Core sense — good, or goodly, beautiful, comely; also a high hill, or heap, of sandgenerated
1a man very good, or goodly—رَجُلٌ حَسَنٌ بَسَنٌ
Having, or possessing, the quality termed حُسْنٌ: good, or goodly (generally the latter), beautiful, comely, pleasing or pleasant. This may be intrinsic, as when applied to belief in God and in his attributes, or extrinsic, as when applied to war against unbelievers, for this is not good in itself.
It is said to be the only adjective of its measure except بَطَلٌ.
حَسِينٌ means the same, being from حَسُنَ, like عَظِيمٌ and كَريِمٌ from عَظُمَ and كَرُمَ; and حُسَانٌ, but this is an intensive adjective, meaning very good or goodly; and حُسَّانٌ is likewise intensive; and حَاسِنٌ, properly meaning being, or becoming, good or goodly, cited by Lh as used in a future sense; and مُحَسَّنٌ, as applied to a face.
The feminine is حَسَنَةٌ, and حَسْنَآءُ applied to a woman, though the masculine answering to this last, أَحْسَنُ, is said not to be used of a man in the sense of حَسَنٌ. [But the phrase هُوَ أَحْسَنُهُمْ وَجْهًا, meaning حَسَنُهُمْ وَجْهًا, is mentioned under بيض: see بَيَاضٌ, and see also the plural أَحَاسِنُ in what follows.] And حُسَّانَةٌ.
The masculine plural is حِسَانٌ, plural of حَسَنٌ used as an adjective; but when حَسَنٌ is used as a proper name, its plural is حَسَنُونَ. حِسَانٌ may also be plural of حَسِينٌ, and حُسَّانُونَ plural of حُسَّانٌ, which has no broken plural. أَحَاسِنُ القَوْمِ means حِسَانُهُمْ, the good, or goodly, of the party of men.
The feminine plural is حِسَانٌ, like the masculine, plural of حَسْنَآءُ, and the only instance of its kind except عِجَافٌ, plural of عَجْفَآءُ.
بسن is used here as an imitative sequent, for emphasis.
1.1a tradition of good authority—حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ
Generally applied to one transmitted in the first instance by two or more relaters.
1.2
Also meaning good, comely, good-humoured, pleasing discourse or talk.
1.3the bone that is next to the elbow—الحَسَنُ
Also الحُسْنُ. Or the end of the bone of the upper half of the arm next the shoulder-joint, because of the abundance of flesh on it, the end of that bone next the elbow being called القَبِيحُ, as stated under قبح. Or the upper part of that bone, the lower part being called القبيح.
1.4
A kind of tree, of beautiful appearance, also called the أَلآء, that grows in rows on a hill, or heap, of sand; so called because of its beauty. From this the كثيب is called نَقَا الحَسَنِ, as described by Az on the authority of 'Alee Ibn-Hamzeh.
1.5
[And from this, perhaps,] حَسَنٌ also means a high كَثِيب, a hill or heap of sand; and from this it is used as a proper name for a boy.
