Nounحُوبٌ6 senses · 3 main

Core sense — a sin, or crime; destruction; disease; a trial, or troublegenerated

1sin, or crime; a sin, or a crimeحَوْبٌ

This and the headword are said by some to be two dialectal variants (see form 1, first sentence); حَابٌ and حَوْبَةٌ and حُوبَةٌ and حَابَةٌ and حِيبَةٌ have the same meaning.

A ʿObeyd: the first and second mean any sin or crime, [as also, apparently, حَابٌ,] while حوبة [that is, حَوْبَةٌ and حُوبَةٌ, the former particularly mentioned, and apparently حَابَةٌ as well] means a single sin or crime.

Fr: حُوبٌ means great sin, or a great sin.

Katādeh: wrong, injustice, or tyranny; so in the Qurʾān 4:2, where El-Ḥasan read حَوْبًا instead of حُوبًا.

[O my Lord, accept my repentance, and wash away] my sin, or crimeوَٱغْسِلْ حَوْبَتِى رَبِّ تَقَبَّلْ تَوْبَتِى

Reported by A ʿObeyd.

on this sense El-Mukhabbal Es-Saʿdee says: [Then do not ever bring into your grave a sin with which a reckoner, or taker of vengeance, may one day rise up against you]
