muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُmaṣdarحَضٌّ
Core sense — he excited, incited, or urged himgenerated
1.1he excited, incited, or urged him to do it—عَلَيْهِ
maṣdar حَضٌّ and حُضٌّ, or this last is a simple noun; and حِضِّيضَى, or this too is a simple noun; and حُضِّيضَى, or this too is a simple noun, and the only instance of the measure فُعِّيلَى. Of these last two the former is the more approved. [Both of these, according to some, have an intensive signification.]
Synonymous with حَثَّهُ, or حَمَلَهُ: he roused him to eagerness.
he urged him to do the thing—عَلَى الأَمْرِ
he urged him to do good—عَلَى الخَيْرِ
he urged him to fight—عَلَى القِتَال
Or it is used of pace, of driving, and of anything else.
El-Hareeree says, on the authority of Kh, that حَثَّهُ is used specially of pace, journeying, or marching; in the article on حث.
he excited, incited, or urged him—حضّضهُ
Maṣdar تَحْضِيضٌ: it means the same, or has a stronger meaning; or it is the same as حَرَّضَهُ [which is equivalent to حَثَّهُ with the addition given above], and this is used of fighting.
Or تَحْضِيضٌ means asking, or requiring, with urgency; under أَلَا.
[Nor do they excite one another to feed the poor, or destitute]—وَلَا يَحُضُّونَ عَلَى طَعَامِ المِسْكينِ
[Nor do you excite one another to feed the poor, or destitute]—تَحُضُّونَ
The reading of the people of El-Medeeneh, in the Qur'ān 89:19.
The reading of El-Hasan.
Or the meaning is: nor do they, or you, command to feed the poor. There are other readings; see 3 and 6.
The grammarians apply to the particles هَلَّا, أَلَّا, لَوْلَا and لَوْمَا the term التَّحْضِيضِ حُرُوفُ [Particles of exciting]. When these are followed by a future, they denote exciting to an action and seeking or demanding its performance; when followed by a past tense, reproof for not doing a thing.
