, it befell himgenerated
1.1[And evil artifice shall not beset any save its authors]—وَلَا يَحِيقُ المَكْرُ السَّيِّئُ إِلَّا بِأَهْلِهِ
It surrounded, encompassed, or beset him or it; used only of evil.; maṣdar حَيْقٌ, حُيُوقٌ, and حَيَقَانٌ. [Also حاق به, maṣdar حَوْقٌ], and so is احاق به. Ibn-'Abbād.
it clave to him, and became his due, and befell him—حاق به
So in the Qur'ān 35:41. Or the meaning is: shall not befall.
Ibn-'Arafeh; muḍāriʿ as above, maṣdar حَيْقٌ and حَاقٌ.
[And that at which they used to mock shall cleave to them, or be their due, or befall them; namely, the punishment at which they mocked.]—وَحَاقَ بِهِمْ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ
punishment beset them, and befell them—حاق بِهِمُ العَذَابُ
trial, or trouble, beset him—حاق بِهِ البَلَآءُ
Ibn-'Arafeh: this is how it is said to be meant in the Qur'ān 11:11 and elsewhere.
Mentioned in the article on حق.
