Core sense — he made a hole in it, he cut it; he traversed a countrygenerated

1.1he made a hole through it; he perforated, pierced, or bored itاجتابهُ

maṣdar جَوْبٌ and تَجْوَابٌ: he made a hole in it, or rent, or tore, it.

Also: he cut it; he cut it in the way one cuts a جَيْب [or an opening at the neck and bosom of a shirt etc.]; he cut a hole in the middle of it; he cut a piece out of the middle of it; he hollowed it out, or excavated it.

he made a hole in the rock; he perforated, or bored, itجاب الصَّخْرَةَ

he hollowed out, or cut out in a round form, the opening at the neck and bosom of the shirtجاب القَمِيصَ

In the Qur'ān 89:8. The valley meant is Wádi-l-Kurà.

in the article جيب; and also, with maṣdar apparently جِيبٌ, originally جَوْبٌ — see the verse cited below and Sh's remark on it.

Also جوّبهُ. The part cut is the جَيْب, in the article جيب. Or: he cut the جَيْب of the shirt; or he made a جَيْب to the shirt; also جَيَّبَهُ, in the article جيب, maṣdar تَجْيِيبٌ.

But in one copy, instead of جِيبَ I find جَيْبَ, and in the article بطر, شَقَّ.

Sh remarks that this verb تجيب, or the, is not from الجَيْبُ [meaning the opening at the neck and bosom of a shirt etc.], because its middle radical is و while that of الجيب is ى: that is, جاب, muḍāriʿ يجيب, is originally جَوَبَ, muḍāriʿ يَجْوِبُ.

Its origin is said to have been this: Sahl (or Suheyl) Ibn-ʿAmr had an insane son, and a man said to him أَيْنَ أَمُّكَ, that is, “Where are you going?”; the son, thinking that he had said أَيْنَ أُمُّكَ [“Where is your mother!”], answered, “She has gone to buy flour”; on which his father spoke the words of this proverb.

Nounجَوَابٌ2 senses · 1 main

Core sense — an answer, a reply, a responsegenerated

1

An answer, a reply, or a response — to a letter or writing, and to a saying or question; either affirmative or negative.

According to some it comes only after a question or a demand; but this is not correct, for it is often a reply to an affirmation.

جِيبَةٌ means the same, and so do جَابَةٌ and مَجُوبَةٌ.

The plural of جواب is أَجْوِبَةٌ and جَوَابَاتٌ.

In grammar, حَرْفُ جَوَابٍ is a responsive particle.

جَوَابُ شَرْطٍ is an apodosis, the complement or correlative of a condition, like أَكْرَمْتُكَ in the saying إِنْ جِئْتَنِى أَكْرَمْتُكَ; it is also called جَزَآءُ شَرْطٍ and جَوَابُ جَزَآءٍ.

جَوَابُ قَسَمٍ is the complement of an oath.

1.1

Also the sound of a bird pouncing down from the sky.

And his people gave no answer but this: they said, "Drive them out of your city: these are indeed men who want to be clean and pure!"

But his people gave no other answer but this: they said, "Drive out the followers of Lut from your city: these are indeed men who want to be clean and pure!"

Nounأَجْوَبُ1 sense

Core sense — more, or most, quick in being answered, said of prayergenerated

1figurative · مجازwhat part of the night is that in which prayer is most quick in being answered?أَىُّاللَّيْلِ أَجْوَبُ دَعْوَةً

See Form 4. This occurs in a question put to Mohammad.

The meaning is: what part of the night is that in which prayer most quickly penetrates? or in which prayer is most quick in being answered? or in which God is most quick in answering prayer?

The word is either from جُبْتُ الأَرْضَ, “I traversed the land”, and means more, or most, penetrating to the places from which the answer is imagined to proceed.

Or it means more, or most, quick in being answered, from جَابَتِ الدَّعْوَةُ, of the measure فَعُلَت [that is, originally جَوُبَت], “the prayer became answered” — a verb that is not in use, just as فَقِيرٌ and شَدِيدٌ are imagined to be derived from فَقُرَ and شَدُدَ.

Or it means more, or most, quick of answer, from أَجَابَ, and is then irregular, like أَطْوَعُ [“more obedient”] from الطَّاعَةُ [that is, from أَطَاعَ, “he obeyed”], and like أَعْطَى [“more, or most, excellent in giving”, from أَعْطَى, “he gave”], and لَوَاقِحَ [plural of لَاقِحَةٌ, a fecundating wind, from أَلْقَحَ, “he, or it, fecundated”], and the like.

If so, the word is irregular because a word of the measure أَفْعَلُ of this kind is not derived from a verb of more than three letters, except in certain departures from the regular course of speech.

, [see 4,] in the following question, put to Mohammad, (TA,) أَىُّاللَّيْلِ أَجْوَبُ دَعْوَةً is either from جُبْتُ الأَرْضَ (K, TA) “ I traversed the land, ” (TA,) and signifies More, or most, penetrating to the places whence the answer is imagined to proceed; (K, TA;) or [it signifies more, or most, quick in being answered,] from جَابَتِ الدَّعْوَةُ , of the measure فَعُلَت , [i. e., originally جَوُبَت ,] “ the prayer became answered, ” which, however, is a verb not in use, like as فَقِيرٌ and شَدِيدٌ are imagined to be derived from فَقُرَ and شَدُدَ : (Z, TA:) or it signifies more, or most, quick of answer, [from أَجَابَ ,] and is [anomalous, and] similar to أَطْوَعُ [“ more obedient ”], from الطَّاعَةُ , [i. e. from أَطَاعَ “ he obeyed, ”] (M, L, TA,) and to أَعْطَى [“ more, or most, excellent in giving, ” from أَعْطَى “ he gave ”], and لَوَاقِحَ [pl. of لَاقِحَةٌ a “ fecundating ” wind, (in the Kur xv. 22,) from أَلْقَحَ “ he, or it, fecundated ”], (M, L, K, TA,) and the like; (M, L, TA;) and if so, the word is anomalous because a word of the measure أَفْعَلُ of this kind is not derived from a verb of more than three letters, except in certain cases of deviation from the constant course of speech: (L, TA:) the meaning is, What part of the night is that [in which prayer most quickly penetrates? or] in which prayer is most quick in being answered? (Mgh:) or what part of the night is that in which God is most quick in answering prayer? (L, TA.)
