[ جرّعهُ المَآءَ He made him to swallow the water.] تَجْرِيعٌ is The pouring beverage into the throat against one's will: but sometimes it is used of that which is not against one's will. (Har p. 115.) And جرّعهُ signifies He gave him to drink gulp after gulp, or sup after sup, or sip after sip. (Har p. 350.) A gulp, or as much as is swallowed at once, of water; a جُرْعَة of water being like a لُقْمَة of food. Or a sup, or sip; or as much as is supped, or sipped, at once; or a mouthful of what is supped (synonym حُسْوَةٌ) of water.

Also جَرْعَةٌ and جِرْعَةٌ. Or جُرْعَةٌ and جَرْعَةٌ are nouns [signifying the act of swallowing water] from جَرِعَ المَآءَ, “he swallowed the water.”

Or جَرْعَةٌ means a single act of swallowing water, and جُرْعَةٌ what one swallows; or a mouthful which one swallows; or a small draught. Its plural is جُرَعٌ.

The diminutive is جُرَيْعَةٌ.

Hence this proverb, in which the verb is intransitive and جريعة is in the accusative as a ḥāl, as though the speaker said أَفْلَتَ قَاذِفًا جُرَيْعَةَ الذَّقَنِ or بِجُرَيْعَةِ الذَّقَنِ or بِجُرَيْعَآئِهَا.

he made me escape, or he escaped from me—أَفْلَتَنِى جُرَيْعَةَ الذَّقَنِ

The meaning: such a one escaped [from destruction] when his spirit, or the remains of it, had come to be in his mouth, or near to it, as a sup [or little sup] of water is to the chin [of a person drinking]; or when death was as near to him as a little sup of water to the chin; or when he was at his last gasp. Said of one who has been at the point of destruction and then escaped.

Or the words related by Abu Zeyd may mean: he made me, that is, the remains of my soul, escape; the last two words standing in place of the pronoun attached to the verb.

Abu Zeyd gives it in this form. In the second case افلتنى stands for أَفْلَتَ مِنِّى, and [it is said that] جريعة is prefixed to الذقن because the motion of the chin shows that the soul is about to depart.

he outwent me, [or escaped me,] and I swallowed my spittle in rage against him—أَفْلَتَنَىِ جُرَيْعَةَ الرِّيقِ

Also جَرْعَةٌ and جَرْعَآءُ and أَجْرَعُ: an even piece, or a round piece, or a hill or hillock, of sand that produces no plants or herbage; and, as some add, that retains no water.

Or a piece, or tract, of sand good for producing plants or herbage, in which there is no softness or looseness.

Or land in which there is ruggedness, resembling sand.

Or a hill of which one side consists of sand and one side of stones.

Or what is termed جرعاء; and اجرع is larger than what is termed جرعاء جَرَعَةٌ.

It is also explained as sand of which the middle is elevated and the sides are thin.

IAth: اجرع means a wide place in which there is ruggedness; or a plain, or soft, place intermixed with sand.

جَرَعَةٌ is the singular, or ism waḥda, of جَرَعٌ; or, according to some, this last word is a singular, like اجرع, and its plural [of paucity] is أَجْرَاعٌ and [of multitude] جِرَاعٌ.
