muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarحَرْصٌ حَرَصٌ
Core sense — he rent it; he desired it greedily; he strove to get itgenerated
1.1the beater and washer and whitener rent the garment in beating it—حَرَصَ القَصَّارُ الثَّوْبَ
Muḍāriʿ [حَرِصَ and] حَرُصَ.
He rent it, or split it; and he, or it, stripped off, scraped off, or otherwise removed its surface, peel, or rind. Az: the first, or else the second, of these is the primary meaning.
Or he made holes in it by beating it; or made holes and rents in it that way; or rubbed off its surface that way.
Muḍāriʿ حَرِصَ and حَرُصَ.
the pasture, or herbage, was entirely consumed, nothing of it left—حُرِصَ المَرْعَى
As though the herbage were stripped off from the surface of the land.
1.2he desired it greedily; he hankered after it; he coveted it—حَرَصَ عَلَيْهِ
Muḍāriʿ حَرِصَ and حَرُصَ, the latter mentioned by IKtt and the author of the Iktitáf.
A variant حَرِصَ. [In the K this seems to be indicated by its being said that the past tense is like سَمِعَ, that is, حَرْصٌ.]
he strove, or laboured, exerting himself and taking great pains, to get it—حَرَصَ عَلَيْهِ
This latter form of the verb is bad. MF asserts that El-Kurtubee said the former is of weak authority, which is clearly wrong, since the readers of the Qur'ān generally agree in using it.
Or he desired it excessively, or inordinately; or he desired it culpably; said of worldly good.
Az derives it from the first of the meanings given in this article; Er-Rāghib, and the B, derive it from the second. Az explains that a man who does so may be said, by a figure of speech, to scratch the outer skin off the faces of men by doing it. MF thinks this improbable, and says that most of the lexicologists hold the last meaning to be the primary one, the others being taken from it.
.
he desired greedily; and he strove, exerting himself, to get a thing—احترص
This has the same meaning as حَرَصَ.
[May God not guard him who desires inordinately, or culpably]—لَا حَرَسَ ٱللّٰهُ مَنْ حَرَصَ
Aboo-Dhu-eyb makes حَرَصْتُ transitive by means of بِ in the following verse: [And I had indeed purposed to defend them by repelling aggression from them; but the decree of death came: it was not to be repelled]
shāhidوَلَقَدْ حَرَصْتُ بِأَنْ أُدَافِعَ عَنْهُمُفَإِذَا المَنِيَّةُ أَقْبَلَتْ لَا تُدْفَعُ
— meaning هَمَمْتُ.
1.2.1
[Also he was excessively solicitous, or careful, and fearful, about him; and excessively pitiful, or compassionate, to him. See حِرْصٌ and حَرِيصٌ.]

4:129
Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women, even if it is your ardent desire: But turn not away (from a woman) altogether, so as to leave her (as it were) hanging (in the air). If ye come to a friendly understanding, and practise self-restraint, Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
12:103
وَمَآ أَكْثَرُ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَYet no faith will the greater part of mankind have, however ardently thou dost desire it.
16:37
إِن تَحْرِصْ عَلَىٰ هُدَىٰهُمْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِى مَن يُضِلُّ ۖ وَمَا لَهُم مِّن نَّـٰصِرِينَIf thou art anxious for their guidance, yet Allah guideth not such as He leaves to stray, and there is none to help them.
