Also فِيهِ and ثَوَى المَكَانَ; maṣdar ثَوَآءُ, ثُوِىٌّ, مَثْوًى, and اثوى.

Constructed as بالمكان or فيه.

Or: he stayed there long; or he alighted, or alighted and stayed, in the place. Or ثَوَى also means he alighted and stayed, or he settled, بالمكان, in the place.

[We certainly prolong the stay in the seat of war]إِنَّا نُطِيلُ الثُّوِىَّ فِى دّارِ الحَرْبِ
he went to the woman to remain, stay, or dwell with herثَوَي إِلَى المَرْأَةِ

(M.) Hence, إِنَّا نُطِيلُ الثُّوِىَّ فِى دّارِ الحَرْبِ [Verily we prolong the stay in the seat of war]. (Mgh.) [You say also, ثَوَي إِلَى المَرْأَةِ He betook himself to the woman to remain, stay, dwell, or abide, with her: see ثَوِيَّةٌ .] [Hence,] ثَوَى , (T, M, IB, TA,) aor. ثَوِىَ ; in the K, incorrectly, ثوّى , inf. n. تَثْوِيَةٌ ; (TA;) signifies also He was slain, (T, M,) and remained where he was: (M:) or he remained in his grave: (IB, TA:) or, as the latter verb is explained in the K, he died. The lodging-place, or nightly resting-place, of camels, and of sheep or goats, when they have gone away to a distance in the pasture, or around the tents or houses; also ثَوِيَّةٌ and ثَاوَةٌ.

Or the first and second, and the third as well, mean the lodging-place, or nightly resting-place, of sheep or goats, and of oxen; and the last seems to be formed by permutation from the first.

Also, according to IAar, a combination of two or three trees over which a piece of cloth is thrown, used for shade, or shelter from the sun.

ثَأْيَةٌ is explained in the same way in the T, in art. ثأى.

The common people wrongly pronounce it تِوِىٌّ. [See also مَثْوًى.]

Remaining, staying, or dwelling; تَوِىٌّ has the same meaning, but this word is better known in this sense.

1.2

One who stays (مُجَاوِرٌ, generally meaning for the purpose of study) in either of the two sacred cities or territories [of Mekkeh and El-Medeeneh].

One who is very patient in military and raiding expeditions, who is kept in the territory of the enemy, or on the frontier of the enemies' country.
