. He prostrated him, or threw him down; as some say, upon the تَلّ; or he threw him down upon his تَلِيل, that is, upon his neck and his cheek — but the former is the more approved.

This is how the phrase in the Qur'ān 37:103 is explained. Aboo-Is-hák: upon his side, so that the side of his forehead fell to the ground; Katádeh: upon his mouth; or upon his face.

Nounتَلٌّ2 senses

Core sense — a natural hill; a heap of sand; a pillowgenerated

Accord. to Lth, and by general present usage: a mound, or hill, of dust, earth, or rubbish pressed together, not natural. But this is a mistake if meant as the proper application, for with the Arabs the word means a natural hill.

En-Nadr says that it is of the smaller sort of إِكَام (plural of أَكَمَةٌ): it is the height of a house or tent, and the breadth of its back is about ten cubits; it is smaller than the أَكَمَة, has fewer stones, gives growth to nothing good, and its stones are compacted together exactly like those of the أَكَمَة.

The تَلّ of dust, or earth — the artificial mound mentioned above — is well known.

Also a heap of sand. In both of these senses it comes from التَّلُّ, meaning the throwing of anything bodily upon the ground.

Also a hill overtopping what lies next to it.

Plural (of paucity) أَتْلَالٌ and أَتُلٌّ; (of multitude) تِلَالٌ and تُلُولٌ.

Also a pillow: plural أَتْلَالٌ, which is irregular; or the plural means certain sorts of cloths, or of garments; or, as some say, of pillows.

Abu-s-Semeyda' says that تِلَّةٌ, بِلَّةٌ, تَلَلٌ and تَلَّةٌ are all one word, meaning moisture.

That is, البَلَّةُ; said, it seems, to someone suspected of having drunk wine or the like.
