Core sense — he cut it off; he cut off the fruit of palm-trees; he committed a singenerated
1.1
He cut it, or cut it off.
[like جَزَمَهُ].
1.1.1he sheared the sheep, cutting off its wool—
Also جَرَمَ صُوفَ الشَّاةِ; maṣdar as above.
I clipped somewhat from it—جَرَمْتُ مِنْهُ
[Namely, the wool.] Like جَلَمْتُ.
1.1.2he cut the palm-trees, that is, cut off their fruit—
Muḍāriʿ as above; maṣdar جَرْمٌ, جَرَامٌ and جِرَامٌ. Also اجترمهُ.
he cut off the dates—جَرَمَ التَّمْرَ
[This is] the time of cutting off the fruit of the palm-trees—
Also الجِرَامِ.
1.1.3he estimated by guess the quantity of fruit on the palm-trees—
. Also اجترمهُ [like جَزَمَهُ and اجتزمهُ].
1.2he gained, acquired, or earned, [wealth, etc.]—
. With لِأَهْلِهِ: for his family. Also اجترم.
he went forth seeking [sustenance] for his family, using his skill—خَرَجَ يَجْرِمُ لِأَهْلِهِ
Also يَجْرِمُ أَهْلَهُ.
1.2.1and let not a people's hatred by any means induce you—وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ
In the Qur'ān [5:3 and 11]. Some explain it as: let not a people's hatred by any means occasion, or cause, you; others: let it not induce, or incite, you.
Some read لا يُجْرِمَنَّكُمْ, with ḍamma on the ى, and Zj says that جَرَمْتُ and أَجْرَمْتُ mean the same. But some say the meaning is: let it not by any means lead you into crime, or sin, أَجْرَمْتُهُ being like آثَمْتُهُ, I led him into sin, etc.
1.2.2
Fr says that the claim that جَرَمْتُ means حَقَقْتُ [or rather حُقِقْتُ, which is evidently, I think, the right reading, though I find حَقَقْتُ in the TA and in one copy of the S, in another copy of which I find جَرَمَتْ and حَقَّقَتْ, suggesting that the right reading may perhaps be جَرَمَتْ and حُقَّتْ] is worthless.
Those who explain it so were confused in their judgment by the saying of the poet Aboo-Asmà — or, as some say, El-Howfazán, or, according to others, 'Ateeyeh Ibn-'Ofeyf:
In it they made فزارة nominative, as though the meaning were حُقَّ لَهَا الغَضَبُ [it was right, or fit, or proper, for it, (the tribe of Fezárah,) to be angry; nearly agreeing with an explanation of جَرَمَ given by Golius on the authority of Ibn-Maaroof, namely, “meritus, dignus fuit”].
But, he says, فزارة is in the accusative case, the meaning being جَرَمَتْهُمُ الطَّعْنَةُ أَنْ يَغْضَبُوا [explained, on the authority of IB, in what follows].
AO says the meaning is أَحَقَّتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الغَضَبَ, that is, أَحَقَّتِ الطَّعْنَةُ فَزَارَةَ أَنْ يَغْضَبُوا, and also حَقَّت, [both having the same meaning, that is, the thrust required Fezárah to be angry,] from لَا جَرَمَ لَأَفْعَلَنَّ كَذَا meaning حَقًّا [I will certainly do this].
According to Fr, the meaning is كَسَبَتْ فَزَارَةَ الغَضَبَ عَلَيْكَ, the right reading being وَلَقَدْ طَعَنْتَ, with fatḥa on the ت [so that the verse means: And you thrust Aboo-'Oyeyneh with a thrust of your spear that caused Fezárah, after it, to be angry with you]. For he is addressing Kurz El-'Okeylee, mourning his death; and Kurz had thrust Aboo-'Oyeyneh, who was Hisn Ibn-Hudheyfeh Ibn-Bedr El-Fezáree.
1.2.3he committed a sin, a crime, a fault, or an act of disobedience—
. Synonymous with أَذْنَبَ and اِكْتَسَبَ الإِثْمَ [perhaps because one who does so brings the consequence on himself; as though originally جَرَمَ نَفْسَهُ اولِنَفْسِهِ أَثَرَ جُرْمٍ, he drew upon himself the effect of a sin, etc.; compare كَسَبَ and اِكْتَسَبَ]. Also اجرم, maṣdars إِجْرَامٌ, اجترم and تجرّم.
he committed against them a crime, or an offence deserving punishment—جَرَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ جَرِيمَةً
Also إِلَيْهِمْ, and بِهِمْ, used by a poet for عليهم or اليهم; and اجزم.
he committed the sin, or crime—اجرم الذَّنْبَ
Here the verb is made transitive.
And a poet says:
[And you see the intelligent envied, or much envied: he has not injured the honour of men, while his honour is reviled].
1.3he (a man) took to eating the جُرَامَة of the palm-trees—جَرِمَ
[That is, the dates which had fallen in the cutting, and] which were among the branches.
. In the CK, wrongly,
1.4his sin, or crime, was, or became, great—جَرِمَ
Said of a man; explained by عَظُمَ جُرْمُهُ. Also جَرُمَ, like كَرُم.
[Both are explained thus, in different places in this article, by the author of the TA; and in the latter case the explanation is followed by اى اذنب, that is, he committed a sin, etc., probably added by him to show that the reading he found was جُرْمُهُ, not جِرْمُهُ. But I think the right reading is عَظُمَ جِرْمُهُ, his body became great; and this is confirmed by what follows:]
اجرم, explained in the copies of the K by عَظُمَ [in the TK عظم يعنى جرمه وجسده], should be جَرِمَ, a triliteral; and the meaning is عَظُمَ جُرْمُهُ. In the same way the three meanings that follow, assigned in the K to اجرم, belong to جَرِمَ.
1.5
It (his colour) was, or became, clear.
1.5.1
He (a man) was, or became, clear in his voice.
1.6it (blood) stuck to him, or to it—جَرِمَ بِهِ
The same is said of tar sticking to a camel. (The same marginal note.)

5:2
O ye who believe! Violate not the sanctity of the symbols of Allah, nor of the sacred month, nor of the animals brought for sacrifice, nor the garlands that mark out such animals, nor the people resorting to the sacred house, seeking of the bounty and good pleasure of their Lord. But when ye are clear of the sacred precincts and of pilgrim garb, ye may hunt and let not the hatred of some people in (once) shutting you out of the Sacred Mosque lead you to transgression (and hostility on your part). Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancour: fear Allah: for Allah is strict in punishment.
5:8
O ye who believe! stand out firmly for Allah, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear Allah. For Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do.
11:89
And O my people! let not my dissent (from you) cause you to sin, lest ye suffer a fate similar to that of the people of Noah or of Hud or of Salih, nor are the people of Lut far off from you!
