1.1a third was taken of the property left at deathثُلِثَتِ التَّرِكَةُ

He took the third of the goods, or property, of the people, or company of men..

but in this case it seems that it should be ثَلُثَ, as above.

1.1.1he was, or became, the third of the people, or a third to the two men; or he made them, with himself, threeثَلَثَ القَوْمَ

AbdAllah Ibn-Ez-Zubeyr El-Asadee says, satirizing the tribe of Teiyi: [And if you make up the number of three, we will make up the number of four; and if there be a fifth of you, there shall be a sixth of us; so that slaughter shall destroy you]

shāhid
فَإِنْ تَثْلِثُوا نَرْبَعْ وَإِنْ يَكُ خَامِسٌيَكُنْ سَادِسٌ حَتَّى يُبِيرَكُمُ القَتْلُ

He means: if you become three, we will become four; or, if you slay three.

Also الاِثْنَيْنِ and الرَّجُلَيْنِ., thus distinguished from the verb in the first sense above.

The other verbs of number are used in the same way, up to ten, except that you say أَرْبَعُهُمْ and أَسْبَعُهُمْ and أَتْسَعُهُمْ with fet-h, because of the ع.

1.1.2he made the people, with himself, thirtyثَلَثَ القَوْمَ

1.1.5said of a horse: he came third in the raceثَلَثَ

It is said of a man in the same way, meaning he came third.

Seemingly intransitive, an object apparently being understood. Or ثلّث, though the first is apparently the right reading, unless both are correct.

That is, next after the one that is called المُصَلِّى; in the CK, الذى after الفَرَسُ should be omitted.

Then you say رَبَعَ, then خَمَسَ.

1.1.6said of an old man: he cannot rise when he wants to, not a first time, nor a second, nor a thirdلَا يَثْنِى وَلَا يَثْلِثُ

So in a copy of the M in art. ثنى, but in the present article in the same copy written لا يثنِى ولا يثْلِثُ.

Or لَا يُثَنِّى وَلَا يُثَلِّثُ, so in a copy of the A; in the CK in art. ثنى, and in Freytag's Arab. Prov. 2. 545, لَا يُثَنَّى وَلَا يُثَلَّثُ.

Or لَا يُثْنِى وَلَا يُثْلِثُ, so in a copy of the K in art. ثنى; in the TA, in the present article and in art. ثنى, without any vowel signs.

Core sense — the third young one of a she-camel; a three-day watering; the tertian fevergenerated

1

The third young one, or offspring, of a she-camel, and, according to Th, of any female.

Others are named in the same way, up to ten. But one should not say نَاقَةٌ ثِلْثٌ, on the pattern of ثِنْىٌ.

1.1he watered his palm-trees once in three daysسَقَى نَخْلَهُ الثِّلْثَ

Or he watered them بَعْدَ الثُّنْيَا, which apparently means after leaving out one day.

ثِلْثٌ is not used in this way except in this case: there is no ثِلْث in the watering of camels. The shortest period of watering is the رِفْه, when the camels drink every day; then the غِبّ, which is when they come to the water one day and not the next; then the رِبْع; then the خِمْس; and so on to the عِشْر. So says As.

This is correct, though F says that J's assertion that ثِلْث is not used except in this case requires consideration.

Core sense — three and three, three at a time; a camel's girthgenerated

1three and three; three and three together; or three at a time and three at a timeمَثْلَثُ

Or they are imperfectly declinable because they deviate from their original both in letter and in meaning: the word being changed as stated above, and the meaning changed to ثَلَاثَةٌ ثَلَاثَةٌ.

But the diminutive is ثُلَيِّثٌ, perfectly declinable, like أُحَيِّدٌ and the like, because it is like حُمَيِّرٌ, the diminutive of حِمَارٌ, taking the form of what is perfectly declinable — though this is not so with أَحْسَنُ and the like, since these words, in taking the diminutive form, do not deviate from the measure of a verb, for مَا أُحَيْسِنَهُ [How goodly he is!] is sometimes said.

Imperfectly declinable, because changed from the original form of ثَلَاثَةٌ ثَلَاثَةٌ, or because they have the quality of adjectives and deviate from the original form of ثَلَاثَةٌ. They are adjectives, for you say:

I passed by a party of men two and two, and three and three, togetherمَرَرْتُ بِقَوْمٍ مَثْنَى وَثُلَاثَ
then marry such as please you, of women, two and two, and three and three, and four and fourفَٱنْكِحُوا مَا طَابَ لَكُمْ مِنَ النِّسَآءِ وَثُلَاثَ وَرُبَاعَ

Qur'ān 4:3; meaning two at a time, and so on. Here مثنى and the rest are imperfectly declinable because they deviate from the original form of اِثْنَيْنِ اِثْنَيْنِ and the rest, and from the feminine form.

One says also مَثْلَثَ مَثْلَثَ, like ثُلَاثَ ثُلَاثَ.

I did the thing twice and twice, three times and three times, and four times and four timesفَعَلْتُ الشَّىْءَ مَثْنَى وَثُلَاثَ وَرُبَاعَ
1.1figurative · مجازa camel's girth of the kind called وَضِينذُو ثُلَاثٍ

ثُلَاثٌ is apparently the feminine of ثُلَاثَةٌ, a dialectal variant of ثَلَاثَةٌ, whose feminine is ثَلَاثٌ; and hence what follows.

With damm to the initial ث.

she was, or became, lean, or lank in the bellyاِلْتَقَتْ عُرَا ذِى ثُلَاثِهَا

Literally, the loops of her girth met together; but in a copy of the A, ذى ثَلَاثِهَا. See a similar saying under بِطَانٌ.

And a poet says: [And she had become lean, or lank in the belly, so that her girth appeared]

shāhid
وَقَدْ ضَمَرَتْ حَتَّى بَدَا ذُو ثُلَاثِهَا

But some say that ذو ثلاثها here means her belly, and the two skins, namely the upper one and the one that is pared, or scraped, off after the flaying.

According to some, the phrase is حَتَّى ٱرْتَقَى ذو ثلاثها, meaning that her fetus rose to her back; the ثلاث being the سَابِيَآء and the سَلَا and the womb.

In a copy of the A written with fet-h to the initial ث, and the same with ثلاثها.

on him is a garment of the kind called كِسَآء, made of the wool of three sheepعَلَيْهِ ذُو ثَلَاثٍ

So I find it written, but perhaps it should be ذو ثُلَاثٍ.

In the TA without any vowel sign to show that ثلاث here differs from the form in the examples cited before.

(A. [See a similar saying voce بِطَانٌ .]) And a poet says, 1 [And she had become lean, or lank in the belly, so that her girth appeared]: but some say that ذو ثلاثها [here] means her belly, and the two skins, [namely,] the upper, and that which is pared, or scraped off, after the flaying: (TA:) or, accord. to some, the phrase is حَتَّى ٱرْتَقَى ذو ثلاثها , meaning, so that her fœtus rose to her back; the ثلاث [here again in a copy of the A written with fet-h to the initial ث , and in like manner ثلاثها ,] being the سَابِيَآء and the سَلَا and the womb. (A, TA.) You say also عَلَيْهِ ذُو ثَلَاثٍ , [so I find it written, but perhaps it should be ذو ثُلَاثٍ ,] meaning, Upon him is a [garment of the kind called] كِسَآء made of the wool of three sheep. (A, TA. [In the latter without any syll. sign to show that ثلاث here differs from the form in the exs. cited before.]) وَقَدْ ضَمَرَتْ حَتَّى بَدَا ذُو ثُلَاثِهَا

1three menثُلَاثَةُ رِجَالٍ

Also written ثَلٰثَةٌ. A noun of number, that is, three; masculine, and also written and pronounced ثُلَاثَةٌ, with damm.

The feminine is ثَلَاثٌ, also written ثَلٰثٌ, and apparently ثُلَاثٌ as well, mentioned above under ثُلَاثُ, but only as occurring with ذُو prefixed to it.

three womenثَلَاثُ نِسْوَةٍ

In this saying of Mohammad, ثلاث stands for ثَلَاثِ أَنْفُسٍ. See art. رفع.

there are three qualities: in whomever they are, God will reckon with him with an easy reckoningثَلَاثٌ مَنْ كُنَّ فِيهِ حَاسَبَهُ ٱللّٰهُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا

In the same way, ثَلَاثٌ occurs in several traditions for ثَلَاثُ خِصَالٍ, as in the saying:

the three of them came to meأَتَوْنِى ثَلَاثَتَهُمْ

These are: your giving to one who denies you, forgiving one who wrongs you, and being kind to one who cuts you off from him. (El-Jámi' es-Sagheer)

The people of El-Ḥijáz say this, and أَرْبَعَتَهُمْ, and so on up to ten, with naṣb in every case; and in the same way in the feminine, أَتَيْنَنِى ثَلَاثَهُنَّ and أَرْبَعَهُنَّ. Others decline the word with the three vowels, making it like كُلُّهُمْ.

After ten, however, only naṣb is used, so that you say أَتَوْنِى أَحَدَ عَشَرَهُمْ and ثَلَاثَةَ عَشَرَهُمْ, and إِحْدَى عَشْرَتَهُنَّ and ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَتَهُنَّ.

the offspring of adultery, or fornication, is the worst of the threeوَلَدُ الزِّنَا شَرٌ الثَّلَاثَةِ

That is, if he does the deeds of his parents.

It is said that when ثلاثة means the things numbered, not the amount of the number, it is imperfectly declinable, being regarded as a proper name; and so are other nouns of number. See ثُمَانِيةٌ. See also سِتَّةٌ.

1.1thirteenثَلَاثَةَ عَشَرَ

Indeclinable in every case. Some of the Arabs pronounce it ثَلَاثَةَ عْشَرَ.

The feminine ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ, thus in the dialect of El-Ḥijáz and of most of the Arabs, is pronounced ثَلَاثَ عَشِرَةَ in the dialect of Nejd. S in art. عشر.

It has this form for the sake of distinction; properly it should be الثَّالِثُ. Or it has a meddeh in the place of the ة in the noun of number ثَلَاثَةٌ, to distinguish it from that. It is without tenween in every case, when indeterminate as well as when determinate, being feminine.

The plural is ثَلَاثَاوَاتٌ and أَثَالِثُ. It has no diminutive. Sb; S in art. امس.

Core sense — third; the third of threegenerated

1he, or it, is the third of threeهُوَ ثَالِثُ ثَلَاثَةٍ

Third; feminine with ة. The final ث in الثَّالِثُ is sometimes changed into ى.

You say this when the two terms agree, each with the other; but you do not say ثَالِثٌ ثَلَاثَةً, ثالث being regarded in the first case as though it were a substantive, for you do not mean to convey a verbal meaning by it, but only that he, or it, is one of the three, or a portion of the three.

she is the third of threeهِىَ ثَالِثَةُ ثَلَاثَ

But when there is a male among the females, you say هِىَ ثَالِثَةُ ثَلَاثَةٍ, making the masculine predominate over the feminine.

When the two terms are different, you may either make the first govern the genitive or make it govern as a verb, saying هُوَ رَابِعُ ثَلَاثَةٍ or هُوَ رَابِعٌ ثَلَاثَةً, just as you say ضَارِبُ زَيْدٍ and ضَارِبٌ زَيْدًا.

this makes two to be three, with himself, or itselfهٰذَا ثَالِثُ ٱثْنَيْنِ

And so also هٰذَا ثَالِثٌ ٱثْنَيْنِ.

ISk, T, S. In most copies of the S, ثَالِثَ ٱثْنَيْنِ is put for ثَالِثٌ ٱثْنَيْنِ, and, in the explanation of this phrase, ثَلَّثَ ٱثْنَيْنِ for ثَلَثَ ٱثْنَيْنِ; IB has remarked that these are mistakes.

ثِلَاث occurs in the sense of ثَالِث in a tradition cited under ثَانٍ in art. ثنى. Sh; T in art. ثنى.

1.1a projecting part of a mountain, beside which two pieces of rock are placed, the cooking-pot resting on all threeثَالِثَةُ الأَثَافِى

Hence the saying رَمَاهُ ٱللّٰهُ بِثَالِثَةِ الأَثَافِى, explained in art. اثف.

1.2he, or it, is a thirteenthهُوَ ثَالِثُ عَشَرَ

ثَالِثَ عَشَرَ and ثَالِثَةَ عَشْرَةَ, the first masculine and the second feminine, meaning thirteenth, are generally held to be indeclinable in every case without the article; but with the article most say in the nominative الثَّالِثُ عَشَرَ, accusative الثَّالِثَ عَشَرَ, and genitive الثَّالِثِ عَشَرَ, and in the same way in the feminine.

According to some, you say this as well as هُوَ ثَالِثَ عَشَرَ.

One who uses the first phrase says that he means هُوَ ثَالِثُ ثَلَاثَةَ عَشَرَ, that is, he, or it, is one of thirteen, and that he suppresses ثلاثه and leaves ثالث declined as it was; one who uses the second says that he likewise means this, but that, suppressing ثلاثة, he gives its final vowel to the word ثالث to show that there is a suppression.

this is the thirteenthهٰذَا الثَّالِثَ عَشَرَ

But IB says that the first of these two phrases is wrong: the Koofees allow it, but the Basrees disallow it and pronounce it a mistake.

According to J, one also says هٰذِهِ الثَّالِثَةَ عَشْرَةَ, meaning this thirteenth.

And you say هذَا الحَادِى عَشَرَ and الثَّانِىَ عَشَرَ, and so on up to twenty, all with fet-h, for the reason mentioned; and in the same way in the feminine, in which each of the two nouns is with ة.
