This holds whether what the opponent says is wrong in itself or not.

Maṣdar مجادلة and جدال, as above. This is the original meaning; according to a later usage of the lawyers, he compared evidences in a discussion with others so that it might appear which of them was preponderant. Doing this is commendable if the object is to find out the truth, but otherwise it is blameable.

Er-Rāghib: competing in disputation or contention, and striving to overcome—جدال

From جَدَلْتُ الحَبْلَ, meaning "I twisted the rope firmly", as though each of the two parties twisted the other away from his opinion.

Or, as some say, it originally means wrestling, and throwing another down upon the جَدَالَة, that is, the ground.

Ibn-El-Kemál: a disputing that has for its object the showing and establishing of tenets or opinions. [See also جَدِلَ.]
