3.1he became his [neighbour]جار

and جُوَارٌ — or this last is a simple noun — and جَوَارٌ (M, and so in some copies of the K instead of جُوَارٌ). Of these forms the second is the most chaste for the verb in the sense that follows, though some disapprove of it and hold the third and the fourth to be more chaste.

He lived in his neighbourhood, or near him; or he lived in a dwelling next to his.

3.1.1he bound himself to him by a covenant to protect himجاورهُ

جُوَارٌ is said to be a quasi-maṣdar, and more chaste than جِوَارٌ for the verb in this sense.

3.1.2he protected himself by a covenant with the sons of such a oneجاور بَنّى فُلَانٍ

Also فِى بنى فلان, with; from مُجَاوَرَةٌ, meaning living near.

3.1.3he shut himself up in a place of worship in religious retreatجاور

the same as اِعْتَكَفَ فِى مَسْجِدٍ [he confined himself in a mosque, or place of worship, for a period of days and nights, or at least for one whole day, fasting from daybreak to sunset and occupying himself in prayer and religious meditation, without any interruption by affairs that distract the mind from devotion and are not pressing].

But جاور بِمَكَّةَ and بِالمَدِينَةِ mean simply he stayed in Mekkeh, and in El-Medeeneh, without necessarily meeting the conditions of اِعْتِكَاف required by the law [though generally for the purpose of study, and likewise in the neighbourhood of the great collegiate mosque called the Azhar, in Cairo, so that the term مُجَاوِرٌ means a student of Mekkeh and the like].

Truly, if the Hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is a disease, and those who stir up sedition in the City, desist not, We shall certainly stir thee up against them: Then will they not be able to stay in it as thy neighbours for any length of time:

Core sense — he protected him, he granted him refuge, he rescued himgenerated

4.1He protects, but none is protected against Himيُجِيرُ وَلَا يُجَارُ عَلَيْهِ

Maṣdar إِجَارَةٌ and جَارَةٌ [or the latter is rather a quasi-maṣdar, like طَاعَةٌ from أَطَاعَهُ]: he protected him; granted him refuge; preserved, saved, rescued, or set him free from wrongful, unjust, injurious, or tyrannical treatment, from punishment, or from what he feared; he aided him, helped him, delivered him from evil. The أَ has a privative effect.

Said of God.

None will protect me against Godقُلْ إِنِّى لَنْ يُجِيرَنِى مِنَ ٱللّٰهِ أَحَدٌ

In the Kur 72:22.

4.1.1he put the household goods into the storeroom, and so kept them from being lostاجار المَتَاعَ

The radical و in this second verb stays unaltered because the verb means the same as تجاوروا, in which the و must keep its original form since the preceding letter is sākin, and to show that the two are synonymous. But اِجْتَارُوا also occurs.

Plural (of multitude) جِيرَانٌ [and جِوَارٌ, a plural that occurs often enough, and is mentioned by Freytag as used by El-Mutanebbee], and (of paucity) جِيرَةٌ and أَجْوَارٌ, like قَاعٌ, plural قِيعَانٌ and قِيعَةٌ and أَقْوَاعٌ, the only similar instance. Feminine with ة.

Remember Satan made their (sinful) acts seem alluring to them, and said: "No one among men can overcome you this day, while I am near to you": But when the two forces came in sight of each other, he turned on his heels, and said: "Lo! I am clear of you; lo! I see what ye see not; Lo! I fear Allah: for Allah is strict in punishment."

A maṣdar used as an adjective, the same as جَائِرٌ: declining, or deviating, from the right course; and acting wrongfully, unjustly, injuriously, or tyrannically.

Plural (of the latter meaning), applied to men, جَوَرَةٌ, in which the و stays unaltered against rule, and جَارَةٌ as in all the copies of the K — though some substitute for it, as a correction, جُوَرَةٌ [found in a copy of the A], which, however, needs consideration — and جَائِرُونَ.

, an inf. n. used as an epithet, (TA,) i. q. جَائِرٌ ; (K, TA;) i. e. Declining, or deviating, from the right course: and acting wrongfully, unjustly, injuriously, or tyrannically: (TA:) pl. [of the latter], applied to men, جَوَرَةٌ , (K,) in which the و remains unaltered contr. to rule, (TA,) and جَارَةٌ , (A, K,) as in all the copies of the K, but some substitute for it, as a correction, جُوَرَةٌ , [found in a copy of the A,] which, however, requires consideration, (TA,) and جَائِرُونَ .
