maṣdar ثِقَلٌ, ثِقْلٌ (a contraction of the former), and ثَقَالَةٌ — in the CK ثِقالَة, but it is like كَرَامَةٌ.

Qurʾān 7:186, said of the time of the resurrection: heavy to the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, to the angels and men and jinn. This seems to allude to the wisdom shown in concealing it; or it means that the knowledge of it [is difficult]. Ibn-ʿArafeh: or it is hidden.

[ثَقُلَ is also said of a word and of a sound, meaning it was heavy, or not easy, to utter, or heavy to the ear: see form 2. And of an affair or action, meaning it was afflictive, grievous, troublesome, or difficult.]

He (a man) was, or became, heavy in sickness, or disease; and in the same way, in his sleep.

The verb is thus, with ḍamma on the ق, though the K gives it as ثَقِلَ, like فَرِحَ, meaning his disease became violent (Fetḥ el-Bārī) — quite possibly by mistake or oversight.

Then those whose balance (of good deeds) is heavy,- they will attain salvation:

تثقيل is the opposite of تَخْفِيفٌ and means the making heavy in weight; so also ثَقْلٌ, maṣdar of ثَقَلَهُ.

هُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَٰحِدَةٍ وَجَعَلَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا لِيَسْكُنَ إِلَيْهَا ۖ فَلَمَّا تَغَشَّىٰهَا حَمَلَتْ حَمْلًا خَفِيفًا فَمَرَّتْ بِهٖ ۖ فَلَمَّآ أَثْقَلَت دَّعَوَا ٱللَّهَ رَبَّهُمَا لَئِنْ ءَاتَيْتَنَا صَـٰلِحًا لَّنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ

It is He Who created you from a single person, and made his mate of like nature, in order that he might dwell with her (in love). When they are united, she bears a light burden and carries it about (unnoticed). When she grows heavy, they both pray to Allah their Lord, (saying): "If Thou givest us a goodly child, we vow we shall (ever) be grateful."

A thing, or things, that a man has with him, of the kind that burden him; and particularly household goods, or furniture and utensils; and, according to El-Fārābī, the household and kindred and party, or domestics or servants, of a man or of a traveller; or a man's travelling gear, baggage and train.

Plural أَثْقَالٌ, with which ثَقِلَةٌ is synonymous, as are ثَقَلَةٌ, ثِقْلَةٌ, ثَقْلَةٌ and ثِقَلَةٌ, meaning all the household goods, furniture and utensils of people going on a journey.

1.2figurative · مجاز

The requisites and apparatus, instruments, tools, or the like, of a man: for instance, the books and writing-reeds of a learned man. Every craftsman has what is so called.

Iyās Eṭ-Ṭāʾī says:

shāhid
كِلَا ثَقَلَيْنَا طَامِعٌ بِغَنِيمَةٍ

— by which he means: each of our two armies, the possessors of the ثَقَلَانِ [or apparatus, or weapons, of war, is longing for spoil].

Or an army may be called ثَقَلٌ because it is heavy in assault.

1.3I am leaving among you the two objects of high esteem and care: the Book of God, and my near kindred—إِنِّى تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ كِتَابَ ٱللّٰهِ وَعِتْرَتِى

Or they are so called because of the heaviness of acting as they require; or as being likened to the requisites and apparatus, instruments or tools of a man.

Anything held in high esteem, in much request, and preserved with care. Hence this tradition.

Also eggs of the ostrich; because whoever takes them rejoices in them, and they are food.

1.5mankind and the jinn—الثَّقَلَانِ

So called because the discrimination they possess makes them excel other living beings. It may also mean the Arabs and the foreigners, or mankind and other living beings.

By the saying 1 the author thereof, Iyás Et-Tá-ee, means Each of our two armies, the possessors of the ثَقَلَانِ [or apparatus, or weapons, &c., of war, is longing for spoil]: or an army may be termed ثَقَلٌ because it is heavy in assault. (Ham ubi suprà.) كِلَا ثَقَلَيْنَا طَامِعٌ بِغَنِيمَةٍ Anything held in high estimation, in much request, and preserved with care. (K, TA.) Hence the trad., إِنِّى تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ كِتَابَ ٱللّٰهِ وَعِتْرَتِى [Verily I am leaving among you the two objects of high estimation and of care, the Book of God, and my kindred, or near kindred]: (K:) or they are thus called because of the heaviness of acting in the manner required by them: (Th, TA:) or as being likened to the requisites and apparatus, instruments, tools, or the like, of a man. يَـٰبُنَىَّ إِنَّهَآ إِن تَكُ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍ فَتَكُن فِى صَخْرَةٍ أَوْ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ أَوْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يَأْتِ بِهَا ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَطِيفٌ خَبِيرٌ

"O my son!" (said Luqman), "If there be (but) the weight of a mustard-seed and it were (hidden) in a rock, or (anywhere) in the heavens or on earth, Allah will bring it forth: for Allah understands the finest mysteries, (and) is well-acquainted (with them).

99:7
فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهٗ

Then shall anyone who has done an atom's weight of good, see it!

99:8
