Core sense — a beast a year before maturity; a youth; time, or fortunegenerated
1
A beast one year before the ثَنِىّ [q. v.]; the age when it may for the first time be ridden and used.
Feminine with ة.
Plural masculine (of paucity) أجْذَاعٌ (Yoo), and (of multitude) جُذْعَانٌ (Yoo), جِذْعَانٌ, جِذَاعٌ, and جُذَاعٌ (Yoo); plural feminine جَذَعَاتٌ.
It is a name applied to the beast at a particular time; it does not denote a tooth growing or falling out. But its application differs with different kinds of beasts.
Of a sheep or goat: a year old, in his second year. Of a sheep: a year old, and sometimes less than a year, when food is plentiful; or eight months old, or nine; or, when from young parents, from six months old to seven, and when from very old parents, from eight months old to ten. The sheep so called is a satisfactory victim for sacrifice.
Of a goat: a year old, or in its second year; but the goat so called is not a satisfactory victim for sacrifice.
Of a bull: in the same way, in his second year, or in his third year; and the bull so called is not a satisfactory victim for sacrifice.
Of a horse: in his third year, or in his fourth year. [But see قَارِحٌ.]
Of a camel: in his fifth year; feminine with ة. This is what must be given for the poor-rate when the camels are more than sixty.
