Core sense — he collected much, he amassed; they attended the Friday congregational prayergenerated

2.1who has collected much wealth, and made it a provision for the casualties of fortuneالَّذِى جَمَّعَ مَالًا وَعَدَّدَهُ

he collected, gathered together, assembled, or drew together — but much, with great energy, vigorously, or well.

This is how I render جَمَعَ, explained above.

In the Qur'ān 104:2. Or: who has counted it over time after time; or who has amassed, or accumulated, wealth and the like; or who has gained, acquired, or earned wealth, which differs from جَمَعَ, explained above.

It is allowable to say جَمَعَ مَالًا without teshdeed, and that is the general reading in this passage of the Qur'ān. See also Form 1.

Lane cites “Bd in civ. 2” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
2.1.1she collected her eggs in her bellyحَمَّعَتْ

Said of a hen; maṣdar as above.

2.1.2they were present on the Friday, with the congregation, and performed the prayers with it on that dayجَمَّعُوا

Maṣdar as above.

(Bd in civ. 2; Msb, K.) Thus in the Kur [civ. 2], الَّذِى جَمَّعَ مَالًا وَعَدَّدَهُ (S, * Bd) Who hath collected much wealth, and hath made it a provision for the casualties of fortune, or reckoned it time after time: (Bd:) [or who hath amassed, or accumulated, wealth, &c.:] or who hath gained, acquired, or earned, wealth, &c.; thus differing from جَمَعَ , explained above: but it is allowable to say جَمَعَ مَالًا , without teshdeed; (Fr;) and thus it is [generally] read in this passage of the Kur. Core sense — he determined, or decided, upon an affair; they agreed in opinion; he prepared itgenerated

4.1I put the thing togetherأَجْمَعْتُ الشَّىْءَ
I collected the camels taken as spoil from every quarter and drove them awayأَجْمَعْتُ النَّهْبِ

See Form 1.

For instance, spoil, or plunder.

Or إِجْمَاعٌ simply means the driving of camels together, or collectively.

4.1.1I determined, or decided, upon the affair, as though I collected myself for itأَجْمَعْتُ الأَمْرَ

الإِجْمَاعُ also means the composing and settling of a thing that has been unsettled, such as an opinion one decides upon: or جَعْلُ الأَمْرِ جَمِيعًا بَعْدَ تَفَرُّقِهِ, that is, deciding upon an affair so as to make it firmly settled, after considering what its results might be and saying at one time, I will do this, and at another, I will do that.

عَلَى الأَمْرِ is used in the same way; said, for instance, of a journey, a fast, a going forth, a staying or an abiding.

he determined, or decided, upon his affairجَمَعَ أَمْرَهُ
I determined, or settled, the opinionأَجْمَعْتُ الرَّأْىِ
determine on your affair, and do not leave it unsettledأَجْمِعْ أَمْرَكَ وَلَا تَدَعْهُ مُنْتَشِرًا
then determine on your affair and prepare for itفَأَجْمَعُوا أَمْرَكُمْ وَشُرَكَآءَ كُمْ

For instance, a fast.

In the Qur'ān 10:72; so Fr and Ibn-'Arafeh. Or اِجْعَلُوهُ جَمِيعًا, which has that same meaning, and call your companions — شركاءكم being in the accusative, governed by a verb understood, since the verb in the text is not used with شركاء as its object, but only the unaugmented verb.

Or the meaning is: then determine, with your companions, upon your affair; so says Aboo-Is-hák, who adds that what Fr says is wrong. Or: then determine upon your affair and the affair of your companions, for وَأَمْرَ شُرَكَائِكُمْ.

therefore determine on your artifice, or stratagemفَأَجْمِعُوا كَيْدَكُمْ

In the Qur'ān 20:67. But some read فَٱجْمَعُوا كَيْدَكُمْ, meaning: combine all your artifice, and leave nothing of it unexerted; and this reading is favoured by the phrase فَجَمَع كَيْدَهُ in verse 62 of the same chapter.

4.1.2they agreed, or were of one opinion, upon the affairأَجْمَعُوا عَلَى الأَمْرِ

It also means agreeing, or uniting, in opinion.

اجتمعوا عَلَيْهِ and تجمّعوا عليه are used in the same way.

4.1.3I prepared, or made ready, such a thingأَجْمَعْتُ كَذَا

It also means preparing a thing, or making it ready; the same as الإِعْدَادُ. In the CK, wrongly, الاَعْدَادُ.

prepare for your affairأَجْمِعُوا أَمْرَكُمْ
4.1.4he bound the teats of the she-camel all togetherاجمع بِالنَّاقَةِ

It also means the binding of the teats of a she-camel all together with the صِرَار.

اجمع النَّاقَةِ and أَكْمَشَ بِهَا are used in the same sense.

4.1.5

It also means drying a thing, drying it up, or making it dry; the same as التَّجْفِيفُ وَالإِيبَاسُ. In the CK, wrongly, التَخْفُيفُ والاِيْناسُ.

Hence Aboo-Wejzeh Es-Saadee says

shāhid
وَأَجْمَعَتِ الهَوَاجِرُ كُلَّ رَجْعٍمِنَ الأَجْمَادِ وَالدَّمِثِ البَثَآءِ

[And the violent midday heats] dried up every pool left by a torrent [of the hard and elevated grounds and of the soft and even ground].

the land flowed in its soft tractsأَجْمَعَتِ الأَرْضُ سَائِلَةً

That is, in its hard tracts as well; in every part. See also Form 10.

Core sense — it collected itself together from every place; he exerted all his forcegenerated

10.1he summoned together every body of soldiersاستجمع كُلَّ مَجْمَعٍ

Said of one who demands, or summons, armies, or military forces.

[A north wind, cold and violent, inviting to collect themselves together the she-camels whose milk has dried up, seven or eight months after bringing forth or after pregnancy] — that he seems to have formed it on the pattern of the general run of verbs of the same class, or to have heard it in that sense from the people of the cities, towns, villages, and cultivated lands.

استجمع كُلَّ مَجْمَعٍ [He desired, or demanded, the collecting together of every body of soldiers; or he summoned together every body of soldiers]: said of him who demands, or summons, armies, or military forces. (S, TA.) [But this usage of the verb is perhaps post-classical: for Mtr says,] With respect to the saying of ElAbeewardee, 1 [A north wind, cold and vehement, inviting to collect themselves together the she-camels whose milk has dried up, they having passed seven or eight months since bringing forth, or since pregnancy], it seems that he has compared this verb with the generality of others of the same class, [and so derived the meaning in which he has here used it,] or that he heard it [in that sense] from the people of the cities, or towns, or villages, and cultivated lands. (Mgh.) شَآمِيَّةٌ تَسْتَجْمِعُ الشَّوْلَ حَرْجَفُ استجمع used intransitively is syn. with اجتمع , which see in two places, and تجمّع . (Msb, K.) استجمع السَّيْلُ The torrent collected itself together from every place. (S, Mgh, K.) استجمع الوَادِى The valley flowed in every place thereof. (TA.) [See also 4, last signification.] اِسْتَجْمَعَتْ لَهُ أُمُورُهُ His affairs, or circumstances, all combined in a manner pleasing to him. (Mgh, K.) استجمع الفَرَسُ جَرْيًا (S, Mgh, K) The horse exerted all his force, or energy, in running: (K, TA:) the last word is here in the accus. case as a specificative. (Mgh.) You say also, اِسْتَجْمَعُوا لَهُمْ , meaning They exerted [all] their strength, force, or energy, for fighting them: and hence, إِنَّ النَّاسِ قَدْ جَمَعُوا لَكُمْ [app. meaning Verily the men, or people, have exerted all their strength for fighting you]. (A, TA.) استجمع القَوْمُ The people, or company of men, all went away, not one of them remaining; like as one says of a valley flowing in every place thereof. (TA.) استجمع البَقْلُ The herbs, or leguminous plants, all dried up. (TA.)

Nounجَمْعٌ9 senses · 1 main

Core sense — a collection, a company of men; an army; the plural of a wordgenerated

1the day of resurrectionيَوْمُ الجَمْعِ

When all mankind will be collected together.

Maṣdar of Form 1.

1.1a name of El-Muzdelifehال

Used without the article; El-Muzdelifeh lies between 'Arafát and Minè. The word is determinate, like عَرَفَاتُ, and is so called because people collect themselves there, or because Adam met with Eve there after they had fallen from Paradise. Apparently it is also a name for the tract from 'Arafát to Minè, including both places.

the day of 'Arafeh, when the pilgrims halt at Mount 'Arafátيَوْمُ جَمْعٍ
the days of Minèأَيَّامُ جَمْعٍ
1.2

As a maṣdar used as a noun in its own right it also means a collection; a number together; an assembly; a company, troop, congregated body, party, or group; a mass, of men; the same as جَمَاعَةٌ, and so also مَجْمَعٌ, مَجْمِعٌ, مَجْمَعَةٌ, and جَمِيعٌ.

But جَمَاعَةٌ is also used of a collection of things other than men: of beasts, such as camels, horses, cattle, antelopes or gazelles — a herd, troop, or drove; of dogs — a pack; of sheep and goats — a flock; of birds — a flock or bevy; of bees or locusts — a swarm; and even of trees and of plants. It means a collection, assemblage, or aggregate of any things, whether many or few, and so do مَجْمُوعٌ and مَجْمَعٌ: a number, a plurality, a multitude, of any things.

The plural of جَمْعٌ is جُمُوعٌ.

1.3for him shall be the like of an army's share of the spoilلَهُ سَهْمٌ جَمْعٌ

In particular, an army, a military force; and so جَمِيعٌ.

Occurring in a tradition; more probably سَهْمُ جَمْعٍ.

1.4

Also the plural of a thing, or word — a proper plural, according to the grammarians, and, as the lexicologists use it, also a quasi-plural noun, which the grammarians distinguish by the terms اِسْمُ جَمْعٍ and جَمْعٌ لُغَوِىٌّ. جِمَاعٌ and جَمِيعٌ mean the same, except that this last is what is termed اِسْمٌ لَازِمٌ.

This apparently means a noun that does not govern another after it in the genitive as جَمْعٌ and جِمَاعٌ do, being likened in this to what is termed فِعْلٌ لَازِمٌ, that is, an intransitive verb. So of الخِبَآءُ, for instance, one says الجَمِيعُ الأَخْبِيَةُ, the plural is الاخبية — this is how I always find it used when it has this meaning, which is frequent in several of the older lexicons and in some others — not جَمِيعُ الخِبَآءِ الأَخْبِيَةُ.

Whereas one says جَمْعُ الخِبَآءِ الأَخْبِيَةُ and جِمَاعُ الخِبَآءِ الأَخْبِيَةُ, that is, the جَمْع, or plural, of الخباء is الخِبَآءِ; for الجِمَاعُ is what comprises a number of things. See also this last word below.

1.6

The worst sort of dates, because they are collected together and mixed from among the dates of fifty palm-trees; and afterwards, by predominant usage, any bad dates.

Or a certain kind of dates mixed together, of several sorts, not in demand, and mixed only because they are bad. Or it means, or also means, palm-trees of any kind grown from date-stones, whose name is unknown.

1.7

Red gum. Ibn-'Abbád. Apparently so called because it is collected and mixed with gum of a lighter colour.

1.8

The milk of a camel whose udder is bound with the صِرَار, that is, the milk that collects in the udder so bound; the milk of a camel whose udder is not so bound is called فُوَاقٌ. جَمِيعٌ is used in the same sense.

Core sense — Friday, the day of the congregation; a state of union; the weekgenerated

1may God make permanent the state of union between you twoأَدَامَ ٱللّٰهُ جُمْعَةَ مَا بَيْنَكُمَا

A noun from الاِجْتِمَاعُ, as its opposite فُرْقَةٌ is a noun from الااِفْتِرَاقُ. It means a state of union, agreement, congruity, or congregation; or sociableness, familiarity, companionship, fellowship, friendship, and amity; the same as أُلْفَةٌ.

Aboo-Sa'eed.

1.1Friday, the day of the congregationيَوْمُ الجُمْعَةِ

This is the original form, of the dialect of 'Okeyl; يَوْمُ الجُمُعَةِ, of the dialect of El-Hijáz, is the most correct form; يَوْمُ الجُمَعَةِ belongs to the dialect of Benoo-Temeem; and from frequency of usage الجُمَعَةُ alone is also said. It is a well-known day, formerly called the day of العَرُوبَة.

It is called يوم الجمعة because of the congregating of the people on it. Th states that the first to name it so was Kaab Ibn-Lu-eí; and he is related to have said that it was so called because Kureysh used to gather themselves together to Kuseí on that day, in the building called دَارُ النَّدْوَةِ.

According to the R, Kaab Ibn-Lu-eí was the first to gather a congregation on the day of العروبة, which was not called الجمعة until the coming of El-Islám; and he was the first to name it الجمعة, for Kureysh used to congregate to him on this day, and he would preach to them and remind them of the mission of the apostle of God, telling them that he would be one of his descendants, and bidding them follow him and believe in him.

Or, as some say, it was so called in the time of El-Islám because of their congregating in the mosque; according to a tradition, the Ansár named it so because of their congregating on it; or it was so named because God collected on it the materials from which Adam was created. So I 'Ab.

Those who say الجُمَعَةُ treat it as an adjective, meaning that this day collects men much, comparing it to هُمَزَةٌ, لُمَزَةٌ, and ضُحَكَةٌ.

The plurals are جُمَعٌ, جُمْعَاتٌ, جُمُعَاتٌ, and جُمَعَاتٌ; the last is the plural of جُمَعَةٌ, and by analogy of جُمْعَةٌ as well, but not of جُمَعٌ. So AHát.

1.2the prayer of Fridayصَلَاةٌ الجُمْعَةِ

In the same way, from frequency of usage, الجُمْعَةُ alone is said.

1.3the week, the days of the week taken togetherالجُمْعَةُ

With the م sākin. IAar says that the Arabs reckoned the Sabbath, السَّبْت, that is Saturday, as the first of these days, though they called Sunday the first of the days.

1.4a collection of pebblesجُمْعَةٌ مِنْ حَصًى

جُمْعَةٌ also means the same as مَجْمُوعَةٌ, that is, things collected together, a collection of things.

Saturday]) as the first, though they called Sunday the first of the days. (Msb.) جُمْعَةٌ is also syn. with مَجْمُوعَةٌ [meaning Things collected together; or a collection of things]; (K;) as in the phrase جُمْعَةٌ مِنْ حَصًى [a collection of pebbles]. (TA.) 1.3the congregational mosque, in which the Friday prayers are performedالمَسْجِدُ الجَامِعُ

The headword alone may be used in this sense too. It is so called because it collects the people for a certain time.

One may also say مَسْجِدُ الجَامِعِ, meaning مَسْجِدُ اليَوْمِ الجَامِعِ, as one says الحَقُّ اليَقِينُ and حَقُّ اليَقِينِ, the latter meaning حَقُّ الشَّىْءِ اليَقِينِ; for a noun may not be prefixed to another of the same meaning except with this kind of implied word. Or, according to Fr, the Arabs used to do so because the two words themselves differ.

Or مسجد الجامع is a mistake, so says Lth; but all others allow it, for the Arabs do prefix a noun to another of the same meaning, and also to its adjective, as in the Qur'ānic phrases دِينُ القَيِّمَةِ (98:4) and وَعْدَ الصِّدْقِ (46:15). Plural جَوَامِعُ.

It may sometimes have the like meaning; the definition given is IAar's.

3I took my right, or due, all of itأَخَذْتُ حَقِّى أَجْمَعَ

It is also a singular with the meaning of a plural, without any proper singular of its own. Its plural is أَجْمَعُونَ, its feminine is جَمْعَآءُ, and the plural of this feminine is جُمَعُ, though by rule it should be formed by adding ا and ت to the singular, as the plural of أَجْمَعُ is formed by adding و and ن.

The original form from which جُمَعُ is changed is جَمْعَاوَاتٌ, or it is جَمَاعَى; it is not جُمْعٌ, because أَجْمَعُ is not an adjective as أَحْمَرُ is, whose plural is حُمْرٌ: it is determinate, though of the measure of an adjective, which is indeterminate; and though it agrees with the noun before it, like an adjective, it is shown not to be an adjective by its having no broken plural.

It is a simple corroborative, and so are أَجْمَعُونَ, جَمْعَآءُ, and جُمَعُ; they are not used as mubtadaʾ, nor as khabar, nor as the agent of a verb, nor as the object of a verb, as some other corroboratives are, such as نَفْسُهُ, عَيْنُهُ, and كُلُّهُ.

I saw the women, all of themرأَيْتُ النِّسْوَةَ جُمَعَ
they came, all of themجَاؤُوا أَجْمَعُونَ
I saw them, all of themرَأَيْتُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
I passed by them, all of themمَرَرْتُ بِهِمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
the palace pleased me, all of itأَعْجَبَنِى القَصْرُ أَجْمَعَ
the house, all of itالدَّارُ جَمْعَآءَ

In this and similar cases the last word is imperfectly declinable and determinate.

Fr mentions these two phrases with the accusative, as a denotative of state, but does not allow أَجْمَعُونَ or جُمَعُ to be used otherwise than as corroboratives. IDrst, however, allows أَجْمَعِينَ to be used as a denotative of state, and this is correct.

and pray sitting, all of youفَصَلُّوا جُلُوسًا أَجْمَعِينَ

The tradition is related in both ways, أَجْمَعُونَ as well; though some make اجمعين here a corroborative of a pronoun understood in the accusative, as though the speaker said أَعْنِيكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ, I mean you, all of you. So the K, in the article بتع.

Or اجمعين in this case is a corruption committed by the relaters in the first age; and it is a mistake to say that it is in the accusative as a denotative of state, for corroboratives are determinate, while the denotative of state is indeterminate in form or in effect. On the use of this corroborative together with others like it, see أَبْتَعُ.

they came, all of themجَاؤُوا بِأَجْمَعِهِمْ

بِأَجْمُعِهِمْ, with damm to the م, is also said; so ISk.

I took, or received, the property, all of itقَبَضْتُ المَالَ أَجْمَعَهُ
they came, all of themجَاؤُوا جَمِيعًا

جَمِيعٌ is also used as a corroborative, as in this example.

قَبَضْتُ المَالَ جَمِيعَهُ is like أَجْمَعَهُ, explained above; and جَمِيعَةً occurs as its feminine, but this is irregular.

Core sense — a place of collecting; a place in which people assemblegenerated

1the place where the two seas meetمَجْمَعُ البَحْرَيْنِ

This, and مَجْمِعٌ — the latter irregular, like مَشْرِقٌ and مَغْرِبٌ — a place of collecting, and the like. Plural مَجَامِعُ.

the place where my neck and my shoulder-blade meetفضَرَبَ بِيَدِهِ مَجْمَعَ بَيْنَ عُنُقِى وَكَتِفِى

In the Qur'ān 18:59.

Occurring in a tradition, in which مَا seems to have been dropped by the copyist between مجمع and بين; the sense is: and he struck with his hand the place where my neck and my shoulder-blade meet.

Hence also the phrase مَجَامِعُ المَحَامِدِ, explained above; see جَامِعٌ, near the end of that paragraph. And مَجَامِعُ الأُمُورِ means the concurrences of affairs, of circumstances, or of events.

A place in which people collect, assemble, or congregate; and مَجْمَعَةٌ likewise means an assembly-room, a sitting-room in which people assemble. The plural of both is مَجَامِعُ.

Qur’ānic occurrences مَجْمَع
18:60
وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِفَتَىٰهُ لَآ أَبْرَحُ حَتَّىٰٓ أَبْلُغَ مَجْمَعَ ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ أَوْ أَمْضِىَ حُقُبًا

Behold, Moses said to his attendant, "I will not give up until I reach the junction of the two seas or (until) I spend years and years in travel."

18:61
فَلَمَّا بَلَغَا مَجْمَعَ بَيْنِهِمَا نَسِيَا حُوتَهُمَا فَٱتَّخَذَ سَبِيلَهُۥ فِى ٱلْبَحْرِ سَرَبًا

But when they reached the Junction, they forgot (about) their Fish, which took its course through the sea (straight) as in a tunnel.

Occurrences of this form in the Qur’ān, not Lane’s choice of verse. They show the word in use; they do not say which sense above applies. Where more occur than are shown, the shortest āyāt are chosen.
