Core sense — copious, or abundant, raingenerated

1a copious, or an abundant, rainمَطَرٌ جَوْدٌ

Copious, or abundant, rain; also جَائِدٌ. Or rain that thoroughly waters everything; or rain that is not exceeded.

So say some, who observe that the phrase mentioned by Sb, أَخَذْتَنَا بِالجَوْدِوَفَوْقهَا [You have assailed us with a storm of reproach or the like not to be exceeded, and with what is above it], is one of exaggeration and reproach.

It is a maṣdar used as an adjective, and so applies without change to a feminine as to a masculine noun, and to a dual and a plural as to a singular. It is also a plural, or rather an ism jamʿ, of جَائِدٌ, as صَحْبٌ is of صَاحِبٌ.

a cloud yielding a copious, or an abundant, rainسَحَابَةٌ جَوْدٌ
a copious, or an abundant, rain became stirred up for usهَاجَتْ لَنَا سَمَآءٌ جَوْدٌ
two showers of rain, copious, or abundantمَطْرَتَانِ جَوْدَانِ

This is contrary to the usage mentioned above, or is as though جَوْدٌ were an adjective from جَادَ, this being originally جَوْدَ, like ضَخْمٌ from ضَخُمَ, but used as a substantive.

تَجَاوِيدُ, which seems to mean the same as جَوْدٌ used as a plural, occurs in the following verse of Sakhr El-Ghei: [Its dust makes sport with the wind in the morning and evening, or night and day, and so do the violent showers of big drops and the pouring of copious, or abundant, rains]

shāhid
يُلَاعِبُ الرِّيحَ بِالعَصْرَيْنِ قَصْطَلُهُوَالوَابِلُونَ وَتَهْتَانُ التَّجَاوِيدِ

It is a plural having no singular; or it may be one, like تَعَاجِيبُ, تَعَاشِيبُ and تَبَاشِيرُ; or it may be plural of تَجْوَادٌ.

copious showers of rain fell upon him, or itأَصَابَتْهُ تَجَاوِيدُ امَطَرِ

Core sense — liberal, generous; a fleet, swift and excellent horsegenerated

1

Used alike as masculine and feminine: liberal, bountiful, munificent, or generous; or one who forces himself to be generous; or who gives without being asked, to save the receiver the shame of asking.

El-Karmánee: one who gives what is fitting to the one for whom it is fitting.

Or one who gives what is fitting to the one for whom it is fitting, not for a return; so the word is more specific than مُحْسِنٌ.

Plural of paucity, masculine, أَجْوَادٌ; of multitude, جُوْدٌ, as قُذُلٌ is plural of قَذَالٌ, but the و is made sākin because it is an unsound letter; in some copies of the K, جُوُدٌ.

Also أَجَاوِدُ, contrary to analogy, or أَجَاوِيدُ, regular, as plural of أَجْوَادٌ; and جُوَدَآءُ and جُوَدَةٌ (CK; omitted in some copies of the K); or جُوْدَةٌ, or جُوُدَةٌ, written in the latter way in a manuscript copy of the K, with ة added to the proper plural form جُوْدٌ or جُوُدٌ, according to the doctrine of Sb.

جُوْدٌ is used as a feminine plural, and is like نُوْرٌ, plural of نَوَارٌ.

1.1figurative · مجاز — inferredhe came on, or advanced, like a courserأَقْبَلَ جَوَادًا

Also, applied alike to the male and the female: a courser; a fleet, or swift, and excellent horse; a horse swift in running, or excellent in running, or in the motion of his legs; also جَوْدٌ; or one that outstrips others; the same as رَائِعٌ.

Plural جِيَادٌ, which by rule should be جِوَادٌ, like طِوَالٌ, but this last form has not been heard from the Arabs; or جِيَادٌ is plural of جَوْدٌ, or of جَيِّدٌ.

جَوَادٌ has also for its plural أَجْيَادٌ, a plural of paucity and irregular, or this is plural of جَيّدٌ and so, though irregularly, keeps the ى substituted for و; and أَجْوَادٌ, also a plural of paucity but agreeing with rule, or this is plural of جَوْدٌ; and أَجَاوِيدُ is plural of أَجْوَادٌ.

Like a horse called جواد.

, used alike as masc. and fem., (S, K,) Liberal, bountiful, munificent, or generous: (S, * K:) or one who affects, or constrains himself, to be generous: (Msb:) or who gives without being asked, to preserve the receiver from the ignominy of asking: (MF:) or who gives what is meet to him to whom it is meet: (El-Karmánee, TA:) or who gives what is meet to him to whom it is meet, not for a compensation; so that it has a more special signification than مُحْسِنٌ : (MF:) pl. [of pauc., masc.,] أَجْوَادٌ and (of mult., TA) جُوْدٌ , (S, A, K,) like as قُذُلٌ is pl. of قَذَالٌ , but the و is made quiescent because it is an unsound letter, (S,) [in some copies of the K جُوُدٌ ,] and أَجَاوِدُ , (S, K,) contr. to analogy, (TA,) or أَجَاوِيدُ , [reg., as pl. of أَجْوَادٌ ,] (A,) and جُوَدَآءُ (S, K) and جُوَدَةٌ , (CK, [in some copies of the K omitted,]) or جُوْدَةٌ , or جُوُدَةٌ , [written in the latter manner in a MS. copy of the K,] with ة added to the [proper] pl. form [ جُوْدٌ or جُوُدٌ ], accord. to the doctrine of Sb: (TA:) جُوْدٌ is used as a fem. pl., (S, Msb,) and is like نُوْرٌ pl. of نَوَارٌ . (S.) Also, applied alike to the male and the female, (S,) A courser; a fleet, or swift, and excellent, horse; (L;) a horse fleet, or swift, in running; or excellent in running, or in the motion of his legs; as also جَوْدٌ : (Bd in xxxviii. 30:) or that outstrips others: (Jel ib.:) i. q. رَائِعٌ : (S, L, K:) pl. جِيَادٌ , (S, A, Bd, L, Msb, K,) which by rule should be جِوَادٌ , like طِوَالٌ , but this latter form has not been heard from the Arabs; (L;) or جِيَادٌ is pl. of جَوْدٌ , or of جَيِّدٌ ; (Bd ubi suprá;) and جَوَادٌ has also for its pl. أَجْيَادٌ , [a pl. of pauc., and irregular, or this is pl. of جَيّدٌ , and therefore, though irregularly, retains the ى substituted for و ] (S, L,) and أَجْوَادٌ , [also a pl. of pauc., but agreeable with rule, or this is pl. of جَوْدٌ ,] (L,) and أَجَاوِيدُ (S, L) is pl. of أَجْوَادٌ . (L.) Hence, أَقْبَلَ جَوَادًا He came on, or advanced, like a horse that is termed جواد : and سِرْتُ إِلَيْهِ جَوَادًا I went to him, or it, like a horse that is so termed. (Mgh in art. غذ .) You say also, عَدَا عَدْوًا جَوَادًا He ran a long run. (A, TA.) And سِرْنَا عُقْبَةً جَوَادًا , and عُقْبَتَيْنِ جَوَادَيْنِ , and عُقَبًا جِيَادًا (S, A) and أَجْوَادًا , (A, TA,) We journeyed a long march or stage, and two long marches or stages, and long marches or stages. (S, A, TA.)

Core sense — good, goodly, approvable, or excellentgenerated

Originally of the measure فَيْعِلٌ, as the Basrees say, that is جَيْوِدٌ, the و being changed into ى because it is meksoor and preceded by ى, and the augmentative ى then being incorporated into it.

Or, as the Koofees say, of the measure فَيْعَلٌ, like عَيْطَلٌ and the like, because no sound word is found of the measure فَيْعِلٌ except صَيْقِلٌ, a woman's name, and the unsound is made to agree with the sound.

Or, as others say, of the measure فَعِيلٌ (so I find in one copy of the S), originally جَوِيدٌ, the kesreh of the و being, according to them, dropped as difficult to pronounce, and the sākin و and ى then coming together, the latter receives the rejected kesreh, and the و is changed into ى and incorporated into the augmentative ى.

Good, goodly, approvable, or excellent; the opposite of رَدِ ىْ; applied to a thing, or a commodity, an article of household-goods, or the like, and to a work or performance.

Plural جِيَادٌ and جِيَادَاتٌ, the latter a plural of a plural, that is, of جِيَادٌ; and جَيَائِدُ, with hemz, and, according to some, contrary to analogy.

[It is also applied to a man, meaning excellent, or egregious, in some quality; sometimes, though very rarely, in a quality that is disapproved.]
