Said of a man shooting, or casting a missile weapon or the like.
on this sense He, or it, prevented, hindered, withheld, restrained, debarred, or forbade: this is the primary meaning. He also repelled, or averted, evil, and kept a person from a thing, whether good or evil.

That is, the castigation, or punishment, termed حَدٌّ: he inflicted upon a criminal or offender a punishment that would keep him from returning to his crime and keep others from committing such a crime; he inflicted a flogging upon him.
maṣdar حَدٌّ and حدّدهُ.
Muḍāriʿ and maṣdar as above; also حّددها, maṣdar تَحْدِيدٌ.

With a stone or a file. [And he pointed, or made sharp-pointed, an arrow-head or the like.]

Also حدّد, which is more common, maṣdar تَحْدِيدٌ; and احدّ, the form preferred by Lh, maṣdar إِحْدَادٌ and استحدّ.
Muḍāriʿ حَدُدَ and احدّهُ, or احدّ النَّظَرَ اليه and حدّدهُ; see art. لتأ and elsewhere.
Or حَدَّتْ عَلَى زَوْجِهَا. Also احدّت.
The former is the more common in the language of the Arabs, but the latter is preferred by the early grammarians and is the only form known to As, who rejected the former.
A ʿObeyd: she abstained from wearing ornaments, from perfumes, and from dye for the hands and the like, because she was forbidden such things, or because she forbade them to herself, and she put on the garments of mourning after, or on account of, the death of her husband, for the period called العِدَّة. Or she mourned for her husband, put on the garments of mourning, and abstained from ornaments and from dye for the hands and the like.
The adjectives applied to a woman in this case are حَادٌّ and مُحِدٌّ and مُحِدَّةٌ, but the first always without ة, or both are more chaste without ة.
Said of a sword, of a knife or the like, and of a canine tooth.
maṣdar حِدَّةٌ and احتدّ [and apparently انحدّ, which see].

maṣdar حِدَّةٌ and حَدٌّ. Also احتدّ عَلَيْهِ and حَدَّ عَلَيْهِ, muḍāriʿ as above, maṣdar حَدَدٌ and حدّد.
Sometimes it is not followed by عليه.
Az remarks that this verb was not heard in this sense from the Arabs of classical times.

Those who resist Allah and His Messenger will be humbled to dust, as were those before them: for We have already sent down Clear Signs. And the Unbelievers (will have) a humiliating Penalty,-
Those who resist Allah and His Messenger will be among those most humiliated.
