muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـِيَفْعِلُmaṣdarحَجٌّ حَجُّ حَجْحَجَةٌ

Core sense — he went to a place or person; he performed the pilgrimage to Mekkeh; he overcame in argumentgenerated

1.1the sons of such a one kept going repeatedly to visit such a oneحَجَّ بَنُو فُلَانٍ فُلَانًا

. He went, or took himself, to a person or place, synonymous with قَصَدَ, in an absolute sense; or to an object of reverence, veneration, respect, or honour.

Kh: he went repeatedly, or often, to an object of this kind. Also: he went to, or visited, a person; and he went to a person repeatedly, or often.

1.1.1he performed the pilgrimage to the House [of God, at Mekkeh]حَجَّ الَيْتَ

From this, with the same muḍāriʿ and maṣdar, and also with the maṣdar حِجٌّ, though this last may be a simple noun: by conventional usage, or predominantly, or by restriction of its usage in the law, he went to Mekkeh, or to the Kaabeh, to perform the religious rites and ceremonies of the pilgrimage, or for the purpose of the عُمْرَة; but this last meaning is very rare, the usual meaning being that he performed the pilgrimage to Mekkeh and Mount 'Arafát, with all the rites and ceremonies prescribed at, and between, those two places. Or he went to the House [of God, at Mekkeh] and performed the actions prescribed for that occasion by the law of the Kur-án and the Sunneh. [See حَجٌّ below.]

and, according to El-Hejeree, احتجّهُ. So called because people go to it every year.

they performed the pilgrimage to Mekkehحَجُّوا مَكَّةَ
he did not go to Mekkeh to visit the House of Godمَا حَجَّ وَلٰكِنَّهُ دَجَّ

Aboo-Tálib: or for the performance of the rites and ceremonies of the pilgrimage; but he journeyed for trade. (Aboo-Tálib) [See also art. دج.]

Hence, according to some, the proverb لَجَّ فَحَجَّ, for which see below.

1.1.2such a one came to usحَجَّ عَلَيْنَا فُلَانٌ

Also: he came, or arrived.

1.2

Also, with the muḍāriʿ as above by rule: he shaved [his head; as one does on completing the rites and ceremonies of the pilgrimage: see حَجٌّ below].

1.3he probed a fracture of his head in order to cure itحَجَّهُ

Also: he probed a fracture of the head, or a wound, with a مِحْجَاج or مِيل, in order to cure it. Or he probed a wound to learn its depth. Or he examined a cleft in the head to see whether there was bone or blood in it. Or he dressed and cured a wound in the head reaching to the brain. Or he poured boiled clarified butter on a fracture of the head, where the blood had become mixed with the brain, until the blood appeared, and took it away with a little cotton.

. Or he made a perforation with an iron instrument in the bone of his broken head, the head being broken so that the brain was befouled with blood, and pulled off the skin that had dried up, and then cured it, so that it closed up with new skin. It relates to a wound reaching to the brain.

1.3.1

Also: he cut out and extracted a bone from a wound.

1.4he persisted in dispute and overcame in itلَجَّ فَحَجَّ

Also: he overcame another in, or by, an argument, a plea, an allegation, a proof, an evidence, or a testimony. See 3.

Said as a proverb. Or the meaning is: he persevered until he performed the pilgrimage, not having intended to do so when he set out.

1.5

Also, with the muḍāriʿ حَجِجَ by rule; and حَجْحَجَ: he refrained, forbore, or abstained from a thing, عَنْ شَىْءٍ. [See also the latter verb below.]

Nounحَجُّ2 senses · 1 main

Core sense — the pilgrimage to Mekkeh, with its prescribed rites and ceremoniesgenerated

1[he made a vow to perform five pilgrimages]نَذَرَ خَمْسَ حِجَجٍ

And حِجٌّ: the former is a maṣdar and the latter a simple noun, or the latter is also a maṣdar; both are used as nouns. The pilgrimage to Mekkeh, or to the Kaabeh, to perform the religious rites and ceremonies prescribed for that occasion. Ks makes no difference between these two words.

Some say that the former is used for the religious rites and ceremonies of the pilgrimage because they follow the going to Mekkeh, or because they are completed by shaving [the head], or because people keep going to and fro to perform them.

Az: it means the performance of the religious rites and ceremonies of the pilgrimage of one year. Some say حِجٌّ and حِجَّةٌ; or this last means a single pilgrimage, with the performance of its appointed rites, irregularly, for by rule it should be حَجَّةٌ, which Th says has not been heard from the Arabs.

Ks says that حَجَجْتُ حِجَّةً and رَأَيْتُ رُؤْيَةً are the only departures from the model of فَعَلْتُ فَعْلَةً in the whole language of the Arabs; but El-Athram and others are related to have said: We have not heard حَجَجْتُ حِجَّةً from the Arabs, nor رَأَيْتُ رِئْيَةً, they saying only حَجَجْتُ حَجَّةً. From this it appears that حَجَّةٌ and حِجَّةٌ were both used. The plural of the latter is حِجَجٌ.

[the last month of the Arabian calendar;] the month of the pilgrimageذُو الحِجَّةِ

ذو الحَجَّةِ is said by Kz, 'Iyád and Ibn-Kurkool to be the more common form; according to Fei the opposite is the case, for he says that some pronounce it in that way. So called because the pilgrimage to Mekkeh and its religious rites and ceremonies are performed in it. Plural ذَوَاتُ الحجّهِ; they did not say ذَوُو الحَجّةِ, as the singular would suggest.

[by the pilgrimage which is the ordinance of God, I will not do this or that thing]وَحَجَّةِ ٱللّٰهِ لَا أَفْعَلُ

A form of oath used by the Arabs.

What is commonly called الحَجُّ is sometimes called الحَجُّ الأَكْبَرُ [the greater pilgrimage], العُمْرَةُ being called الحَجَّ الأَصْغَرُ [the minor pilgrimage].

Core sense — the bone surrounding the eye, on which the eyebrow grows; a sidegenerated

1

And حِجَاجٌ: the bone surrounding the eye, on the upper part of which the eyebrow grows; the bone that surrounds the cavity of the eye, on the upper part of which the hair of the eyebrow grows.

It is said in a tradition that a female hyena and her young ones were inside the حجاج of the eye of an Amalekite.

Or the bone above the eye-socket, on which the hair of the eyebrow grows; the bone that projects over the cavity of the eye. Or the upper bone, beneath the eyebrow. It is masculine. Plural of the smaller number أَحِجَّةٌ, and of the larger number حُجُجٌ, irregularly, since by a general rule a singular of this measure does not take this form of plural, the reduplication being disapproved. Also, by poetic license, حَوَاجِجُ, contrary to rule, for حَوَاجُّ.

The expression فِى حَجَا حَاجِبٍ ضَمْرٍ is used by poetic license for فى حَجَاجِ حاجب ضمر.

Core sense — one going to Mekkeh; a pilgrim; one who overcomes in argumentgenerated

1

Ism fāʿil of Form 1: going, or taking himself, to [a person or place].

1.1women who have performed the pilgrimageحَوَاجُّ بَيْتِ ٱللّٰهِ

And hence: a man going to Mekkeh, or to the Kaabeh, to perform the religious rites and ceremonies of the pilgrimage, or for the purpose of the عُمْرَة; [but see 1;] [a pilgrim of Mekkeh, or one who has performed the pilgrimage of Mekkeh: see what follows;] and so حَاجِجٌ, the original form, sometimes used by poetic license.

Plural حُجَّاجٌ and حَجِيجٌ and حُجٌّ; or rather the second of these is an ism jamʿ, a kind of noun which, like the collective generic noun, is often called a plural by the lexicographers, though not so called by the grammarians.

حَاجٌّ is also used as a plural, synonymous with حُجَّاجٌ, as سَامِرٌ is with سُمَّارٌ; it may be considered a generic noun, and is sometimes an ism jamʿ, like جَامِلٌ and بَاقِرٌ; and so is حِجٌّ, meaning a company of pilgrims of Mekkeh, or pilgrims collectively; and likewise حَجٌّ.

The feminine is حَاجَّةٌ, plural حَوَاجُّ.

In this latter case you would say حَوَاجٌّ, were this word not imperfectly declinable; [and likewise حَاجُّ بَيْتِ ٱللّٰهِ and حَاجٌّ بَيْتَ ٱللّٰهِ;] as you say ضَارِبُ زَيْدٍ أَمْسِ and ضَارِبٌ زَيْدًا غَدًا.

[حَاجِّىٌّ, as an ism waḥda of حَاجٌّ, treating the latter as a collective generic noun, like رُومٌ, whose ism waḥda is رُومِىٌّ, is commonly used by the Turks and Persians for a pilgrim of Mekkeh; but I have not found it so used in any classical Arabic work.]
