muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـِيَفْعِلُ
Core sense — he envied him for a thing, he wished the blessing away from himgenerated
1.1
Muḍāriʿ حَسُدَ and حَسِدَ; the second form is used by some, the first being the one commonly in use.
Maṣdar حَسَدٌ and حَسْدٌ, but the first is more common.
Also حُسُودٌ, حَسَادَةٌ, حَسِيدَةٌ, and حسّدهُ [which probably has an intensive meaning], maṣdar تَحْسِيدٌ.
He envied him for the thing, or envied him the thing — a blessing, or a cause of happiness: he disliked that he should have it, and wished that it might leave him [and pass to himself].
Or he wished, or regarded him with the wish, that the thing might leave him; or he wished that he might be deprived of the thing, or of an excellence. [In the CK, for يُسْلَبَهُمَا is put يَسْلُبَهُمَا.]
Or he wished that the thing — a blessing, a cause of happiness, or an excellence — might pass from him (another) to himself.
1.1.1he wished that he had another's courage and the like, without wishing him deprived of it—حَسَدَهُ عَلَى شَجَاعَتِهِ وَ نَحْوِهَا
Here the verb is synonymous with غَبَطَ and implies admiration.
1.1.2may God punish me for my envy if I envy you—حَسَدَنِى ٱللّٰهُ إِنْ كُنْتُ أَحْسُدُكَ
A saying of the Arabs, mentioned by Lh, strange and abominable.
