maṣdarحَيَوَانٌ حَيَاةٌ حَيَآءٌmuḍāriʿيَحْيَا

Core sense — he, or it, lived, was alive; the fire burned; the road became distinctgenerated

1.1he, or it, lived; he was, or became, in the state called حَيَاةٌ, explained belowحَىَّ

This latter form is the more common [like مَلَّ, originally مَلِلَ].

Dual حَيِيَا and حَيَّا; plural حَيُوا, like خَشُوا and حَيُّوا, as some say.

Muḍāriʿ يَحْيَا and يَحَىُّ [like يَمَلُّ, originally يَمْلَلُ], the second occurring in poetry, but improper, and disallowed by the Basrees.

or حَيَآءٌ and حِىٌّ and حَيَوَانٌ; the last has an intensive meaning, like its opposite مَوَتَانٌ.

[The suggests that حَيِىَ may originally be حَيِوَ, but I find no authority for this; and if it is so, this verb is the only instance of a root whose middle radical letter is ى and final و.]

1.1.1figurative · مجاز — inferredthey were, or became, in good conditionحَيُوا

Said of a people, or company of men: or they were, or became, fat, having the means of subsistence, بَعْدَ هُزَالٍ [after leanness].

7:25
قَالَ فِيهَا تَحْيَوْنَ وَفِيهَا تَمُوتُونَ وَمِنْهَا تُخْرَجُونَ

He said: "Therein shall ye live, and therein shall ye die; but from it shall ye be taken out (at last)."

20:74
إِنَّهُۥ مَن يَأْتِ رَبَّهُۥ مُجْرِمًا فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ جَهَنَّمَ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحْيَىٰ

Verily he who comes to his Lord as a sinner (at Judgment),- for him is Hell: therein shall he neither die nor live.

23:37
إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنْيَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحْيَا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَبْعُوثِينَ

"There is nothing but our life in this world! We shall die and we live! But we shall never be raised up again!

45:24
وَقَالُوا۟ مَا هِىَ إِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنْيَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحْيَا وَمَا يُهْلِكُنَآ إِلَّا ٱلدَّهْرُ ۚ وَمَا لَهُم بِذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَظُنُّونَ

And they say: "What is there but our life in this world? We shall die and we live, and nothing but time can destroy us." But of that they have no knowledge: they merely conjecture:

87:13
ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحْيَىٰ

In which they will then neither die nor live.

And they hold secret counsels among themselves for iniquity and hostility, and disobedience to the Messenger. maṣdarحَيَآءٌmuḍāriʿيَحْيَا

Core sense — he spared him, he let him live; he was ashamed, he shrank from itgenerated

10.1

He spared him; he let him live, or left him alive; he did not slay him. In this sense the verb has but one form.

Or: he left him, let him alone, or forbore from him.

10.1.1God will not spare to propound, or refrain from propounding, a parable, or as a parableإِنَّ ٱللّٰهَ لَا يَسْتَحْيِى أَنْ يَضْرِبَ مَثَلًا

From the Qur'ān 2:24; some say it is from this sense. It means لَا يَسْتَبْقِى.

[God] forbears from punishing [the grey-haired Muslim]إِنَّ ٱللّٰهَ يَسْتَحْيِى مِنْ ذِى الشَّيْبَةِ المُسْلِمِ أَنْ يُعَذِّبَهُ

Er-Rāghib gives this explanation.

10.1.2he felt, or was moved with, shame, shyness, or bashfulness; his soul shrank from foul thingsاِسْتَحْيَى

[It is also written اِسْتَحْيَا, which is the more proper way of writing it. The shame meant is particularly, but not always, honest shame, pudency, or modesty; and so also اِسْتَحَى and حَيِىَ.]

استحيى is of the dialect of El-Ḥijáz; استحى, with a single ى, is of the dialect of Temeem; the former is the original, and is the form used in the Qur'ān.

In the latter, the first ى [of the original] is dropped, [and its vowel is moved to the ح] to make the pronunciation easier, because of the meeting of the two ى s. This is Sb's opinion, and Aboo-'Othmán [El-Mázinee] agrees with it.

The opinion ascribed to Sb in the S, that اِسْتَحَيْتُ is changed from اِسْتَحْيَيْتُ in the same way as اِسْتَبَعْتُ is changed from اِسْتَبٌيَعْتُ, is Kh's, and El-Mázinee does not allow it.

Or استحيا منه and استحى منه and استحياهُ and استحاهُ, which the CK has in the place of استحياهُ.

Also حَيِىَ منه.

he disdained, or scorned, such a thing; he refused it out of disdain and pride; he shunned itاستحيى مِنْ كَذَا

Nounحَىَّ2 senses · 1 main

Core sense — come; come quickly; hastengenerated

1come to prayer; come quickly to prayer; hasten to prayerحَىَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاهٌ

A verbal noun, and so followed immediately by عَلَى, used as an imperative addressed to a single person, male or female, and to more than one; used in calling, summoning, inviting, and urging. It means: come; or come quickly; or hasten.

No verb is derived from it alone, for حَيْعَلَ is derived from حَىَّ and عَلَى together.

Found in the أَذَان.

And حَىَّ عَلَى الفَلَاحْ [in the same: see the article فلح].

[Come to the morning meal]حَىَّ عَلَى الغَدَآءِ
[Come to the evening meal]على العَشَآءِ
[Come to the crumbled bread moistened with broth]على الثَّرِيدِ
[Come to good, good fortune, prosperity, and the like]على الخَيْرِ

on this sense The saying of Ibn-Aḥmar [for the riders upon the camels have gone]

shāhid
حَىَّ الحُمُولَ فَإِنَّ الرَّكْبَ قَدْ ذَهَبَا

means: keep to the loads.

1.1come to prayerحَىَّ هَلَ الصَّلَاةَ

In the phrase حَىَّ هَلَ and حَىَّ هَلًا, followed by عَلَى كَذَا and إِلَى كَذَا and حَىَّ هَلَا — this last used when pausing, but bad in other cases.

Also حَىَّ هَلْ and حَيَّهْل [so in the copies of the K], with the ه sākin, and حىّ هلن [apparently حَىَّ هَلَنْ for حَىَّ هَلًا, or perhaps a mistranscription for حَىَّ هَلَكَ].

[The most common rendering of حَىَّ هَلَ and the like is like that of حَىَّ alone, namely: come.]

Or حىّ means hasten, and [هل or] هلا means come to it, or reach it; so that the meaning is: hasten; come to such a thing.

Or حىّ means come, and [هل or] هلا means quickly, or be quick; so that the meaning is: come quickly to such a thing.

Or [هل or] هلا means be quiet, and the meaning is أَسْرِعْ عِنْدَ ذِكْرِهِ وَٱسْكُنْ حَتَّى يَنْقَضِىَ [Speed at the mention of it, and be quiet until it is finished].

hasten with such a one; or keep to such a one, and call himحَىَّ هَلْ بِفُلَانٍ

According to Abu-l-Khattáb, the Arabs used to say this.

One says also حَىَّ هَلًا بفلان (IAar, and so in manuscript copies of the K) and حَىَّ هَلَ بفلان.

[When the good, or righteous, are mentioned, then] keep to 'Omar, and call 'Omarإِذَا ذُكِرَ الصَّالِحُونَ فِحَىَّ هَلَ بِعُمَرَ

Said in a tradition; or فَحَيَّهَلًا بِعُمَرَ: and begin with him, and be quick in mentioning him; for he is of those.

According to some of the grammarians, when you say حَىَّ هَلًا with tanwīn it is as though you said حَثًّا, and without tanwīn as though you said الحَثَّ, the tanwīn being made a sign of indefiniteness and its omission a sign of definiteness; and so it is in all compounds of this kind. Core sense — a serpent; the constellation Draco; a winding brand-mark on a camelgenerated

1figurative · مجاز — inferred[He is none other than a serpent]مَا هُوَ إِلَّا حَيَّةٌ

[A serpent;] a thing well known. [It is improperly explained in the Msb as the same as أَفْعًى.]

Applied to the male and the female, the ة being added to denote one of a kind, as in بَطَّةٌ and دَجَاجَةٌ [although حَىٌّ is not used as a collective generic noun]; and the saying رَأَيْتُ حَيًّا عَلَى حَيَّةٍ, meaning [I saw] a male upon a female, is related as having been heard from the Arabs.

But حَيُّوتٌ is also applied to the male, the ت being augmentative, for the word is originally حَيُّو [or حَيُّوٌّ].

It is said that it does not die except by an accident; and of a long-lived man they say this, and likewise of a woman.

As though it were called حيّة because of its long life. Some, including Sb, say that it is derived from حَيَاةٌ, since the relative noun is حَيَوِىٌّ, not حَوَوِىٌّ.

To one who objects that one says رَجُلٌ حَوَّآءٌ [meaning “a man who collects serpents”], it is answered that حَيَّةٌ and حَوَّآءٌ are of different roots, like لُؤْلُؤٌ and لَأّلٌ and the like.

But it may be from تَحَوَّى, because of its winding, or coiling, itself; and some say it is originally حَوْيَةٌ, some that it is originally حَيْوَةٌ. [The diminutive is حُيَيَّةٌ.] The plural is حَيَّاتٌ and حَيْوَاتٌ, or حَيَوَاتٌ — so in some copies of the K, agreeing with the dialect of Hudheyl.

[He is more sharp-sighted than a serpent]هُوَ أَبْصَرُ مِنْ حَيَّةٍ

The two stars in the foot and before the foot of the foremost of Gemini; or three stars over against الهَنْعَة [which is the Sixth Mansion of the Moon].

Sometimes the moon leaves الهنعة and makes its abode in التحايى; they lie between the Milky Way and the stars that follow العَيُّوق [or Capella].

Aboo-Ziyád El-Kilábee used to say that this name means الهنعة, and that it is also pronounced التَّحَائِى, with ء; but AHn says that the moon makes its abode in these stars, and not in الهنعة itself.

Its singular is تِحْيَاةٌ; if so, of the measure تِفْعَلَةٌ, like تِحْلَبَةٌ, not فِعْلَاةٌ, like عِزْهَاةٌ, because there is no such root as تَحى; derived from الحَيَا, because its نَوْء [here meaning its setting at dawn, in midwinter] is attended with much rain.

But التحائى, with ء, is irregular, as though it were a plural of تَحِيَّةٌ likened to a word of the measure فَعِيلَةٌ.

Maṣdar of Form 2.

1.1

Also a salutation, or greeting, said by one person to another when they meet; particularly the saying سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكَ and the like.

Its fullest form, used by the believer [to his fellow-believer], is the saying السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ; and so it is pluralized, the plural being تَحِيَّاتٌ and تَحَايَا.

1.2figurative · مجاز[such a one has attained the kingship]فُلَانٌ نَالَ التَّحِيَّةَ

inf. n. of 2. (Mgh, Msb, K.) Also A salutation, or greeting, (A'Obeyd, AHeyth, Mgh, Msb,) pronounced by one person to another on their meeting; (AHeyth;) particularly the saying سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكَ ; (Mgh, * Msb;) and the like; (Mgh;) the most comprehensive form thereof, used by the believer [to his fellow-believer], being the saying السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ : (AHeyth:) hence it is pluralized; the pl. being تَحِيَّاتٌ and تَحَايَا . (Mgh.) Also Continuance, or endurance; or endless, or everlasting, existence: (IAar, Msb, K, &c.:) and so it is said to mean in the following verse of Zuheyr Ibn-Jenáb ElKelbee; who was a [kind of] king among his people: 1 [And indeed everything that the young man has attained, I have attained it, except endless existence]: or, as some say, it here means security from death and from evils. (TA. [But more probably the meaning is that next following: for in the Mz, 49th نوع , where this verse is cited, but with مِنْ كُلِّ in the place of وَلَكُلُّ , he is said to have been (not a king, but,) “ a nobleman. ” See also, respecting him, p. x. of my Preface.]) And Dominion, or kingship: (Fr, AA, S, Mgh, Msb, K, &c.:) because the people of the Time of Ignorance used to greet kings [or rather those of Himyer] by the saying أَبَيْتَ الَّعْنَ , which they addressed to none other than a king; so that when any one of them became a king, it was said of him, فُلَانٌ نَالَ التَّحِيَّةَ [meaning Such a one has attained the kingship]. (Mgh: in which, and in the S, the foregoing verse is cited as an ex. of this last meaning.) التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلّٰهِ means Endless existence belongs to God: (Lth, Msb, TA:) or dominion, or kingship: (Lth, Yaakoob, S, Msb, TA:) or freedom, or security, from all evils, (Khálid Ibn-Yezeed, AHeyth,) and from all causes of the cessation of existence: (AHeyth:) or endless existence, and security from evils, and dominion, and the like: (Fr:) or the expressions [of praise] that indicate and imply the ascription of dominion and endless existence: (Kt:) or salutations and benedictions are Gods, and at his disposal. (Mgh.) [ التَّحِيَّاتُ is also a term applied to the following form of words repeated in the ordinary prayers: التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلّٰهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَاأَيُّهَا النَّبِىُّ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ ٱللّٰهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَاهَ إِلَّا ٱللّٰهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ , or (instead of عبده ورسوله ) رَسُولُ ٱللّٰهِ : see 5 in art. شهد .] قَدْ نِلْتُهُ إِلَّا التَّحِيَّهْ | وَلَكُلُّ مَا نَالَ الفَتَى The assigning to this word, as used in the Kur iv. 88, the meaning of A gift is a mistake. (Mgh.) See also التَّحَايِى .
