muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُ·ـِيَفْعِلُmaṣdarجُنُوحٌ جَنْحٌ

Core sense — he, or it, inclined, or leant, towards itgenerated

1.1he, or it, inclined, or leant, to itإِلَيْهِ

which agrees with analogy, of the dialect of Temeem, and the most chaste form; also جَنُحَ, of the dialect of Keys, and جَنِحَ.

اجتنح and اجنح have the same meaning.

he, or it, inclined, or leant, towards itلَهُ

In some copies of the K, through the omission of a و after it, this is made to relate to what follows it there.

and if they incline to peace, incline to itوَإِنْ جَنَحُوا لِلسَّلْمِ فَٱجْنَحْ لَهَا

Qur'ān 8:63. سلم is made feminine here because it has the same meaning as مُصَالَحَة.

One also says جَنَحُوا لِلسَّلْمِ and إِلَيْهِ.

1.1.1he inclined, or leant, on one side; he leant upon his bowاجتنح

Said of a man.

he leant upon himاجتنح عَلَيْهِ

1.3he hit, or hurt, its جَنَاح [or wing], that is, the جناح of the birdجَنَحَهُ

.

he hit, or hurt, the arm of such a oneجَنَحَ فُلَانًا

In some copies of the K, through the omission of a و, this meaning is wrongly made to relate to اجنح; so in the copies used by MF and SM, who state that the right verb is جَنَحَ.

1.4he had his جَوَانِح [the ribs so called] broken by the heaviness of his loadجُنِحَ

Said of a camel. Or: he had the first of his ribs broken in the part next the breast.

Nounجَنَاحٌ4 senses · 1 main

Core sense — a wing; the arm of a man; a sidegenerated

1figurative · مجازthe wing of a bird or other flying thingيَد

In a bird or flying thing it is the limb that corresponds to the يد of a man; and also the يد [i.e. arm, sometimes also meaning hand, (see a meaning of جَنَحَ)] of a man; and the upper arm, from the shoulder to the elbow — each of these is so called because it is on one side of the body; and the armpit.

Plural أَجْنِحَةٌ and أَجْنُحٌ. The singular, though masculine, takes the latter plural, which properly belongs to a feminine singular of this form, because جناح is assimilated to رِيشَةٌ [or rather, I think, to يَدٌ, which is feminine]; but some hold جناح to be both masculine and feminine.
