Core sense — fortune, good fortune; a share, portion, or lotgenerated
1
Fortune, or particularly good fortune; syn. جَدٌّ and بَخْتٌ. Also a share, portion, or lot; or particularly a share, portion, or lot, of something good or excellent.
Some of the people of Ḥims say حَنْزٌ, but when they form a plural they go back to the original, saying حُظُوظٌ; and they regard the ن as a nasal sound, not as a radical letter.
They do the same with every word having a doubled letter, such as رُزٌّ and أُتْرُجٌّ, saying رٌنْزٌ and أُتْرُنْجٌ.
The plural of paucity is أَحُظٌّ, and of multitude حُظُوظٌ and حُظُوظَةٌ (Ibn-'Abbād) and حِظَاظٌ and حُظٌّ and أَحَاظٍ [in the CK, wrongly, أَحَاظٌ], irregularly, as though it were the plural of أَحْظٍ; or it is regularly formed from أَحْظٍ, which is itself irregular, being originally أَحْظُظٌ, the original form of the plural of paucity mentioned above.
Another plural is حِظَآءٌ (in several copies of the K حِظَّآءٌ, which is one of the forms of ism jamʿ), also irregular, formed [from حِظَاظٌ] by a change of the second ظ [into ى and then into ء].

وَمَا يُلَقَّىٰهَآ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا۟ وَمَا يُلَقَّىٰهَآ إِلَّا ذُو حَظٍّ عَظِيمٍAnd no one will be granted such goodness except those who exercise patience and self-restraint,- none but persons of the greatest good fortune.
