Form 1حَضَرَ13 senses · 3 main
muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarحُضُورٌ حِضَارَةٌ

Core sense — he was, or became, present; he attended him; he dwelt in a settled regiongenerated

1.1he was, or became, presentحَضِرَ

.

This second past form has the same muḍāriʿ, not حَضَرَ as the K implies. Some disallow the form; it, with its muḍāriʿ, is an instance of mixed dialects, like فَضِلَ, and نَعِمَ, which IKoot says are the only instances of the kind.

Maṣdar حُضُورٌ, حَضَارَ, احتضر, and تحضّر.

The opposite of غَابَ, he came after having been absent.

1.1.1figurative · مجازthe time of prayer came, or arrivedحَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ

The people of El-Medeeneh say حَضِرَت, but all say تَحْضُرُ, originally حَضَرَ وَقْتُ الصَّلَاةِ.

1.1.2figurative · مجاز — inferredhe, or it, was, or became, ready, or preparedحَضَرَ

See Form 4, and see also حاضِرٌ.

1.2he was present with him; he attended him; he came into his presenceحَضَرَهُ

Also حَضِرَهُ, with muḍāriʿ and maṣdars as above, and احتضرهُ and تحضّره.

a woman came into the presence of the judgeحَضَرَتِ القَاضِىَ ٱمْرَأَةٌ

Also: he was present at it, or in it, said of a place.

Also حَضِرَت and حَضِرَ, in which the ت is dropped because القاضى comes between the verb and امرأة; but the first is the most approved.

I was present at, or attended, the court of the judgeحَضَرْتُ مَجْلِسَ القَاضِى

.

he attended a lectureحَضَرَ دَرْسًا
they stayed, or dwelt, by the watersحَضَرُوا المِيَاهَ

See حَاضِرٌ.

1.2.1I seek Your protection, O my Lord, from their bringing evil upon meأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ

In the Qur'ān 23:100; "their" being the devils'. Or it means: from their being present with me; or from their hovering around me.

Qur’ān 23:98 approximate — somewhere between 23:91 and 23:118 Lane cites “Kur xxiii. 100”
Qur’ān 23:98 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَن يَحْضُرُونِ

"And I seek refuge with Thee O my Lord! lest they should come near me."Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

1.2.2figurative · مجاز — inferredthe jinn come to the milk and taint itالجِنُّ تَحْضُرُ اللَّبَنَ

Or تَحْتَضِرُهُ.

1.2.3figurative · مجازhe was visited by the angel of death; he came to the point of deathحُضِرَ

Also اُحْتُضِرَ; both the same as حَضَرَهُ المَوْتُ. Also اِحْتَضَرَهُ المَوْتُ.

Or: he was visited by death, or by the angels of death, meaning he died; or اُحْتُضِرَ means he died a youth.

Mentioned in the article أَجْزَرَ.

1.2.4figurative · مجازwe removed from such a waterحَضَرْنَا عَنْ مَآءِ كَذَا
1.2.5figurative · مجازI was present at the affair, or eventحَضَرْتُ الأَمْرَ

Maṣdar حِضَارَةٌ or حَضَارَةٌ, or both; see بَدَا, the opposite of حَضَرَ, in the article بدو.

Also تحضّر, or this second signifies: he became an inhabitant of such a region.

an inhabitant of the desert who becomes an inhabitant of such a regionبَدَوِىٌّ يَتَحَضَّرُ

And, as its opposite, حَضَرِىٌّ يَتَبَدَّى. See also Form 8.

Said of what passes between people.

he gave the answer, or reply, readilyحاضر الجَوَابَ
3.2.1I sat knee to knee with him, each of us on his knees, disputing before the Sultanحَاضَرْتُهُ

Maṣdar as above. The contending or disputing is جَاثَيْتُهُ.

The meaning is close to that of مُغَالَبَةٌ and مُكَاثَرَةٌ, or مُكَابَرَةٌ, which seems to be the right reading.

3.2.2he disputed, or debated, with him about such a thingحاضرهُ بِكَذَا
3.2.3he contended with him for his right, overcame him, and went off with itحاضرهُ بِحَقِّهِ

Maṣdar as above; and مُجَالَدَةٌ, one of the explanations given to مُحَاضَرَةٌ in the K, is the same as مُحَاضَرَةٌ as the maṣdar of the verb in this sense, unless it is a miscopying for مُجَادَلَةٌ, which I think not unlikely.

3.3I ran with him; I vied with him in runningحَاضَرْتُهُ

The same as عَادَيْتُهُ, from الحُضْرُ.

(TA.) Also حَاضَرْتُهُ , (S, A,) inf. n. as above, (K,) I ran with him: (S, K:) or I vied, or contended, with him in running; syn. عَادَيْتُهُ ; from الحُضْرُ . (A.)

Or perhaps this is a miscopying for يَحْضُرْهُ الذُّبَابُ, meaning: if you do not, the flies will come to it and taint it.

1.1figurative · مجازthe exalted object of resort commands such a thingالحَضْرَةُ العَالِيَةُ تَأْمُرُ بِكَذَا

Also used as a title, by writers of letters and the like, for any great man whom people are accustomed to attend; and sometimes of God, meaning the object of resort.

It is like الجَنَابُ, but is generally taken to imply greater respect. It is often prefixed to the name of the person to whom it is applied, or to a pronoun: حَضْرَةُ فُلَانٍ, the object of resort, such a one; and حَضْرَتُكَ, the object of resort, yourself.

Also the فِنَآء of a رَجُل.

The text has حَضْرَةُ الرَّجُلِ قُرْبُهُ وَفِنَاؤُهُ, but the right reading is clearly الرَّحْلِ, so that the second of the two meanings so explained is: the court, or yard, in front of, or extending from the sides of, a house or dwelling.

2figurative · مجازhe collected the material, the baked bricks and the like, meaning to build a houseجَمَعَ الحَضْرَةَ يُرِيدُ بِنَآءَ دَارٍ

When ye deal with each other, in transactions involving future obligations in a fixed period of time, reduce them to writing Let a scribe write down faithfully as between the parties: let not the scribe refuse to write: as Allah Has taught him, so let him write. Let him who incurs the liability dictate, but let him fear His Lord Allah, and not diminish aught of what he owes. If they party liable is mentally deficient, or weak, or unable Himself to dictate, Let his guardian dictate faithfully, and get two witnesses, out of your own men, and if there are not two men, then a man and two women, such as ye choose, for witnesses, so that if one of them errs, the other can remind her. The witnesses should not refuse when they are called on (For evidence). Disdain not to reduce to writing (your contract) for a future period, whether it be small or big: it is juster in the sight of Allah, More suitable as evidence, and more convenient to prevent doubts among yourselves but if it be a transaction which ye carry out on the spot among yourselves, there is no blame on you if ye reduce it not to writing. But take witness whenever ye make a commercial contract; and let neither scribe nor witness suffer harm. If ye do (such harm), it would be wickedness in you. So fear Allah; For it is Good that teaches you. And Allah is well acquainted with all things. If ye are on a journey, and cannot find a scribe, a pledge with possession (may serve the purpose). And if one of you deposits a thing on trust with another, let the trustee (faithfully) discharge his trust, and let him Fear his Lord conceal not evidence; for whoever conceals it, - his heart is tainted with sin. And Allah knoweth all that ye do.

Ask them concerning the town standing close by the sea. Behold! they transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath. For on the day of their Sabbath their fish did come to them, openly holding up their heads, but on the day they had no Sabbath, they came not: thus did We make a trial of them, for they were given to transgression.

Occurrences of this form in the Qur’ān, not Lane’s choice of verse. They show the word in use; they do not say which sense above applies. Where more occur than are shown, the shortest āyāt are chosen.

Nounمَحْضَرٌ7 senses · 4 main

Core sense — a place where people are present; a place of return to water; a judge's recordgenerated

1

A place where people are present, or assembled. See also حَضْرَةٌ.

1.1

A place to which people return to the waters, or to the constant sources of water; the opposite of مَبْدً ى. So in the article بدو.

A place to which one goes in search of herbage is called مُنْتَجَعٌ, and every such place is called مَبْدً ى, of which the plural is مَبَادٍ.

Watering-places are called مَحَاضِرُ, plural of مَحْضَرٌ, because men gather and are present at them. See also حَاضِرٌ, last meaning.

2

People present, or assembled; an assembly: so in the present day.

2.1

A people dwelling, or staying, by waters. Plural مَحَاضِرُ. See حَاضِرٌ.

3

The record of a qāḍī, or judge, in which his sentence is written, the same as سِجِلٌّ; or what is written when one person brings a charge against another. When the other makes his reply and proves it, the writing is called تَوْفِيقٌ, and when judgment is given, سِجِلٌ.

MF thinks this a recent conventional term, but it has been heard from the Arabs of the classical times, and ISd and others mention it.

3.1

Also a signature written at the end of the record of the signatures of the witnesses, in testimony that what precedes is true. In the CK, وَاقَعَةٍ is wrongly put for وَاقِعَةِ, and خُطُوطُ for خُطُوطِ. But this is a recent conventional use.
