Form 1جَنَبَهُ13 senses · 6 main
muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarجَنَبٌ جَنَابَةٌ جُنُوبٌ

Core sense — he broke his side; he led him by his side; he put him far awaygenerated

1.1

He broke his side; or he hit, or hurt, his side.

[The muḍāriʿ in this sense is probably جَنُبَ, and the maṣdar, according to the TK, is جَنْبٌ.]

1.1.1leading another horse, riderless, beside the horse one rides in a raceطَوْعُ الجَنَبِ

He led him by his side; said of a horse or the like, and of a captive.

In this sense the muḍāriʿ is جَنُبَ and the maṣdar جَنَبٌ and مَجْنَبٌ.

See جَنَبٌ .جِنَابٌ.

This is forbidden in a tradition, [in which it is said, لَا جَلَبَ وَلَا جَنَبَ], in relation to horse-racing and to the collecting of the poor-rate.

In racing, a man does this when the horse he rides has grown weak, or when he fears he will not win on it, or when he draws near the goal, moving himself to the other horse so as to win.

In relation to the poor-rate it means the collector's alighting in the most remote of the places from which the portion appointed for the poor-rate is to be collected, and then ordering that the camels or the like be led to him; or the owner of the property going off to a distance, or aside, with his property, so that the collector has to go far in search of it.

See more in art. جلب, first paragraph.

1.1.2he put away from him, or removed far from him, the thing, or the evilاجنبهُ

He put him, or it, at a distance, or sent him away, or removed him far away, alienating or estranging him, as though he put him aside; also جانبهُ. And he pushed, thrust, or drove him, or it, away, aside, or to a distance.

Also جَنَبَهُ الشَّىْءَ, or الشَّرَّ; and جنّبهُ, which is intensive.

And put away from me and my sons our worshipping of idolsوَٱجْنُبْنِى وَبَنِىَّ أَنْ نَعْبُدَ الأَصْنَامَ

In the Qur'ān 14:38; according to one reading, وَأَجْنِبْنِى.

1.1.3

He yearned towards, longed for, or desired, him, or it.

1.2he went aside, out of the way, or far away, with him, or itجَنَبَ بِهِ

.

Or, like جَنَبَهُ in the sense explained above: he put him, or it, at a distance, or sent him away.

1.2.1he alighted, or settled, as a stranger among the sons of such a oneجَنَبَ فِى بَنِى فُلَانٍ

and, apparently, تجنّب.

Excellent are the people, they, to the neighbour who is a strangerنِعْمَ القَوْمُ هُمْ لِجَارِ الجَنَابَةِ

See also جُنُبٌ.

Do not refuse me because of being remote in respect of relationshipلَا تَحْرِمَنِّى عَنْ جَنَابَةٍ

See also جَنَابَةٌ, mentioned below as a substantive.

1.2.2the wind became south, or southerly; it blew from that directionجَنَبَتِ الرِّيحُ

maṣdar جُنُوبٌ and اجنبت.

That is, it became such as is termed جَنُوب.

Or this, or جَنِبَت: the wind changed, or veered, so as to become جَنُوب.

1.2.3figurative · مجاز — inferredhe became disquieted by violent desire to see him, or to meet himجَنَبَ إِلَيْهِ

And hence; see جَنُوبٌ.

Or إِلَى لِقَائِهِ; and جَنِبَ. The maṣdar is apparently جَنْبٌ, the verb being said in the K to be like نَصَرَ and سَمِعَ.

1.3he (a camel) limped by reason of pain in his sideجَنِبَ

.

Or he had an affection resembling ظَلْع [limping, or halting], but not the same as it.

Or, according to As, his lungs clave to his side from violent thirst; or, according to the Arabs of the desert, as ISk says, he became bent, or contorted, from violent thirst; and he (a camel) had a pain in his side from violent thirst.

The adjective is جَنِبٌ, which Dhu-r-Rummeh applies to an ass.

1.3.1the bucket leaned to one sideجنبت الدَّلْوُ

This happens through the breaking of one or two of the thongs tying it to the cross-bars.

[Apparently جَنِبَت.]

1.4

جَنِبَ and جَنُبَ and جَنَبَ are synonymous with أَجْنَبَ in a sense explained below: see 4.

1.5he became affected by the disease called ذَاتُ الجَنْبِ [pleurisy]جُنِبَ

He had a complaint of his side.

1.6they were affected by the south, or southerly, wind called جُنُوبجُنِبُوا

Also, in allusion to the fertilizing effect attributed to that wind: they were affected by it in their cattle.

Core sense — the side of a man; a lateral part, region, or quarter; pleurisygenerated

1I sat by the side of such a oneقَعَدْتُ إِلَى جَنْبِ فُلَانٍ

A word of well-known meaning: the side, or half, or lateral half, of a man and the like, the same as شِقٌّ; also جَانِبٌ and جَنَبَةٌ. Or the part of a man beneath the armpit, extending to the flank; also جَانِبٌ, because it is the side of the person.

Plural جُنُوبٌ, and [a plural of paucity of the same word] أَجْنَابٌ, and [of جَانِبٌ] جَوَانِبُ, and جَنائِبُ, which is irregular [apparently of جَنْبٌ (as لَيَائِلُ is a plural of لَيْلٌ), or of جَنَبَةٌ (as حَوَائِجُ is a plural of حَاجَةٌ, originally حَوَجَةٌ), or of both].

In the Qur'ān 4:40. Or the one who is near one, or by one's side; or the companion in every good affair; or the husband; or the wife.

الجُنَابُ is synonymous with it, and sometimes الجَنْبُ, as will be seen below. It is called by the first of these three names at the present day.

A severe disease: an inflammatory swelling in the [pleura, or] membrane within the ribs; or an ulcer, or purulent pustule, that forms inside a man's side. It is a severe disease in the side.

According to El-Hejeree it is in either side, and they assert that when it is in the left side the patient dies. According to ISh it is the دُبَيْلَة, an ulcer that penetrates into the belly; or the ulcer that comes out inside the side and discharges internally, from which the sufferer seldom recovers.

One who suffers from it and dies of it, or, as some say, anyone afflicted with a complaint of the side while warring in the cause of God, is reckoned a martyr. Soldiers on campaign are notoriously more subject to it than people in most other circumstances, and apparently for this reason it is called دَآءُ الصَّنَادِيدِ [the disease of the courageous chiefs].

Its feminine is ذَاتُ الجُنْبِ; the complaint being the disease mentioned above, or what is termed الدُّبَيْلَة. [See also مَجْنُوبٌ.]

Also جَانِبٌ and جَنَابٌ and جَنْبَةٌ and جَنَبَةٌ and جَنَابَةٌ.

It is said that the primary meaning of جَنْبٌ is the part of the body mentioned at the beginning of this paragraph, and that its use in the sense of نَاحيَةٌ is metaphorical, as with يَمِينٌ and شِمَالٌ. But نَاحِيَةٌ is given in the Msb as the primary meaning of جَانِبٌ, though according to the K and ISd its primary meaning seems to be the one first mentioned.

They walked, or went on foot, on either side of himمَشَوْا جَانِبَيْهِ

Also جَنَابَيْهِ and جَنْبَتَيْهِ and جَنَابَتَيْهِ.

They went along journeying on either side of himمَرُّوا يَسِيرُونَ جَنَابَيْهِ

Also جَنْبَتَيْهِ and جَنَابَتَيْهِ.

Such a one will not approach our quarterفُلَانٌ لَا يَطُورُ بِجَنَبَتِنَا

Thus according to AO, with fetḥ to the ن.

IJ, however, says that people commonly say أَنَا فِى ذَرَاكَ وَجَنَبَتِكَ [meaning I am under your protection and in your quarter], but that the correct expression is جَنْبَتِكَ, with the ن sākin.

The heat is on either side of Suheyl [Canopus]الحَرُّ جَانِبَىْ سُهَيْلٍ
They surrounded him on all his sidesأَحَاطُوا بِهِ مِنْ جَانِبَيْهِ

The Arabs said this of the period next before, and that next after, the auroral rising of Canopus, which rising began, in central Arabia, at the start of the era of the Flight, about the 4th of August, Old Style. This is the greatest heat.

Literally, on his two sides; the surrounding parts are divided into two, but without meaning that any of them remained empty.

From the explanation of the examples cited as evidence by Sb, in art. حول.

1.3This is little in comparison with your loveهٰذَا قَلِيلٌ جَنْبِ مَوَدَّتِكَ

A part, or portion, of a thing; the greater, or main, part of it; most of it; or a great part of it. [And جَانِبٌ, which is thus used in the L in art. جنح and by many authors.]

Hence, or perhaps from جَنْبٌ in the second of the senses given above, which conveys the idea of juxtaposition and so of comparison.

1.4figurative · مجاز — inferredO my grief for my negligence in respect of what is due to God!يَا حَسْرَتَا عَلَى مَا فَرَّطْتُ فِى جنْبِ ٱللّٰهِ

In the Qur'ān 39:57; it means فى جَانِبِه.

Fear God in respect of your brother's right, and do not impugn his honourاِتَّقِ ٱللّٰهَ فِى جَنْبِهِ وَلَا تَقْدَحْ فِى سَاقِهِ

That is, in respect of obedience to God; or in respect of [the means of attaining] nearness to God; or nearness to God in Paradise; or in respect of the way of God, to which He has called me — that is, professing His unity and confessing the prophetic office of Mohammad.

This is a saying of the Arabs. According to the copies of the K it means لَا تَقْتُلْهُ [do not slay him]; or, as in the L and in the author's original draft, لا تَغْتَلْهُ [do not slay him secretly, or when he is off his guard], from الغِيلَةُ, and do not throw him into trouble or trial. Or, according to some, فى جنبه means in detracting from his reputation, or reviling him.

[See also Freytag's Arab. Prov. 1:240.]

A poet cited by IAar. See also جَانِبٌ. The meaning is: in detracting from my reputation, or reviling me; or, according to MF, in my case.

What have you done in the case of the thing that I want?مَا فَعَلْتَ فِى جَنْبِ حَاجَتِى

Core sense — a stranger; not a relation; one obliged to perform a total ablutiongenerated

1the neighbour who belongs to another people, not of one's family or lineageالجَارُ الجُنُبُ

El-Fárábee: this word — sometimes used in the singular form as a plural, and having no feminine form — and جَانِبٌ, and أَجْنَبِىٌّ (which Az, in art. روح, says is seldom or never used by the Arabs, though he mentions it in its own article), and أَجْنَبُ are synonymous, meaning a stranger; also جَنِيبٌ. Or a man who is distant, or remote; or distant, or remote, in respect of relationship (Az and Msb, explaining the third and fourth); or not a relation, as appears from what follows.

جَانِبٌ [as an ism fāʿil] means one alighting, or settling, as a stranger among a tribe.

Plural of the first أَجْنَابٌ, of the second جُنَّابٌ, and of the fourth أَجَانِبُ.

Occurring in the Qur'ān 4:40; also جَارُ الجُنُبِ. He is of another lineage than the one whose neighbour he is; he is not a relation. Or one who is distant, or remote, in an absolute sense. Or the person who is not a relation to another, and who comes to him and asks him for protection, and stays with him; such a one has the title to respect that belongs to him as the other's neighbour, and to his protection, and as relying upon his safeguard and promise.

From the TA in art. جور. This differs from جَارُ الجَنْبِ, see above.

And every kind of plant, or of tree generally, that produces [new leaves such as are termed] رَبْل in the season of the صَيْف [which may mean either summer or spring]; or every kind of plant that produces leaves in that season without rain.

Or a name given to many plants, all of them عُرُوق [perhaps meaning resembling roots, that is, straggling, or spreading like roots]; so called because they are less than large trees and higher than those that have no root-stock in the earth.

They comprise the نَصِىّ and صِلِّيَان and حَمَاط and مَكْر and حذر [so in the TA, but I do not find it elsewhere, and think it may be a miswriting for حَزْر, of which حَزْرَة (the name of a certain sour tree) is probably the ism waḥda] and دَهْمَآء, which are smaller than شَجَر and better than بُقُول. All this has been heard from the Arabs.

Or green and fresh صلّيان; or what is [of a kind] between بَقْل and شَجَر, being [in the TA وهما, but this is evidently a mistake for وَهِىَ] of the kind whose root remains in the winter while the branches perish.

1

The south wind, or a southerly wind. It is of the feminine gender, and, according to Sb, both a substantive and an adjective, so that one says رِيحٌ جَنُوبٌ as well as جَنُوبٌ alone and رِيحُ الجَنُوبِ.

It is the wind opposite to the one called the شَمَال [consequently, according to the S, the wind that blows from the direction of the south pole]; the wind that blows from the direction of the left hand of a person standing facing the kibleh [meaning here that corner of the Kaabeh in which the Black Stone is set, which corner is towards the east].

Or, according to 'Omárah, the wind that blows from the quarter between the place where Canopus rises [S. 29 E. in central Arabia] and the place where the same star sets [S. 29 W. in the same latitude]. Or from the quarter between the place where Canopus rises and the place where the sun sets in winter [W. 26 S. in central Arabia].

Or it is a hot wind that blows in every season, from that part of the tract between the quarter from which the east wind blows and that from which the west wind blows which is next to the place where Canopus rises. Or the wind that blows from the quarter between the place where Canopus rises and that where the Pleiades set [W. 26 N. in central Arabia]. The points from which it usually blows seem to differ somewhat in different regions.

As says that the جنوب is attended by good and by a fertilizing influence, and the شمال by a drying up [of the earth and the like]. According to IAar it is hot everywhere except in Nejd, where it is cold, or cool.
