1

The state of being forbidden, prohibited, or unlawful; [and of being sacred, or inviolable; sacredness, or inviolability — see حَرُمَ, of which it is a maṣdar;] and the state of being revered, respected, or honoured.

See also مَحْرَمٌ.

1.1reverence, respect, or honourحُرُمَةٌ

The word itself has this meaning too, and so does حُرَمَةٌ; a noun from اِحْتِرَامٌ, like فُرْقَةٌ from اِفْتِرَاقٌ. مَحْرَمٌ means the same, but properly means a place of حُرْمَة.

Plural of the first حُرَمَاتٌ, حُرُمَاتٌ and حُرْمَاتٌ, like غرفات, plural of غُرْفَةٌ.

[reverence is due to him; or is rendered to him]لَهُ حُرْمَةٌ

1.2[the inviolable ordinances and prohibitions of God, or] the ordinances of God and other inviolable thingsحُرُمَاتُ ٱللّٰهِ

Also: a thing that should be sacred, or inviolable; and so مَحْرَمَةٌ, مَحْرُمَةٌ and مَحْرَمٌ — as, for instance, a man's honour, or reputation. A thing which one is obliged to reverence, respect, or honour [and defend]; a thing which one is obliged to be mindful and observant of. [Everything entitled to reverence, respect, honour, or defence in the character and belongings of a person; a thing one is bound to do, or to refrain from, out of reverence, respect, or honour; and any quality that makes its possessor entitled to reverence, respect, or honour.]

The plural of حُرْمَةٌ is حُرُمَاتٌ [and حُرَمَاتٌ and حُرْمَاتٌ, as above,] and حُرَمٌ; that of مَحْرَمٌ [and مَحْرَمَةٌ and مَحْرُمَةٌ] is مَحَارِمُ; and مَحْرَمَاتٌ and مَحْرُمَاتٌ are also plurals of مَحْرَمَةٌ and مَحْرُمَةٌ.

Or what one must perform and may not lawfully neglect; or all God's requirements relating to the rites and ceremonies of the pilgrimage and to other things; or the حَرَم [or sacred territory] and the requirements relating to the pilgrimage; or the requirements relating to the pilgrimage in particular; or the Kaabeh, the sacred mosque, the sacred territory, the sacred month, and the person who is in the state of إِحْرَام; or the inviolability of the sacred territory, of the state of إِحْرَام, and of the sacred month; or Mekkeh, the pilgrimage, the عُمْرَة, and all the acts of disobedience to God that He has forbidden (Mujáhid); or simply the acts of disobedience to God (ʿAtà).

1[do you not know that the face is] forbidden to be beaten?أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ الصُّورَةَ مُحَرَّمَةُ

In a tradition. Or the meaning is that the face has a claim to reverence, respect, or honour.

[Forbidden, prohibited, or made unlawful; and made, or pronounced, sacred, inviolable, or entitled to reverence, respect, or honour.]

1.1the first of the months of the Arab year [since the age of paganism]المُحَرَّمُ

The article ال is prefixed because the word is originally an adjective. According to some, the article is prefixed to the name of no other month; according to others it may be prefixed to صفر and شوّال, and [in the age of paganism, to the seventh month, also called] شَهْرُ ٱللّٰهِ الأَصَبُّ [الاصبّ being apparently a dialectal variant of الأَصَمُّ], that is, رَجَبٌ.

Az says that in the age of paganism the Arabs used to call the month of رَجَب both الأَصَمُّ and المُحَرَّمُ, and he cites the saying of a poet: [We stayed in it during the two months of Rabeeʿa, both of them, and the two months of Jumádà; and they made El-Moharram profane — apparently by postponing it, as the pagan Arabs often did]
