In the Kur 8:20. Or: he has gained the mastery over their hearts; or he has gained the mastery over them and inclined them to what he desired of them; or he drove them, having gained the mastery over them.

In the Kur 4:140. Aboo-Ishák: or did we not gain the mastery over you by befriending and aiding you? Or: did we not overcome you, and have it in our power to kill you?

AZ says that in all verbs coordinate to استحوذ the original letters of the root may be kept: the Arabs say اِسْتَصَابَ and اِسْتَصْوَبَ and اِسْتَجَابَ and اِسْتَجْوَبَ, and their doing so agrees with a rule they follow constantly.

The grammarians say that whoever says حَاذَ, says only استحاذ; and whoever says أَحْوَذَ says likewise استحوذ.

But the first word there is انفع, which I regard as a mistranscription.
