Core sense — he hit his skin, he beat him, he flogged him with a whipgenerated

He hit, or hurt, his skin — as one says رَأَسَهُ and بَطَنَهُ, he beat his skin. He beat him, namely a criminal; he struck him with a whip and with a sword; he flogged him with a whip, or with whips.

MF, on the letter د, says that جَلَدْتُ is sometimes written and pronounced جَلَدُّ.

The maṣdar is as above.

Or, according to some, يَجْلِدُ بِذَنَبِهِ [it strikes with its tail] is said specially of the serpent called أَسْوَدُ.

Hence جَلَدَ عُمَيْرَةَ [i. q. نَكَحَ اليَدَ], a metonymic phrase. جَلْدُ عُمَيْرَةَ means الخَضْخَضَةُ and الاِسْتِمْنَآءُ بِاليَدِ, also termed التَّدْلِيلُ and الاِعْتِمَارُ; the similar act of a woman is termed الإِلْطَافُ.

But EshSháfi'ee's saying كَانَ مُجَالِدٌ يُجْلَدُ means that Mujálid used to be pronounced a liar, or suspected and accused of lying.

It is in the passive form; or جَلِدَت, a verb of the same form as فَرِحَ [or both may be correct, like ضُرِبَت and ضَرِبَت in the same sense]; and أَجْلَدَت [but I believe this last to be a mistake for أُجْلِدَت, like أُضْرِبَت].

24:4
وَٱلَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ ٱلْمُحْصَنَـٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَأْتُوا۟ بِأَرْبَعَةِ شُهَدَآءَ فَٱجْلِدُوهُمْ ثَمَـٰنِينَ جَلْدَةً وَلَا تَقْبَلُوا۟ لَهُمْ شَهَـٰدَةً أَبَدًا ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ

And those who launch a charge against chaste women, and produce not four witnesses (to support their allegations),- flog them with eighty stripes; and reject their evidence ever after: for such men are wicked transgressors;-

This is the only form of the word mentioned by most of the lexicographers. It occurs at the end of a verse with kesr to the second letter as well as the first, جِلِدٌ, by a licence allowed to a poet in such a case, of giving to a sākin letter in a rhyme the same vowel as the preceding letter has.

Also جَلَدٌ, like شِبْهٌ and شَبَهٌ and مِثْلٌ and مَثَلٌ; but ISk says this is unknown.

The skin of any animal; the covering of the body and limbs of an animal. Or the outer part of the بَشَرَةٌ [or upper skin] of an animal — but this is a strange explanation. Plural جُلُودٌ, and sometimes أَجْلَادٌ [a plural of small number].

1.1the body and limbs of a man; the whole person; his self—أَجْلَادٌ

تَجَالِيدُ has the same meaning. So called because enclosed by the skin. Plural of the former, أَجَالِدُ.

Agreeably with this explanation, Fr says that its plural جُلُود is used in the Kur 41:20; or it means the pudenda. But ISd holds that this word there means the skins, with which, as in manual operations, acts of disobedience are performed.

Or the skin of a young camel which is stuffed with panic grass, or some other plant, and put before a she-camel, so that she may be induced to take to what is not her own young one [and so yield her milk], or to take to the young one of another.

A ewe or she-goat whose young one dies at the time of her bringing it forth; also جَلَدَةٌ. Plural of the former جِلَادٌ, and of the latter جَلَدَاتٌ.

Also, as a collective noun: great she-camels having neither young ones nor milk; ism waḥda with ة [see also جَلْدٌ]. Or great camels among which are no little ones; ism waḥda with ة.

Mohammad Ibn-El-Mukarram: and, apparently as an ism jamʿ, sheep or goats, and camels, having neither young ones nor milk — apparently meaning having no little ones to which they give milk.

Or she-camels having no young ones with them, so that they endure the heat and cold patiently. Or she-camels having no milk, whose young ones have gone away from them; including what are called بَنَاتُ اللَّبُونِ and such as are above these in age, and also such as are called مَخَاصٌ and عِشَارٌ and حِيَالٌ. But when they have given birth to their young, they cease to be termed جَلَدٌ and are called عِشَارٌ and لِقَاحٌ. The plural is أَجْلَادٌ and [plural of plural] أَجَالِيدُ.
