maṣdarحَوْطٌmuḍāriʿيَحُوطُ
Core sense — he guarded him, protected him, took care of him, defended himgenerated
1.1
see 4, in three places.
1.1.1figurative · مجازhe guarded him, kept him safely, protected him, or took care of him—حَاطَهُ
Muḍāriʿ as above; maṣdar حَوْطٌ, حِيطَةٌ and حِيَاطَةٌ. [The second and third are given in the CK, wrongly, with fetḥ to the ح; the first is expressly said in the S and TA, and the second also in the TA, to be with kesr, and both are shown in the S to be originally with و, that is, حِوْطَةٌ and حِوَاطَةٌ.]
حِيَاطٌ is used in poetry for the last of these.
he guarded him, protected him, or took care of him—حوّطهُ
Maṣdar تَحْوِيطٌ and تحوّطهُ; omitted in the CK.
may you never cease to be in God's protection—لَا زِلْتَ فِى حِيَاطَةِ ٱللّٰهِ
such a one has compassion and affection for you—مَعَ فُلَانٍ حِيطَةٌ لَكَ
Both also mean: he defended him; he paid frequent attention to him; he minded the things that were for his good.
You should not say عَلَيْكَ.
[I guard, or defend, my honour, or reputation]—أَحُوطُ عِرْضِى
he takes care of his brother and manages his affairs—هُوَ يَتَحَوَّطُ أَخَاهُ
he fought in their defence—حَاطَهُمْ قَصَآءَهُمْ
he fought in their defence—بِقَصَائِهِمْ
he guarded you, or defended you, in a distant quarter—حَاطَكَ الفَضَآءَ
[But this is generally meant ironically.]
[So in the TA; apparently a mistranscription for القَصَآءَ or القَصَا, with which, however, it is nearly synonymous.]
Said when an affliction befalls you and your brother does not guard or defend you and does not aid you. It is said ironically: he did not guard or defend you at all, for one who guards his brother draws near to him and supports him.

they retired to a distance from us, though they were around us—حَاطُونَا القَصَآءَ
Both forms are said to be correct in the TA in art. قصو, on the authority of Ibn-Wellád.
In some copies of the K with ف and ض, and in some with ف and ض, the latter unpointed, and so in [a copy of] the A.
they retired to a distance from us, though they were around us—القَصَا
retire to a distance from me—حُطْنِى القَصَا
We were not distant from them, had they wished to come to us.
Ibn-Wellád, and the K in art. قصو.
retire to a distance from me—القَصَآءَ
I will certainly leave you and not go near you—لَأَحُوطَنَّكَ القَصَا وَلَأَغْزُوَنَّكَ بِالعَصَا
Ibn-Wellád, and the TA in that art.
In each case with the short ا. [And I will certainly go against you to fight you with the staff.] Ks, TA in art. قصو.
take care of the tie of kinship and preserve it—حُطْ حُطْ
It also means: deck the boys with the حَوْط [as a protection from the evil eye].
[In the CK الصَّبِيَّة, the girl.]
deck your boy with the حَوْط—حُوطُوا غُلَامَكُمْ
1.1.2the [wild] he-ass gathered together and guarded his عَانَة—حَاطَ الحِمَارُ عَانَتَهُ
Muḍāriʿ as above.
This word apparently means his herd of wild asses; or the phrase may mean that the he-ass drew towards himself, or pressed together, and guarded, his she-ass. Freytag and Golius each give a different rendering of عانة.
