A collective generic noun: an army; a military force; a legion; a body of troops or soldiers; a collected body of men prepared for war; auxiliaries.

This is the ism waḥda, just as رُومِىٌّ is the ism waḥda of رُومٌ; the plural of the former is جُنُودٌ, and the plural of paucity is أَجْنَادٌ.

Souls are troops collected together—الأَرْوَاحُ جُنُودٌ مُجَنَّدَةٌ

Said in a tradition. The meaning is that souls are created of two parties, each party agreeing together and disagreeing with the other party, like two armies opposed to each other.

1.1To God belong kinds, or species, of created things, of which honey is one—إِنَّ لِلّهِ جُنُودًا مِنْهَا العَسَلُ

Also any kind, or species, of creatures, or created things, regarded alone, by itself, apart from others.

These are the kinds [by means of which He effects his purposes as by armies or auxiliaries].

Said in a proverb, first spoken by Moʿáwiyeh, when he heard that El-Ashtar had been given some honey containing poison to drink, and died of it. It is used when rejoicing at a misfortune that has struck an enemy.

In the history of El-Mesʿoodee it occurs as إِنَّ لِلّهِ جُنْدًا فِى العَسَلِ.

A term used in Syria, and afterwards by the Arabs from Syria in Spain: a city [with its territory; i. e. a province, or district]; or particularly a city of Syria [with its territory].

Plural أَجْنَادٌ.

Syria consists of five اجناد: Dimashk [or Damascus], Hims [or Emessa], Kinnesreen, El-Urdunn [or the Jordan], and Filasteen or Falasteen [or Palestine]. They were called this because the military forces were collected from them. [See مِخْلَافٌ.]
