muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُmaṣdarجَزَآءٌ مُجَازَاةٌ

1.1I paid the debt—جَزَيْتُ الدَّيْنَ
Muḍāriʿ جَزِىَ. Said of a thing: it paid, or made satisfaction; or it satisfied, sufficed, or contented.
I paid such a one his right, or due—جَزَيْتُ فُلَانًا حَقَّهُ
this garment does not suffice me—مَا يَجْزِينِى هٰذَا الثَّوْبُ
1.1.1it paid for him; it made satisfaction for him—جَزَى عَنْهُ
Said of a thing. Some of the lawyers use اجزى in this sense, like اجزأ.
جَزَى is of the dialect of El-Hijáz, and اجزأ of the dialect of Temeem.
a soul shall not make satisfaction for a soul—لَا تَجْزِى نَفْسٌ عَنْ نَفْسٍ شَيْئًا
Qur'ān 2:45; that is, for another soul. On the other rendering, شيئا is put in the accusative after the manner of a maṣdar.
a sheep, or goat, made satisfaction for you [as a sacrifice]—جَزَتْ عَنْكَ شَاةٌ
Benoo-Temeem say أَجْزَأَتْ with ء; this last, so explained, is a dialectal variant mentioned by IKtt.

such a thing served in place of such a thing, without sufficing—كَذَا عَنْ كَذَا
such a thing served in place of such a thing, without sufficing—اجزى

According to Fr, the first verb relates only to good, and the second to good and to evil; but according to others the first may relate to good and to evil, and the second to evil. [See also جَزَآءٌ below.]

Said in praying for another.
I punished him for his crime, sin, or act of disobedience—جَازَيْتُهُ بِذَنْبِهِ
