A maṣdar whose verb is of the class of تَعِبَ [i.e. جَافَ, originally جَوِفَ, like خَافَ, 2nd pers. جِفْتَ].

It is the maṣdar, or source, from which شَىْءٌ أَجْوَفُ comes. [See also 10.]

This is the primary meaning; then it was used of a thing that may be occupied or unoccupied, and so came to have the meaning that follows.

IAar: it means a valley. Or, as some say, the interior of a valley.

The belly, or abdomen, of a man. ISd: the interior of the belly.

Also the part on which the shoulder-blades, the upper arms, the ribs and the two flanks close.

Zj, in his “Khalk el-Insán”: the chest, or thorax; the part of the body separated from the بَطْن [or belly] by the حِجَاب [or diaphragm, or midriff], containing the heart and what belongs to it. Plural as above.

It is one of the words that are not used adverbially except with prepositions.

From a tradition; it means what enters into it, of food and drink.

Some say that الجوف here means the belly and the فَرْج [or vulva] together, which are also called الأَجْوَفَانِ. A 'Obeyd reports that some hold the meaning to be the heart and what it has kept and remembered of the knowledge of God.

So used by the people of El-Ghowr and of El-Yemen; the latter word means governors, or collectors of the poor-rates.

Allah has not made for any man two hearts in his (one) body: nor has He made your wives whom ye divorce by Zihar your mothers: nor has He made your adopted sons your sons. Such is (only) your (manner of) speech by your mouths. But Allah tells (you) the Truth, and He shows the (right) Way.

Here that word means [the interior of the body or head, or], according to IAth, any vital part, such as the belly and the brain.

A 'Obeyd: sometimes it means one that penetrates into the جوف, and also one that passes right through.

It is said to be such as is in the pit between the collarbones, and in the pubes, but not in the neck, the throat, the thigh, or the leg; and not if it reaches the interior of the thigh-bone.

Opposed to جَالِفَةٌ.
