maṣdar حُيُودٌ, حَيْدَةٌ, حَيْدٌ, حَيَدَانٌ, مَحِيدٌ, and حَيْدُودَةٌ.

The last is originally حَيَدُودَةٌ, with the ى having a vowel; the letter was afterwards made sākin, since there is no word in the language of the measure فَعْلُولٌ except صَعْفُوقٌ. [See the remarks on شَيْخُوخَةٌ under شَاخَ.]

the beast shied and quitted the middle of the road—حَادَتِ الدَّابَّةُ

on this sense He declined, or turned aside or away, from it; he removed, went away, or went far away from it — said of a road, or of a thing; he shunned, or avoided, it, out of fear or disdain. [See also 3.]

And the stupor of death will bring Truth (before his eyes): "This was the thing which thou wast trying to escape!"

حَيِّدٌ is the other reading: each of the two occurs in a verse of [Umeiyeh the son of] Aboo-'Áïdh El-Hudhalee, according to different readings of it. [See جَمَّازٌ.]

Or: an ass that often turns aside from things, or shies at them.

حَيَدَى is also used as an adjective for a she-ass.

It is [said to be] the only masculine adjective of the measure فَعَلَى, except دَلَظَى, a man "who thrusts violently", and وَقَرَى [but this is written in the K وَقَرِىٌّ], "a pastor of a وَقِير, or flock of sheep", and قَفَطَى, and جَمَزَى, a "quick" ass.

But probably حَيِّدٌ is the only correct one of the two words mentioned above.
