Core sense — locusts; the locustgenerated

1figurative · مجاز — inferredthe egg of the locustاِبْنُ الجَرَادِ

A collective generic noun: locusts; the locust; a well-known kind of insect. So called from stripping the ground, i.e. eating what is on it.

The ism waḥda is formed with جراد, and is applied alike to the male and the female.

جرادة is not the masculine of بَقَرٌ, but is a collective generic noun; the two words being like بَقَرٌ and بَقَرَةٌ, تَمْرٌ and تَمْرَةٌ, حَمَامٌ and حَمَامَةٌ, and the like. The masculine must therefore be of the same form as the feminine, so that it is not confounded with the collective form.

But some say that جراد is the masculine and جرادة the feminine, and they cite the saying رَأَيَتُ جَرَادًا عَلَى جَرَادَةٍ [meaning I saw a male locust upon a female locust], like رَأَيْتُ نَعَامًا عَلَى نَعَامَةٍ.

According to A ʿObeyd it is called first سِرْوَةٌ, then دَبًى, then غَوْغَآءُ, then خَيْفَانٌ, then كُِتْفَانٌ, and then جراد.

As says that when the males turn yellow and the females turn black, they have no name but جراد.

[or rather the collective form]: (S:) but some say that جراد is the masc.; and جرادة , the fem.; and the saying رَأَيَتُ جَرَادًا عَلَى جَرَادَةٍ [as meaning I saw a male locust upon a female locust], like رَأَيْتُ نَعَامًا عَلَى نَعَامَةٍ , is cited: (TA:) it is first called سِرْوَةٌ ; then, دَبًى ; then, غَوْغَآءُ ; then, خَيْفَانٌ ; then, كُِتْفَانٌ ; and then, جراد : (A 'Obeyd, TA:) As says that when the males become yellow and the females become black, they cease to have any name but جراد .
